Charles Barkley may run in 2010
The Birmingham News ^ | Wednesday, July 26, 2006 | CHARLES J. DEAN

DESTIN, Fla. - Charles Barkley, declaring himself a Democrat, said Tuesday he is seriously considering a run for governor of Alabama, maybe as early as 2010.

The Leeds native and former Auburn University and NBA basketball star has teased for years about pursuing the state's highest office, but he told about 900 public school board members from across the Southeast that he's moving toward a decision on the matter.

"I'm serious," Barkley said. "I've got to get people to realize that the government is full of it. Republicans and Democrats want to argue over stuff that's not important, like gay marriage or the war in Iraq or illegal immigration. They push those issues because they play well on TV and because they deceive people.

For some reason I thought I heard years ago that he was a Republican.

He was. He said way back in the early 90's he wanted to run for governor of Alabama some day as a Republican. One of his best quotes was when he told his grandmother about it and she said, "Oh, you don't want to be a Republican, they're for the rich!" Barkley replied, "Grandma, I am the rich."

Guess all the anti-Bush propaganda finally drove him away, but I expect he would be a conservative Democrat and not a moonbat.

If he is now calling himself a Democrat, it must mean that he has spent all his money, and now needs to get a job.

That is not how a broke Dem thinks. When broke, they usally look for a handout.

Barkley use to hang around with Rush, and Mr.Limbaugh had indicated that Barkley was a conservative. Imagine my surprise when I saw Barkley at a North Carolina rally for the breck girl. From Rush Limbaugh to the slip-and-fall, ambulance chasing, leftist RAT and premier phony, john edwards. That's like supporting Bill Buckley on one day and licking stalins feet on another. I think this Barkley guy is strange, as bizarre politically as he was on the basketball court.

There's something about the guy I just can't help liking. Maybe the fact that he is willing to say what is on his mind. Even if I don't agree, it beats the pre-digested verbiage that comes out of most politicians' mouths.

From Wikepe, no Wikoepoe, no Wikepedi, ah hell, it's that online encyclopedia:

"During an altercation in a bar in 1997, Barkley threw 20-year-old Jorge Lugo through a plate-glass window. When interviewed by police Barkley reportedly quipped "I regret we weren't on a higher floor.""

Great stuff!

Well, if he is going to be a Democrat, I hope you're right and he isn't a moonbat. Still... illegal immigration not important? War in Iraq not important? Hmm... my hopes for him are not high right now.

I thought he was a republican. Who got to him? I remember a story about his mother asking him why he supported republicans. Didn't he know that republicans were rich people? I understood he told his mama, "Mom, I AM rich. If he runs as a RAT, I won't be voting for him, even if he is from Auburn.

More Wiki goodies:

"In 2000, Barkley wrote the foreword for Sports Illustrated columnist Rick Reilly's book "The Life of Reilly." In it Barkley quipped, "Of all the people in sports I'd like to throw through a plate glass window, Reilly's not one of them. It's a shame though, skinny white boy looks real aerodynamic."

"Although many fans believed Barkley's candor made him one of the NBA's most lovable players, his behavior occasionally backed up his claims, like in a game in the 1991-92 season where he spat on a 9-year old girl in Philadelphia"

In an interview with ESPN's Trey Wingo on May 3, 2006, Barkley revealed that he has lost approximately $10 million through gambling.
