Actress/singer Jada Pinkett Smith is horrified by increasing gun crime in the United States, declaring the country must look to third world countries to rediscover its values.
The Wicked Wisdom frontwoman and her actor/rapper husband Will Smith have travelled to Africa on several occasions for charity work and have been humbled by citizens' appreciation of the basic things in life - like education.
The Smiths will fund and appear at Charles 'Charlie Mack' Alston's annual Party 4 Peace in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania this weekend, which aims to raise awareness of street crime.
Pinkett Smith says: "It's pretty bad everywhere. I think we're in a worse situation now than I can think of ever. Just the amount of injustice that we're doing to one another. It's such a complicated issue.
"It's an epidemic. If you look at our homes, it's clear why. We need a new reality. The idea that we're supposed to sit back and wait for somebody to do something for us, that's not going to happen.
"I've gone to Africa where kids go to school and share one textbook, (I've met) kids that are walking three miles to school, three miles home because education is valued. What do we value? Nothing.

Many of the more civilized and wealthy parts of Africa have gun death rates FAR HIGHER than even Europe in WWI. They do this as a matter of course too, and only rarely think of it as war.
Apparently the Smiths didn't do much traveling in the African hotspots. The could have rediscovered machete violence.
Will Smith seems like a pretty decent guy.
She's really speaking about herself there.
Who cares what this *&&^&* thinks.
Honestly, if people think this is such a terrible place they should just leave.
Such comments are especially disgusting from people like Mrs. Smith, who has been blessed with success and the very freedoms that only this country guarantees.
I wonder what her home looks like.
Did I miss the part where she and her husband say they're moving their family to Africa?
I suppose it depends on how you interpret what she's saying. I think she's being introspective in a Bill Cosby sort of way.
Increasing gun crime in the US? Where the hell has she been for the last 10 years?
If she would venture into the black community and shout this long and loud, I would have more respect for her opinions.
It's always a laugh when the Hollywood types are humbled by what truly is humbling in poor countries: the strength of faith, family and community against dire odds.......all the things that the same Hollywood crowd mocks in this country.
It's actually the colorful costumes, the foreign tongues and the quaint customs that turn these people on and blinds them to their own hypocrisy.
Well.....dearie.....just look at Hollywood......what the IDIOTS emulate!
Pinkett, it's even worse. If you listened to Rush the other day, people are using CARROTS to put out the eyes of other people. There should be an international treaty signed at the UN outlawing carrots; that would solve that problem.
Then we also have Motts apple sauce; someone pounded on a robber to subdue that person; we should also have an international ban on apple sauce, another problem solved.
Let's see now, Pinkett, other problems? Like the quality of Pinkett's education?
Selling all their homes and possessions first...
She has a good point there.
I believe Johannesburg South Africa has become unlivable, with up to 20 murders daily, mostly by guns. Or is she talking of Sierra Leone, Liberia, Ivory Coast or the Congo, where she would be "humbled" by the remarkable vioence of machete-wielding gangs on the streets. Perhaps that is the "African paradise" that this yet another chronic complainer (and grotesquely overpaid Hollywood dimwit) is referring to.
Yeah, because, y'know, Johannesburg is SO DAMN SAFE these days. Give me a break. There's probably people in J'burg that would like to move to South Beirut and get bombed by the IAF because it's safer.
Yeah, guess Darfur wasn't on her itinerary.
Another former rapper (Ice cube or Ice T) made a movie about South Africa a few years back. It portrayed S.A. as a violent drug addicted society largely controlled by drug lords.
I walked about 4 miles not because I "valued" my education but because I valued not getting my behind whooped if I ever skipped out.
Understanding the rest of her philosophy would require narcotic use.
OK -- mea culpa -- Smith may seem like a nice guy but, after googling, I was way off in suspecting he might be a closet conservative.
If this overpaid bimbette likes the values of the third world cesspool, she's more than welcome to EMIGRATE there!
and good damned riddance to boot.
Yes, there ARE problems in RSA; however, Zimbabwe is far worse...so are parts of California.
No, Smith unfortunately is a leftist pinko, just like his idiotic wife.
Instructions for public speaking. First engage your brain.
I just left my house for the first time.
I think we're in a worse situation now than I can think of ever.
