26 Islamic militants caught in Bangladesh
8/3/2006

Dhaka, Aug. 3: Security officers arrested 26 suspected members of an Islamic militant group blamed for fatal bombings that killed and wounded dozens across Bangladesh last year, authorities said on Thursday. Officers also seized explosives and bomb-making materials from the men arrested late on Wednesday at their hideout in Mymensingh district, 112 km north of capital Dhaka, said Lt. Col. Nurul Momen Khan, a security official involved in the raid. Mr Khan said that the men reportedly belong to Jumatul Mujahedeen Bangladesh, an outlawed militant group held responsible for a series of bombings last year that targeted courts and government buildings. On Aug. 17 last year, militants set off more than 400 bombs across the country, most of them targeting court houses and government buildings, the government said. They were followed by more bombings of court houses in two other cities, Chittagong and Netrokona.

Police Bar Non-Muslims From Temple Mount Despite Court Order
19:52 Aug 03, '06 / 9 Av 5766

Despite a High Court decision, Jerusalem's Temple Mount, Judaism's holiest site, was closed to Jews on the Fast of Tisha B'Av, which mourns the destruction of the Holy Temple.

Despite the fact that the Mount represents the focal point of the fast, only Muslim woman and Muslim men over the age of 45 were permitted entry Thursday.

Israel's Supreme Court ruled two days ago that members of the Temple Mount Faithful could ascend the mount on Tisha B'Av during the normal hours during which non-Muslims are usually allowed on the Mount, Sunday-Thursday. The court ruled that the group could not carry placards, dress in a provocative fashion or draw any attention to themselves - and the group's founder, Gershon Solomon, was to be barred from the Mount altogether.

But following threats by Arab MKs and Islamic Movement officials, Police barred not only members of the group – but all non-Muslims. They said the decision was due to a fear of violent clashes between Temple Mount Faithful activists and Muslim protesters.

New NKorea missile bases target US military in Japan: report
AFP on Breitbart.com ^ | 8/3/06 | AFP

Posted on 08/03/2006 12:19:45 PM PDT by NormsRevenge

SEOUL (AFP) - North Korea has been building new underground missile bases along its east coast, targeting Japan and US military facilities in Japan, a report said.

Some 200 Rodong missiles with a range of up to 2,200 kilometers (1,360 miles) and 50 SSN-6 missiles with ranges of 2,500 to 4,000 kilometers are at the new bases, the state-run Institute of Foreign Affairs and National Security (IFANS) said in the report carried by Yonhap news agency.

"The new bases clustered along the east coastal line are for medium- and long-range missiles targeting Japan and US military bases in Japan," read the report by Yun Deok-Min, an IFANS arms control expert.

"Combined with its nuclear weapons, North Korea's ballistic missiles provides it with a powerful deterrent."

North Korea has also constructed new underground missile bases deep in mountains near its border with China, to avoid outside attacks, it said.

The communist nation set off new alarm bells in the region with its July 5 test-firing of seven ballistic missiles which splashed in the Sea of Japan (East Sea). In 1998, it test-launched a missile over Japan.

The UN Security Council unanimously condemned the latest missile tests and adopted a resolution imposing weapons-related sanctions on Pyongyang.

North Korea is said to have a large stockpile of short-range Scuds and medium-range Rodong missiles. It has also tested long-range Taepodong missiles which are in theory capable of hitting US soil.

Sales of missiles and missile technology were believed to be a main source of hard currency for impoverished North Korea, the report said.

North Korea has earned 150 million dollars a year from its missile business, according to the report which cited no sources.

Pyongyang has allegedly sold a total of 500 Scuds to Iran, Libya, Syria, Egypt, and Yemen; a small number of Scuds also to Vietnam and Sudan; and 50-100 Rodong missiles to Iran, Pakistan and Libya, it added.

A Scud missile is said to sell for two million dollars, a Rodong for four million dollars, and a Taepodong-2, the most advanced type, is expected to sell at around 20 million dollars, it said.

North Korea is locked in a standoff with the United States and its allies over its nuclear weapons development which Pyongyang says is for self-defense.

Pyongyang's official Rodong Sinmun newspaper on Thursday warned against Japan's recent US-backed military buildup which it said "is aimed to mount a preemptive attack" on North Korea.

