Washington senate race can't go well for Democrats
The Decatur Daily Democrat ^ | August 2, 2006 | Donald Lambro

Posted on 08/02/2006 5:36:55 PM PDT by AZRepublican

WASHINGTON - Antiwar critics running against Sen. Maria Cantwell, D-Wash., lost one of their candidates this month when the Washington Democrat hired him to work in her campaign for $8,000 a month.

In a contest that was always one of the Republicans' better opportunities to beat an incumbent, the big story of the summer was Cantwell's decision to hire (and silence) anti-Iraq War candidate Mark Wilson, one of several war critics whose candidacies threatened her bid for a second term.

With polls showing Republican business executive Mike McGavick in a near dead-heat with the liberal lawmaker, as antiwar Democrats attacked her opposition to immediate troop withdrawal, GOP chances of taking her seat have improved significantly.

Cantwell's first response was to buy off her opposition, first with Wilson at the handsome annual rate of $96,000, and then by silencing yet another vocal antiwar critic and potential challenger, Dal LaMagna, by making him her campaign co-chairman.

Her second tactic, in an attempt to defuse a rebellion in her party, was to change her position on a troop pullout. In May her position was that this was a year in transition in Iraq. That evolved into a vote for some modest troop redeployment by year's end. Last week, campaign strategist Michael Meehan said she was now "for changing course" in Iraq. "We think troops should come home by the end of this year."

Her payoff tactics, however, created a furor in the state's newspapers, and the GOP's campaign machine went into overdrive ridiculing her cash offers to eliminate her opposition. "Cantwell campaign strategy: Going once, going twice ... sold!" blared a Republican campaign committee press release.

But yet another antiwar Democrat remains in the Democrats' Sept. 9 primary race. Hong Tran, an attorney who fled Vietnam with her family in the 1970s, said she, too, was asked to join Cantwell's campaign, which she took to mean a job offer. She declined.

Meanwhile, head-to-head polls show the race tightening considerably as McGavick, the former CEO of Safeco Insurance, spent the bulk of the $4.6 million he has raised thus far on TV ads to introduce himself to the voters and challenge Cantwell's liberal voting record.

A Rasmussen poll showed him trailing by 44 percent to 40 percent. A Republican Strategic Vision poll had Cantwell leading by three points.

A Seattle Post-Intelligencer headline on Cantwell's declining polls read, "Cantwell's lead over McGavick nearly gone."

In a telephone interview last week as he toured the state's rural towns in an RV, McGavick explained his rise in the polls.

"Two things are going on here," he said. "One, we're getting better known and people know what my message is and that's building support as we go along. On the other side of the equation, Cantwell continues to face a barrage of aggressive questions from Democrats on her support for the war. That is having the effect of pulling her support down."

McGavick says two overriding issues are driving his campaign and striking a responsive chord in the electorate.

"One is to promote a civil campaign that says this rank partisanship and mean-spiritedness has to stop. We continue to find that this resonates with voters," he said.

"The other is immigration. The senator and I couldn't disagree more on securing our southern borders and the idea that we should end Social Security benefits to those working here illegally.

"Immigration is the one issue voters ask about most and that has the most intensity. More intensity than the war in Iraq," he said.

He acknowledges that "the war is less popular in our state than in other states and there's more people supporting an immediate pullout.

"But I find that if you get in front of audiences and have an open mind and reflect on the reality that we can't just leave them to a civil war in Iraq and that it would be riskier to our troops to have a timetable, that you can pull people over to a more patient approach," he said.

McGavick is making his first run for public office, but he's no neophyte when it comes to the workings of the Senate. He was a chief aide to Sen. Slade Gorton, whom Cantwell defeated in 2000 with 48.7 percent of the vote

He knows it could be an equally tight contest this time around, too. But he also knows that Cantwell's political albatross is her party's antiwar left and pointedly says, "Remember, there will be probably four of us on the ballot" in November. The other two will be third-party candidates running against the war and that means taking votes away from Cantwell.

That sets up the kind of scenario that the senator was attempting to buy off earlier this month. But the Green Party and Libertarian Party candidates can't be bought, and many voters who want us out of Iraq will likely vote for them to "send a message."

That may be just enough votes in a close election to make Mike McGavick the next senator from Washington.

I agree.

But in a very close race, King County Democrats will find a way to maufacture just a few (dozen or hundred) votes to put Cantwell over the top.

