Thousands flee Indonesian volcano

Jakarta, Indonesia

28 July 2006 09:50

More than 3 000 villagers have fled the area around a volcano in eastern Indonesia after it started blasting out hot gas and lava, officials said on Friday.

Saut Simatupang, a senior vulcanologist, told Reuters the alert status for Mount Karangetan on Siau island was now at maximum.

"There is a hot gas cloud as far as 2,5km from the southern or south-eastern parts of the volcano. Since it [the cloud] is near to villagers' homes we have upgraded it to the top alert status," he said.

The official said there had been no casualties, but the lava flow was only 400m away from some villagers' homes.

He said that villagers had been evacuating on their own accord at night, but were returning during the day to work.

"The latest situation tends to show a decrease, with the hot gas cloud declining."

Siau lies north of Manado on Sulawesi island, which is 2 200km north-east of the capital Jakarta.

Rustam Pakaya, a senior health ministry official in Jakarta, said there were four villages threatened by the volcano.

"There are 3 400 people evacuating. But they return to their home and work in the morning," Pakaya said. - Reuters

My first awareness of the evils of islam was the utter destruction of Christian villages in Indonesia.

I also seem to recall that as long as slick willie was so very friendly with the Riady's, he was not about to comment on the atrocities.

...... and?

Do you not think there are oceanic volcanoes? If you don't care to learn, you needn't give me your needless vitriol about that guy.

I was passing along info on the oceans, not trying to please you.

I knew about oceanic volcanoes long before the clown that runs "iceagenow" did. (Incidentally, he cites as one of his sources on the issue the fake, fraudulent news site (based in New Jersey) "India Daily."

Underwater volcanoes are perfectly normal, and have been going on for 4 billion years. There has been no increase in underwater volcanic activity at all.

What there has been an increase in is the ability to find and study underwater volcanoes, and also an increased ability with the internet for clueless nitwits like the author of iceagenow to google around and collect underwater volcano reports and convince himself that underwater volcanoes suddenly started erupting when he started hearing about them.

A good example is the MASSIVE increase in reported tornadoes in the US in the last 50 years.

Do you really think the number of tornadoes has gone up? Of course not. More of them are just being reported. No weather radar 50 years ago, no storm chasers, etc.

His entire site is essentially worthless.

Amazes me the incredible passion people have for junk science on the internet and worthless nonsense from Coast-to-Coast regulars.

I'm having trouble finding info on the religious demographic of those islands (now I'm curious!) - can you link me to anything?

Plenty of stuff on the totality of Indonesia of course - 88% Muslim, over 17000 islands (hard to believe there are that many!), largest number of active volcanos in the world, frequent earthquakes etc.

However, it's not as Muslim as you think.

The thing about Islam in Indonesia is that the local population infuse a LOT of local religious beliefs into the religion, much to the extreme annoyance of the die-hard Wahhabis in Saudi Arabia. Even the westernmost part of Indonesia--where Islam has its strongest hold--the religion there has still quite a lot of differences from Wahhabism. Saudis have sent many Wahhabi missionaries to Indonesia but their success have been mixed at best.

Hey genius, and I say that with great sarcasm, it's understandable that you are amazed.

I merely posted about the ocean volcanoes to bring up the SUBJECT of them to the other poster (not to you). I did NOT post it to propose that volcanoes have necessarily increased. Get a grip and lose the haughty, irritated attitude. You make FR look bad.

I don't know that under ocean volcanoes have increased, and you with your head firmly in a self-righteous position and otherwise, do not know either.

Don't bother replying. I try not to communicate with self-righteous types with huge, arrogant, but insecure chips on their shoulders.

Pick a fight with someone else.... preferably with someone with whom you live.

Perhaps some of the Islands, but from my search the Islands are best known for the ferry that sank near there with 500 people fleeing the slaughter. The islands wildly vary in creed. I think that this area is one of the last remaining (surviving) areas with some Christians, mixed with the most radical sectarian violence of the Muslims.

The other areas are now listed as 99 to 95 percent Muslim. They are quieter, killing christians is no big deal. Perhaps they will make an indangered species licencing on the sport. But I doubt it.

look at it the other way, if it pushes enough ash into the air you get the opposite, it blocks out the sun.