"The Japanese reactionaries had better behave with discretion, bearing in mind that reinvasion of Korea is as foolish an act as jumping into fire with (a) faggot on one's back," Rodong said.

Japan invaded Korea in 1910 and occupied it until the end of World War II in 1945.

Hizbollah kills 11 in deadliest day for Israel

Hizbollah guerrillas killed eight people in a rocket barrage on Israel and three Israeli soldiers in clashes in Lebanon on Thursday, the deadliest day of the war for Israel in 23 days of fighting.

As world powers struggled to agree on a U.N. resolution to end the fighting, both sides threatened to escalate the war.

In a televised speech, Hizbollah leader Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah said the group would target Tel Aviv if Israel attacked central Beirut. Israel vowed to destroy Lebanon's infrastructure if the threat was carried out.

"If you strike Beirut, the Islamic Resistance will strike Tel Aviv and it is able to do so," Nasrallah said, in the first apparent confirmation that Hizbollah has longer-range missiles capable of hitting the city 130 km (80 miles) from the border.

Iran warns oil could reach $200 on sanctions
Reuters ^ | Thu Aug 3, 2006 | Reuters

Posted on 08/03/2006 9:48:37 AM PDT by thackney

CARACAS, Venezuela (Reuters) - Global oil prices could hit $200 per barrel if the United States pursues international sanctions against Iran, an Iranian official said on Thursday, although analysts passed the comment off as saber rattling.

Iran's Foreign Relations Vice Minister Manuchehr Mohammadi told Venezuelan state television, "The first consequence of these sanctions would be an increase in the price of oil to around $200 per barrel."

The statement comes after the United Nations on Monday demanded that Iran suspend all nuclear development within a month or face the threat of sanctions. Iran responded that it had a sovereign right to nuclear development.

"Clearly Iran does not want to have sanctions imposed, so they want to convey the idea that the cost of these sanctions would be incredibly high," said Tim Evans, an Energy Analyst with Citigroup Futures Research.

"While we can't rule out $200 oil, I think we can assign it a rather low probability," he said.

Markets appeared to shrug off the comment, with U.S. crude oil falling $1.01 to $74.80 on signs that Tropical Storm Chris would not become a hurricane.

Tension over Iran's nuclear ambitions, which has rattled oil markets in recent weeks, has been overshadowed by the bloody conflict in Lebanon.

"It serves (Iran's) interests to create this kind of concern in the world community about the price of oil," said Mark Routt, a senior analyst with Energy Security Analysis Inc. "But there are elements to suggest it might not reach that level."

He said high prices have lead to an increase in non-OPEC production and turned once prohibitively expensive projects like Canadian tar sands into profitable ventures.

At the same time, Routt said, product demand has been dampened by alternative fuel products like biodiesel and ethanol.

Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez has backed Iran's nuclear program and developed close ties to the Iranian government. Chavez visited Iran last week as part of a two-week world tour meant to boost global alliances.

Hizballah web site updates, 03 August 2006
SUMMARY OF THE DAY'S CHANGES [03 AUGUST 2006]: al-Manar began operating their www.manartv.com.lb domain at this location yesterday morning: http://24.168.100.67/NewsSite/News.aspx . That is a cable internet connection that traces to Staten Island, New York. There are two possible explanations for this:

1. Someone in Staten Island decided to step up and help Hizballah in their time of need, and the consequences be damned.

2. Hizballah, and specifically their current hosting company, cyberia.net.lb of Beirut, have adopted the practice sometimes used by al-Qaida, and have hijacked someone's computer to this purpose.

The second al-Manar site, www.almanar.com.lb, is now attempting to resume operations in Montreal, but is having technical difficulties at the moment.

A couple of domains have bitten the dust, including the Alabanza-hosted alnour.net, which had been redirecting to alnournews.net in Chicago. The latter remains active. nasrollah.net, nasrollah.org and lebanonhezbollah.com have also been moved to the "inactive column".

UPDATE
• Hizballah's al-Manar website - now in Montreal and... Staten Island .

New Posts
• Alabanza drops alnour.net? [UPDATE 03 AUGUST 2006]

Special Terrorism Summary 08/03/06
Israel At War

24-hour forecast
The situation continues to be very fluid. Expect increased rocket attacks by Hezbollah and the expansion of the ground offensive by IDF (when Olmert finally lets them go).

