A 30-year-old Pakistani man, announcing he was a Muslim and angry about Israel, pulled out a gun in the Seattle Jewish Federation today and shot six people, one dead.

The gunman, identified by law enforcement sources as Naveed Afzal Haq, 30, reportedly lives in Pasco, Washington and has a charge of lewd conduct pending against him in Benton County, Washington. He reportedly is a U.S. citizen.

According to several witnesses, the Haq got through security and announced to staff members: "I'm a Muslim American; I'm angry at Israel." He immediately began shooting randomly with a semiautomatic 9-mm handgun at the 18 employees and visitors in the offices.

The Seattle Times reports the gunman shot ordered a receptionist to call 911 after he shot her.

"He told the police that it was a hostage situation and he wanted us to get our weapons out of Israel," one of the wounded workers said.

FBI spokesman David Gomez said officials believe the suspect acted alone and is not affiliated with a foreign organization.

Haq's father was a founding member of the Islamic Centre of Tri-Cities in Richland. He and his wife moved to Pasco three years ago.

According to Chris Richey of Everett, Haq had been his neighbor until two weeks ago, when he abruptly moved. The landlady at their apartment told Richey Haq was going to Pakistan. Haq spoke often about guns and politics, said Richey, and didn't like President Bush.

A law-enforcement source said Haq had a licence to carry a concealed weapon.

Attorney Larry Stephenson, who is representing Haq on a misdemeanor lewd conduct charge for allegedly exposing himself in a public place, said his client had been scheduled for trial last Thursday, but the action was postponed. Haq is not married, has no children and no job, Stephenson said.

Stephenson refused to disclose any mental-health issues his client might have. "I'm really not OK to discuss that," he said.

A hospital spokesman said five women were brought in, and three of them are in critical condition. Three are in their 20s, one is 19 and the other is 43. The 43-year-old was shot in the abdomen. One of the victims is in her 17th week of pregnancy.

A joint terrorism task force joined SWAT teams and a bomb disposal unit at the scene.

"Throughout the city, we have directed all our patrol officers to monitor closely all synagogues and other Jewish organizations, and we have also advised neighboring agencies in the Puget Sound area to do the same," said Nick Metz, Seattle Police Department.

The Jewish Federation of Greater Seattle says on its Web site that its mission is to "ensure Jewish survival and enhance the quality of Jewish life locally, in Israel and worldwide."

The FBI has labeled the shootings a "hate crime" based on what the gunman told police in a 911 call, the Seattle Post-Intelligencer reported.

After we heard about the story, we started looking and reading. My husband predicted that it wouldn't be stressed that this guy was a Muslim.

We watched Glenn Beck's show last night and it seems to me that Beck is the only one on TV calling a spade a spade.

We were amazed at one of his guests last night (I think it was a compilation of a bunch of segments from the week.)

Anyhoo, the guy kept referring to the Islamofascists and how Islam wants a war with the West.

The rest of the on air media pussyfoot around the subject, IMHO.

When Naveed Haq graduated from Richland High School in 1994, his yearbook photo revealed a big smile, friendly eyes, buttoned-down collar and smart tie. "Peace Be Unto You" were the words that appeared with his name and picture. Other students said that image and message fit the young man.

"He was a pretty calm, collected, happy guy," said Talon Wiser, a Richland man who had English classes with Haq. "I've never seen the guy get mad at anybody."

Twelve years later, Haq left a darker impression. In March of this year, he climbed up on a raised coin fountain inside Kennewick's Columbia Center mall and began "catcalling" women at the makeup counter at the nearby Macy's store, said Lisa Beaton, a Kennewick city prosecutor. When young women walked by his perch, Haq unzipped his pants and allegedly flashed his penis at them, Beaton said.

Haq, 30, was charged with lewd conduct — a gross misdemeanor — and was scheduled to stand trial in Benton County District Court on Thursday. But the trial was postponed, said Haq's attorney, Larry Stephenson, because Stephenson had to try a different case in another courtroom.

In high school, Haq struck classmates as pretty middle of the road: not outgoing but not reclusive, smart but not brilliant, small of stature and not terribly athletic. Despite his family's long-standing involvement in the Muslim faith — his father helped found Richland's Islamic Center in 1981 — Haq didn't make a show of his religion.

According to FNC, the shooter had a CCW permit. I knew he was due in court for a misdemeanor lewd conduct charge.

Why wasn't his permit revoked when he was caught exposing himself?

For that matter, why didn't Homeland Defense already have him on their radar, considering his background and the fact that he had a permit?

Why all the lies from the media, the FBI, the government? First of all, they are up against the bloggers and FR, so they don't have a chance to hide stuff, really. Second, clarity is so important when facing an enemy.

Lets see if I could start a new religion and demand tax exempt status and full protection of the 1st Amendment if in my core beliefs it were clearly stated that:

#1) Anyone not of my religion MUST be killed or enslaved.

Well our Civil War has begun. They can pretend that he is "mentally ill" in a way that is not Islam-related, they can pretend that he acted on his own and was "not affiliated with or influenced by a terrorist organization", they can pretend that it was a "personal" matter.

But the fact is that this happened, predictably, in one of the more "tolerant", i.e., weak, areas of our country, in the same sense that a leak starts in a weak area of your roof. By the time you recognize that there is a leak -- and we all know that this incident will not be recognized as such -- a lot of the structure has been damaged.

The bell curve of acceptable behavior is either flattening out or shifting. Social behavior that was simply inconceivable twenty years ago became virtually impossible, then wildly improbable, through many levels of ever-so-slightly-increasing possibility, and now this has happened. It might have been a ten-million-to-one chance that this would happen on any given day in the past five years but we all know that these probabilities are growing shorter and that Muslim-instigated hate crimes are rising.

Does anybody remember the organized destruction in Oakland, CA back in December, by the "members" of Your Black Muslim Bakery? That's another "weak" city as far as morals and crime are concerned.

We can believe that these two incidents are unrelated if we like. They are miles and months apart, one victim was a Jew and one victim was not, one attack was by a single person and one was by a group, one was in a black ghetto and one was in a white neighborhood.

But they are all cut from the same cloth, so to speak. The effects of the psychosis of Islam are becoming more manifest in the U.S. The nature of rare events is that the relationship between these two incidents doesn't "prove" that the next one will happen somewhere less than seven months from now, or be more spontaneous, or directed more randomly, but I fear that before too long we will be suffering these "unique" incidents at a rate that will make it hard for us to even keep track of the specifics of each one.
