Woman in doghouse over Jehovah's Witness sign
Yahoo News ^ | 07/28/2006

Posted on 07/28/2006 12:58:54 PM PDT by Responsibility2nd

LONDON (Reuters) - A British woman has been ordered by police to take down a sign on her garden gate which read "Our dogs are fed on Jehovah's Witnesses."

Janet Grove, who owns a terrier puppy called Rabbit, insisted the sign was a gentle joke to discourage callers at her front door.

Her late husband put the sign up more than 30 years ago when members of the church called at their house on Christmas Day.

But police were forced to act after receiving a complaint.

"We were informed by a member of the public who found the sign to be distressing, offensive and inappropriate," a police spokesman said. "Officers attended the address and the sign was voluntarily taken down."

Well the sign says "All Trespassers Will Be Shot On Sight"
So I jumped the fence and I yelled toward the house,
"Man, what gives you the right?
To put up a fence to keep me out
Or to keep Mother Nature in?"

Interesting. The sign worked for thirty years!

Face it, nobody has anything very good to say about Jehovah's witnesses. But let me make an observation.

In spite of the ridicule and rejection, they never give up witnessing their faith for God. That's why I'm always at least polite when they show up at the door.

Police are supposed to enforce laws, not communicate threats to sue from one citizen to another. No law could possibly have been violated here. The police are out of their legal area of activity by being involved.

We have a nice little sign on our front door. My wife got it at a craft sale years ago:
No Witnessing
No Soliciting
No Kidding

More than a few times I've pointed the sign out to witnessers or solicitors.

I don't have to say a word. They just go away.

My brother was harassed by JW for three weekends straight. He got up early on the forth and put up some police barricade tape around his front lawn, made a chalk outline of a body sprawled on the cement, put a big red tempera paint splatter at the head, and then put a few Watchtower magazines around. Then he watched from the window as they came again, looked around and left.

To JWs, Jews are worth 100 points, but they really target elderly homeowner widows, 150 points, and tend to go for volume by going after non-practicing catholics, 15 points and non-practicing protestants, 10 points. I think muzzies help them make "club" or something.

"Police are supposed to enforce laws, not communicate threats to sue from one citizen to another. No law could possibly have been violated here. The police are out of their legal area of activity by being involved."

In America, yes.
In England, no. English law and custom is quite different than in America. There is no "First Amendment" free speech in England, and never has been.
The law says that offensive things are actionable.
Somebody was offended.
They reported it to the police.
The police investigated, and asked the person to take down the sign (specifically, the sign threatens a religious group, and legally is the same thing, under English law, as a sign that says "My dog bites Jews", or "We feed our dog Muslims".) It is illegal to say those offensive things abour religion in England, and it's the police's duty to enforce the law.

The common language is deceptive: England ain't America. It's not even close.
God Save The Queen!

A mezuzah cover is just a cover with the Shema, et al, so yes, there is a kosher scroll in it.

They were pretty savvy in NYC real estate (no small thing). They bought up huge tracts of land on the Brooklyn side of the Brooklyn Bridge. Today it's probably worth in the billions.

I lived in a house years ago during college that was set back from the road quite a ways. My roomate's dog would never bark at anyone coming up to the house - deliveries, unknown friends, etc. (Worthless guard dog!)

Two times he was uncontrollable and alerted us to people coming in from the far end of the drive. The first time it was two Jehovah's Witnesses. The second time it was a couple of Mormons! He kept barking the whole time as I said hello and goodbye to them and they walked back to the street. It was really wierd.

Two rules for society to follow:

1. Do not do things that are extraordinarily offensive.

2. Do not be too easily offended.

I would say, that some overly sensitive person felt badly wounded by what could only be described as a whimsical remark on the passing scene.

Not like it was a drive-by shooting or anything.

A few years ago, there was a grease spot on the sidewalk outside the front door of a high rise office building where I had my practice. Then one day, a United Way rep showed up and asked me to set up a "voluntary" payroll deduction plan so my employees could "give" their "fair share" with less effort.

I showed the goof ball the grease, told him that was where the last slob landed after pitching a shakedown, and then asked if he wanted to try for a new record.

The rep complained to building management. I was told to be more discrete. The rest of the tenants (mainly independent oil geologists and engineers) found out about the boo-rah and got hacked at building management and the United Way.

A few days later, the building's owners scrubbed the sidewalk.

Bottom line, this PC garbage happens in Texas just like it does in the UK.

I never deny anyone the freedom of their beliefs -- as long as those beliefs are peaceful.

If memory serves, the church was a reaction to WWI and morphed out of some kind of religious printing enterprise.

We let them give us a Book of Mormon (they took a copy of the Catechism in exchange) so that we'd have a better understanding of what we needed to refute. It's a good thing they haven't come back, because we haven't actually gotten around to reading it. I just remembered, that's how the religious bookshelf came to live by the front door - we wanted to have it all handy when they stopped by.
