Israel building prison for Lebanese captives, attests to Israeli plans for large-scale ground incursion

GAMLA: News and Views from Israel / YNET

IDF has started building detention compound to be used for holding Hizbullah members that will be captured during fighting in north. Officials: Project attests to government's plans for large-scale ground incursion in Lebanon Sharon Roffe-Ofir

Preparing for an extended ground operation: The IDF has started constructing a temporary detention center designed to hold the Lebanese prisoners that will be captured during army operations in Southern Lebanon, Ynet has learned recently.

A truck convoy carrying barbed-wire fences, containers, and mobile showers and toilets started unloading equipment at the Filon military base near Rosh Pina Friday, and construction works at the place are already underway. According to plans, the structure should be able to hold up to hundreds of Hizbullah prisoners at any given time.

The fact that the army was granted special permission from the Chief Military Rabbinate to continue with construction works throughout Saturday attests to the urgency attributed to the project.

Army sources told Ynet that the decision to build the detention center followed an earlier decision taken this week to call up reserve brigades and launch preparations for a ground offensive deep inside Lebanese territory in the near future.

'Decision to build prison attests to Israel's plans'

According to the officials, the initial plan was to erect the compound near the Koach Junction using an old structure which dates back to the days of the British Mandate and which is currently in use by the Border Guard police. However, as the place is limited in size, the army later decided to locate the new prison at the larger Filon base.

The detention center will be based on the model of previous prisons built in Israel such as Ktziot in the south and the Ofer base in Jerusalem.

During the Lebanon War, thousands of Lebanese detainees were incarcerated at the al-Hiyam prison located in Lebanese territory. Defense officials explained to Ynet that setting up a detention center on such a scale is proof of the Israeli government's plans for an extensive operation that may last for months.

This may take a while. Since there's no Soviet Union to step in, the Israelis can take their time and do it right. My hope is that Syria ends up being a casualty of this war, but Israel does not want to deal with them just yet. One thing at a time.

If true, I certainly hope Israel permits the captured jihadists to read the Koran, gives them the right kind of food and doesn't injure them in any way. /sarcasm

Put them there, lock 'em in and throw away the keys.
Let 'em rot.

My spidey sense says a lot is going on under the radar.
(a) why mass all those troops on the border for days losing any element of surprise?
(b) why have the Palis pulled off? http://www.ynetnews.com/articles/0,7340,L-3279758,00.html
(c) Why is the international yelping so muted?

Has the Arab world threatened to cut off aid to Palestine if they don't cease? Have they agreed to force a return of the kidnapped soldiers and a 20 mile buffer zone in Lebanon?

Think/..If you were Egypt and Saudi Arabaia and Jordan, what better way to defand Iran and Syria.

Nix with the prisoners! They have to feed/house them and then are threatened with more attacks unless they release the cut throats. Kill them all and let God sort them out.

why have the Palis pulled off?

The Palis haven't pulled off, if you read their statement carefully you will see they say that they don't think anyone of their groups will honor the cease fire. It isn't pulling off if you don't actually quit firing missles.

The guy in charge of any prison like that should be a hog farmer and, since it is probably hard to find a hog farmer in Israel, we should offer to supply a couple. Hezbuillies being thrown into such a slammer should be made to understand that they need to learn the language, i.e. "Oink oink oink oink oink oink........."

There is no element of surprise in any sort of a large operation like that. German troops had been massed on the Russian border in gigantic numbers prior to Barbarosa.

I agree, this is what alot of the problems are about already.
Martyr them all and they will be permanently over the problem
with all those individuals at least , and no one to kidnap
further Israelis for in the future .If the Israelis insist on continuing to incarcerate these guys they are propagating their own future miseries.

True--but as places like Qatar and Kuwait and the UAE move on,(and the Taliban and Saddam were overrun and Libya folded) perhaps sense has come to the region. After all they do play chess. A more intensive war will hurt everyone but the Arabs' biggest enemies and threats--Syria and Iran.
