I'd like to see it go beyond that. I think the candidates should be chosen from voting members of the state party--convention-style. Those votes are equally distributed among all of MI's counties, just like congressional districts. It would mean that a lot of MIGOPers would be left in the cold when it comes to "primary" voting (obviously, it would no longer be primary voting). It would also mean, however, that those doing the voting would actually BE pubs, not just some folks who made a declaration. FWIW, I am not a voting member. There is only one vote allotted to the downtown Lansing district, and that guy has got the vote to his grave.
I think a really positive effect of this would be that a lot more people would be likely to get involved in their county committees. That can only be a good thing.

If that was in effect now Schwartz would be unopposed, because they would support the incumbent.
However, he likely would never been elected the first time.

He
wouldn't have been elected the first time, period. That's why I like the idea of caucus voting. All the candidates have to face their fellow party members and
prove their creds. The RINOS get weeded out pretty quickly.
I can't remember what candidate it was, this was at a convention in Grand Rapids before the 2004 election...a woman, she was running for a state party office. She forgot to include in her pamphlet lit that she had the RTL endorsement. Naturally, a whisper started going through all the caucuses--"Is she pro-abortion???" She had to go through each and every caucus, assuring everyone that she did, indeed, have a RTL thumbs-up. Ditto NRA, MCRGO endorsements. Any candidates who don't have those by convention time may as well stay home.
