The nearest "big" city to me is Peoria, Illlinois about 100,000 population and we have our share of libs around here too.

The nearest "big" city to me is Salisbury, Maryland......or maybe Ocean City, MD. They're both about the same distance and similar population. The population of either of those towns is WAY more than double the population fo this enitre county.

As far as I'm concerned danged near any Rep. in Congress is better than what I left when I left Delaware.......Mike (yellow stripe) Castle????? I won't even bother mentioning BInlaDEN or Crapper.

And now the mayor can do nothing.

Mayor Daley? I'm sure he's powerless.

Except that by the time the teacher is finishing their education, a doctor is just beginning their medical education.

True, but that's taken care of by supply and demand.

Teachers all the time screw up in their jobs. Look at Ward Churchill, or Berkley, or any other school. What is the worse that happens? They misinform students all the time. Sometimes the students unlearn all the stupidity and lies the teachers teach them, and they become conservatives. Meanwhile, a doctor screws up, and somebody ends up paralyzed or dead.

Disagree strongly. A doctor screws up, you lose your leg; a teacher screws up and you lose your mind. I'd rather be dead than be an ignorant, indoctrinated liberal.

Lastly, as far as value. A doctor is a necessity. Without them peoples quality of life diminishes. Teachers on the other hand for the most part can be done without. Good parents would homeschool, and would have "teachers" for very few things.

Agreed.

I put it this way once.

I can homeschool my children and give them a quality education.

I can't home doctor my children fully and expect them to grow up completely normal.

Yes, a doctor's skills are far more specialized and non-intuitive than those of a teacher. Even so, I think people stand in too much awe of doctors. I think a lot of good health is just common sense and when I do go to the doctor I view him as a guy who works for me and has specialized knowledge (like a plumber, if I couldn't do plumbing), not a god/philosopher to be obeyed at all costs and who has unique wisdom about the nature of life.

Not saying you believe any of those things, it just seems that a lot of people view them that way, and this issue is close enough it got me up on my soap box.

[You are doomed among the Walt haters on this site........according to them you can only be a WalMart executive to spout that tripe.]

...And another thing...wait...hand me that can of gasoline...

Anyone can do this investigation on their own to see who works at Wallmart. Similar to the fast food industry, the low wage Wallmart josbs are primarily occupied by high school/college students, part time "mommies", seasonal workers, older married women, retirees, disabled folks (who also often collect some subsidies). By and large, the workers at Walmart are not the bread winners for dependents. They may contribute to the household income or just like the exercise and socialite. They may be working for book, gas, beer, or the insurance. They are folks that are either just getting into the workforce, just getting out of the workforce, are bored doing nothing, like the flexible hours and additional income for the family, etc.

So, to all those Walmart Haters, take note; Walmart, like Microsoft and Big Oil, are iconic examples of successful capitalism exemplifying the proper application of the supply and demand economic curve. Their contribution to the world's unparalleled economic engine is profound. The tax revenue they inject into local and national economies can not simply be measured by their own volume.

Instead of bashing Walmart, I say we give them a tax incentive to start opening stores abroad and bringing some of that foreign money here. ;o) (Now I've just gone too far).

Sad to see you hate doctors so much and think so little of them that you think they have the same value as teachers.

You're telling us that you'd have a teacher perform open heart surgery on you?

Any doctor can teach. No teachers can doc.

It's simple how easy is it to find someone who can do the work.

It's easy to replace a teacher. Can hire someone off the street to teach most basic subjects.

Can't just get someone off the streets to perform surgery.

You can replace a teacher with a doctor in 2 seconds. You can't replace a doctor with a teacher.

Doctors are more rare.

What the hell are you talking about? I didn't say anything hateful about doctors, IMHO. I was just making the point that a bad teacher can be very devastating to one's life just like a doctor. I also likened them to plumbers, meaning that they have a technical skill that I don't have and that I sometimes need. Obviously the quantitative level of the skill is greater than that of a plumber, but the principle holds true. I possess technical skills that make some people need me like they need a plumber. Again, not a hateful statement if you think about it.

You're telling us that you'd have a teacher perform open heart surgery on you?

No, of course not.

Any doctor can teach. No teachers can doc.

To a degree that's true. However in some ways I think the teaching role is more pivotal. As evidence I give you the Marxist dreck graduating from our public schools.

I was also saying that I think people overconsult doctors and that they view them as sort of omniscient when in fact they're probably no more informed than the average guy on issues outside their technical expertise. As evidence I give you the doctors asking about guns in the home fiasco.
