45 turn up for Geldof gig

Live 8 hero Bob Geldof has been forced to cancel two concerts in Italy because of lack of public interest, after only 45 people turned up to see him perform in Milan, Italy's La Stampa newspaper reported on Saturday.

Geldof walked out of Milan's 12,000-capacity Arena Civica on Friday without playing, given the paltry attendance. His manager explained that a concert for less than 400 people would not be viable, the newspaper said.

The 54-year-old Irish rocker, who said he had flown in from South Africa for the gig, sought to placate angry fans afterwards by promising to give a free concert in September.

A scheduled performance in Rome on Saturday night, for which 300 tickets had been sold, was also cancelled, La Stampa said.

Geldof was the driving force behind 10 Live 8 concerts worldwide a year ago, timed to coincide with a G8 summit hosted by Britain, to raise awareness of the plight of millions of Africans living in poverty.

A decade earlier, he spearheaded the Live Aid concerts to raise funds for famine relief in Ethiopia.

He originally became famous for leading the punk rock group The Boomtown Rats in the late 1970s.

I doubt 45 freepers will bother to read this thread.

My offense was not directed towards you, Mount Athos, but towards Geldoff.

I guess some people have a hard time realizing that their time has come and gone, and they are all washed up. He could continue to uphold his values and go work in a soup kitchen, say in Appalachia. But then, that would be BIG BAD AMERICA.

Maybe if he raised funds to kill African dictators, there may be better long term results.

first major charity involvement occurred in September 1981, when he performed as a solo artist for Amnesty International's benefit show

many aid agencies pronounced they were disappointed with the outcome, which led some cynics to claim that Live 8 had been more about rehabilitating the careers of aging rock stars, including Geldof himself, than it was about the poor people of Africa

'People are dying NOW. Give us the money NOW. Give me the money now'; shortly afterwards, he said '**** the address, just give the phone, here's the number...', when trying to emphasise the point of Live Aid as a fundraising event

In mid July 2006, he infuriated many New Zealanders by critisizing New Zealand's contribution to various charities as 'pathetic'.

In February 2006, he was among the 191 nominees for the Nobel Peace Prize.

During a visit to Ethiopia, Geldof also praised President George W. Bush's proposal to fight AIDS in Africa[9]. This proposal has been criticised from aid groups, due to its heavy emphasis on Christian morality and sexual abstinence [10]. Many on the political left have charged Geldof with hypocrisy, due to his conspicuous lack of support for causes such as the UK miners' strike (1984-1985) and the anti-war movement. Some critics have also claimed that Geldof is becoming the acceptable face of euroscepticism[11]. Geldof is also an active fathers' rights spokesperson in the United Kingdom.

Wasn't it Geldof who rganized all those rock stars for the recording of the "Band Aid" charity Christmas song with the line, "Do they know it's Christmastime at all?"

Why did he wait until the concert to cancel the show? He should have known it wasn't selling well and he could have saved himself the trouble of showing up as well as for his 45 fans if he had canceled earlier.

Lyrics

1: It's Christmas time
There's no need to be afraid
At Christmas time
We let in light and we banish shade
And in our world of plenty
We can spread a smile of joy
Throw your arms around the world
At Christmas time

2: But say a prayer
Pray for the other ones
At Christmas time it's hard
But when you're having fun
There's a world outside your window
And it's a world of dread and fear
Where the only water flowing
Is the bitter sting of tears
And the Christmas bells that ring
There are the clanging chimes of doom
Well tonight thank God it's them instead of you

Feed the world
Let them know it's Christmas time
Feed the world
Do they know it's Christmas time at all?

3: And there won't be snow in Africa
This Christmas time
The greatest gift they'll get this year is life
Where nothing ever grows
No rain nor rivers flow
Do they know it's Christmas time at all?

Feed the world
Let them know it's Christmas time
Feed the world
Let them know it's Christmas time again

BRIDGE:
(Here's to you) raise a glass for everyone
(Here's to them) underneath that burning sun
Do they know it's Christmas time at all?

END: Feed the world
Let them know it's Christmas time

END: (repeat & fade)

Lyrics With Performers
(Paul Young)
It's Christmas time
There's no need to be afraid
At Christmas time
We let in light and we banish shade
(Boy George)
And in our world of plenty
We can spread a smile of joy
Throw your arms around the world
At Christmas time

(George Michael)
But say a prayer
Pray for the other ones
At Christmas time it's hard
(Simon LeBon)
But when you're having fun
There's a world outside your window
(Sting) And it's a world of dread and fear
Where the only water flowing is
(Bono joins in)
The bitter sting of tears
And the Christmas bells that are ringing
Are clanging chimes of doom
(Bono only) Well, tonight thank God it's them instead of you.

And there won't be snow in Africa this Christmas time.
The greatest gift they'll get this year is life

No rain or rivers flow
Do they know it's Christmas time at all?

The Sex Pistols were a " punk " band . The Boomtown Rats were NOT .

As I recall, when the Police were starting out, only 3 people showed up at a bar gig in upstate New York. They played, of course, and everyone had a great time.....and they got good publicity.
