Thousands flee Indonesian volcano

Jakarta, Indonesia

28 July 2006 09:50

More than 3 000 villagers have fled the area around a volcano in eastern Indonesia after it started blasting out hot gas and lava, officials said on Friday.

Saut Simatupang, a senior vulcanologist, told Reuters the alert status for Mount Karangetan on Siau island was now at maximum.

"There is a hot gas cloud as far as 2,5km from the southern or south-eastern parts of the volcano. Since it [the cloud] is near to villagers' homes we have upgraded it to the top alert status," he said.

The official said there had been no casualties, but the lava flow was only 400m away from some villagers' homes.

He said that villagers had been evacuating on their own accord at night, but were returning during the day to work.

"The latest situation tends to show a decrease, with the hot gas cloud declining."

Siau lies north of Manado on Sulawesi island, which is 2 200km north-east of the capital Jakarta.

Rustam Pakaya, a senior health ministry official in Jakarta, said there were four villages threatened by the volcano.

"There are 3 400 people evacuating. But they return to their home and work in the morning," Pakaya said. - Reuters

No, not global warming -- it's Bush's fault.

It seems that once a Nation wipes out it's Christian population with the Islamic Horde, it turns from the Vacation spot of the Earth to the Volcano and Tsunami Capitol.

Allah may be their God, but it seems that Allah is not really God.

Or of course, he hates them...

Nice, but the population of the islands where this volcano is is 95% CHRISTIAN.

Ooops. So much for that theory.

No, actually global cooling.

If this baby blasts some ash up high enough then it will give us a sunshade and break the heat wave in California.

But sulfur dioxide gas released by volcanos can sometimes reach the upper atmosphere and there reflect solar heat back from Earth and cause some global cooling.

This volcanic eruption doesn't sound big enough to do the job, however.

This volcano erupts a lot in not-that-big-eruptions.

The whole island of Siau was evacuated because of it in 1974 - it's a threat to people living on the island and not much else.

The heat wave in California has more to do with increased solar activity this year, not Boxer, etc. Scientists have found a way to predict solar output from reactions going on under the surface, and they predicted a scorcher this year.

Before that less sun spots than normal were the only clue they had to go on. Sunspots cycles are around every 9-10 year I think.

18 years ago we had a hot time here, but the worst years were around 1903.