Your frame of reference is what? Your ignorant secluded lifestyle.
Just the amount of injustice that we're doing to one another.
What's this "we" crap sister? I don't own a Machete and I am not a third world thug. Speak for yourself.
It's amazing how many of these submorons go to Africa and they can't believe what they see. It's there and it has been this way for a long damn time. It will be that way until someone kills a lot of bad people and tribalism is a thing of the past.
Yes, we must lookm to South Africa (flaming tires aroud the neck); Ethiopa (starvation and forced slavery) and Liberia (civial war and wholesale slaughter).
Yes, she is correct. Africa is the lodestar by which we must guide our ship of state.
She's very cute. But, very stupid.
(Go Israel, Go! Slap 'Em, Down Hezbullies.)
"I've gone to Africa where kids go to school and share one textbook, (I've met) kids that are walking three miles to school, three miles home because education is valued. What do we value? Nothing
Does this mean shed like to cut education spending?
Basically every third world country is poor because of the corrupt governments that reward a very few at the expense of the many.
I have no doubt she is an ignorant liberal.
That said, there is loads of room for misinterpretation of anything she may have said here. What did she say? All I can gather her is that she said basically that people don't treat each other right, and that when you have nothing, you appreciate the really good things.
My Mom grew up in the dustbowl, and had school in a one room schoolhouse with 7 other kids. She had two dresses, period. One Christmas her father made a checkerboard for the family by slicing up a broom handle.
Nowadays she has the best priorities and values of anyone I know. She says to me, "I'm happy anywhere". And she is, God bless her.
When she speaks "I think we're in a worse situation now than I can think of ever." she is talking about persons of her skin color.
I read a book a couple of years ago, called "Out of America". It was written by the man who was the Washington Post Bureau Chief for Africa for ten or so years. He described one of the most bizarre things I've ever read about. Much of the clothing in Africa comes from US care packages. Frequently, the Africans don't know or care whether clothing is meant for boys or girls. They also get surplus toys, which sometimes include Halloween masks. He described eleven and twelve year old boys, drugged and armed with panga knives and rifles by tribal leaders, wearing evening gowns and Donald Duck masks wiping out small villages in the middle of the night.
Well "I've gone to schools where kids go to share one gumball, (I've met) kids that are walking three miles to school, uphill and three miles home uphill Because Americans pay for new shoes to wear out !
Makes about as much sense as this dingbat !
gun crimes have continued to decrease over the last 12 years. But don't let facts get in the way.
Well, for starters is appalls me that so many Americans value your and other entertainers' half-baked, brain-fevered opinions, you dips**t.
Will Smith is a lucky man.
Jada Pinkett Smith, who has two children with the 'Independence Day' star, is quoted as saying: "My mother visits a lot and I make my children go with her to Vegas so I can have the house to myself."For more wisdom from this genius, go here.
Earlier this year, the Hollywood couple, who have been married for eight years, revealed the secret to a happy marriage - asking permission before you cheat on your spouse.
'Men In Black' star Will said the couple made a pact to sleep with other people - as long as it isn't kept secret.
So she's married to Will Smith? Will Smith? Where have I seen him before? Oh thats right. Carrying a gun to kill Aliens in "Men In Black 1 and 2". Oh and the punk with the guns in "Bad Boys 1 & 2". And who was shooting the crap out of the Robots in "I Robot"? Oh the same guy with the gun in "Wild Wild West" and in "Enemy of the State", Will Smith! Before this idiot Jada Pinko Smith starts shooting her mouth off, maybe she should be more selective of the parts her husband chooses that promotes hip hop artists with guns to solve their problems.
Washed up lame actress in a failed ("open") marraige with Will Smith. A world-class moron, however.
Maybe we should adopt the traditional African family values of, Rawanda, no make that Zimbabwae, no make that Liberia, no make that Sudan, no make that Somilia....
God save us from Hollywood Airheads.
Guess she wants criminals to kill with machete's the way they do in the 3rd world.
I've read this a couple of times and I see absolutely no reason to bash this woman. In fact, I applaud her for trying to do something. There certainly IS a lot of street crime in the inner cities, and the Smiths are providing money and time to help Charles Alson fight it. Good for them.