Godzilla Observations
Disturbing piece of information promulgating across the new wires – China has put the word out for ALL of its citizens in Israel to immediately leave the country. This suggests that some intelligence by the Chicoms indicates that something BIG may be on the horizon.

The ground ‘offensive’ is still going no where fast. The farthest penetration into Lebanon so far has only been about 4 miles – a far cry from the 20 miles to the Litani River. Hezbollah has been employing unconventional tactics including extensive use of guided anti-tank missiles to engage at long distances. One video clip on the web yesterday showed two such missiles fired from a civilian house before it was destroyed. This, combined with the deeply dug in emplacements will make for slow going. Olmert claims the slow pace is to prevent Israeli causalities, but more likely reflects indecisiveness on his part to really let the military do what needs to be done.

IDF Ground Offensive
Israeli troops advanced 4 miles into southern Lebanon Thursday attempting to create a security zone. The size of the IDF ground force currently committed now appears to be approximately 10,000. The IDF have added three new penetrations of the Lebanese territory - one in the general area of Sarda in the eastern portion of the border zone and two in the western portion of the border zone: in the vicinity of Ramyah and a second is further west in the vicinity of Marwahin/Shihin. The thrust toward Shihin appears to have been relatively successful, killing many terrorists and destroying Hezbollah supply storage sites. Heavy shelling is reported this morning in the area, but no significant fighting on the ground. Intensive shelling is reported in all these areas, except in Marun Al Ras. The IDF has maintained and reinforced their presence in five other locations on Lebanese territory :

1. Ayta ash Shab – Very fierce fighting in this area.
2. Marun Al Ras area. This is the area IDF pulled back to after its brief excursion into Bint Jubayl.
3. Mays al Jabal area.
4. Hula/Markaba area.
5. Addasseh-At Tayyabah area including al-Aweida.

In a hopeful sign that Israel is going to get serious in the ground campaign, Senior military officials say Defense Minister Amir Peretz told top army officers to prepare to push Israeli control 18 miles into south Lebanon to the Litani River, The Associated Press reports.

IAF Activity
Israeli jets bombed Hizbollah stronghold in southern Beirut, a bridge in the northern Akkar region, the eastern Bekaa Valley, roads near the Syrian border and around the southern town of Nabatiyeh -- among 70 targets hit.

Hezbollah Rockets
The northern Israeli community of Kiryat Shemona has been hit hard by systematic rocket barrages. Haifa and Acre are also receiving rocket strikes. Firing rates are more densely packed with 100 rockets landing in Northern Israel within half an hour according to Sky News. Additional deaths across N. Israel bringing the count to 8, making today one of the bloodiest one of the rocket blitz.

RUMINT – Continued threat by Hezbollah of rocketing Tel Aviv if Beirut is attacked / bombed. IDF is taking this threat seriously.

Saudi Arabia seeking to acquire private schools in Spain to set up Islamic centers
Catholic News Agency ^ | July 31, 2006 | Catholic News Agency

Posted on 08/03/2006 2:27:36 PM PDT by rrstar96

Madrid - The government of Saudi Arabia is working through its embassy in Madrid to acquire numerous private schools in Spain in order to turn them into Islamic formation centers, where the Koran and Islamic law would be taught.

The strategy to purchase schools was revealed by the Spanish daily "ABC", which discovered that Saudi Arabia had unsuccessfully tried to purchase school buildings operated by the Sisters of Our Lady of Mercy. The Saudi plan was to offer $17 million for a school in Madrid capable of holding 350 students. ABC reported that the offer was rejected "because the religious congregation was opposed to selling the buildings to the Saudis because of their intention to convert them into an Islamic school."

The Saudi embassy is now looking to purchase Our Lady of Mercies Catholic school-which is not affiliated with the religious order-also located in the Spanish capital.

ABC reported that the type of Islam which Saudi Arabia would promote in the schools would not directly encourage "jihad" against the West, but it would discourage integration by teaching that "the West corrupts, which in the long term could result in the breeding of future radicals that could be exported to other countries."

"We could find ourselves in two or three generations with even Spanish citizens who reject the Catholic King and Queen and embrace the reclaiming of Al Andalus-the name Muslims gave to Spain," the article warned.