I hope that Mike McGavick wins. I can't stand either one of our senators. Murray and Cantwell are two of the most liberal senators in the entire senate. To be honest, they are probably even more far to the left than the liberals in King county who put them into office in the first place.

Who knows, maybe we'll have a fair election this time and actually put the elected official into office. It's hard to come by a fair election in Washington state. Unfortunately, the corruption doesn't seem like it will ease up anytime soon.

Who will count the votes? Cantwell won on two or three weeks of extended recounts. Then we saw the Rossi fiasco. Tell me Republicans have a plan to control that nonsense and I will get interested.

Show me the plan, and then convince me it has some real legal teeth in it, and I will donate money.

A Republican has to win by quite a bit in Washington State to actually get elected...

There is no plan to stop Rat vote fraud in Washington.

If the Senate race is a squeaker, the Dems will steal it, and there will be some wailing and crying, but nothing else.

The Washington state Republican Party acts like a dog that have been beat too often, trembling at the mere thought of confrontation.

You've got it right, Washington is one of the states that will never let a Republican win. Once the votes are counted, the Dems just find any amount they need and go make them up.

She's blistering the airwaves right now with ads that (as you know) yap about Enron, "The Bush Administration", oil price gouging, blah blah blah. I'd like to think her minions are doing this because she's in relative free-fall.

I wonder if McGavick is keeping his powder dry. Is it just me, or is the semantic "election season" getting shorter?

is there a green candidate in this race?

wouldn't it be delicious for a green to take away enough votes to elect a Republican this year, the way the libertarian got enough votes to elect the Democrat in 2000?

I have to agree with you. If it is at all close they will find a way to pull the votes out they need. Oops, a box of ballots found over there, a box over here, ballots mailed out late to Republican leaning precincts and of course the military they might as well be forgotten.

I am praying for a miracle.

In order for it to be Rossi's (and Gorton's) revenge, the GOP candidate has to win by a comfortable margin. Democrats in Washington have a way of "finding" votes in recounts.

LOL! That is a tough call. One praised Bin Laden for his day care centers and hospitals, the other calls him the "alleged" 9/11 mastermind. Who to choose...who to choose? Seriously, I wouldn't call either one "evil", but they are two misguided, poorly-informed peas in a pod.

You're right. Maybe not "evil", but certainly uninformed and misguided. Hopefully, next time elections come around, voters will keep this in mind and force Murray out of office. And hopefully, this time, Cantwell will be replaced by McGavick.

No they can't win close races in Washington, but fraud is only 1/2 of the problem. Voter apathy in Eastern Washington cost Rossi the race.

I've looked at the statewide voter numbers for 2004. Eastern Washington Republican's stayed home in large numbers.

If just a third of the precincts in Republican counties East of the Cascade curtain would have turned out just one more Republican vote each, Rossi would have overcome the cheating.

I haven't seen anything to make me think anything has changed over there. I expect a lousy turnout and that will only hurt McGavick.

FYI-The day before the State Convention in Yakima, 5 Republican stronghold Eastern Washington counties had not turned in their caucus & convention paperwork. Two counties didn't bother holding a caucus or convention.

That does not bode well for McGavick or the State Republican Party.

Do you think the Eastern WA low turnout has anything to do with people believing their vote is meaningless because King County will just manufacture enough votes to overcome whatever Eastern WA does?

Gorton's loss in 2000 was just painful. We had to wait weeks for the result and when Cantwell won it guaranteed a 50-50 split in the Senate that turned out to be a disaster. As I recall, her margin was only 2200 votes. Was there thought to be fraud in that case too? Wouldnt surprise me.

After the 2004 Rossi race where the corruption and election fraud of King County was exposed, many now believe the same shenanigans were pulled in the Gorton/Cantwell race.

I share your concerns. I am active in the party in my area and I have seen problems.

For example, in 2004 we had 65 people submit PCO filings. This year 38. Of course, presidential elections generate more buzz than mid-term elections, but after the Rossi debacle, I expected a larger group to file.

This maybe normal, but it doesn't seem right. Our paid membership numbers have remained constant or I'd be feeling like those guys in the Fed Ex commercial..."We're doomed".

All we can do is make sure everyone in our circles of influence vote, even if we have to drive them to the polls or in my vote by mail county, chase absentee ballots. Otherwise...
