Steve Cohen wins; will face Jake Ford, Mark White in November (Jr. Ford's seat)

State Sen. Steve Cohen won Thursday’s Democratic primary in the Ninth Congressional District.

With all precincts reporting, Cohen had 23,570 votes. Nikki Tinker, who conceded about 10:30 p.m., was second with 19,132.

She was followed by Joe Ford Jr. with 9,329, Shelby County Commissioner Julian Bolton with 8,050 and Ed Stanton with 6,920.

Mark White easily won the Republican primary, collecting 12,013 votes to Tom Guleff’s 2,927

Cohen and White will face independent candidate Jake Ford in the November general election for the seat left open by U.S. Rep. Harold Ford Jr.’s bid for the U.S. Senate. Jake Ford is Ford Jr.’s younger brother.

It was a long, tough road for the 20 candidates on the ballot. In recent weeks, the quest for the Hill became a tense battleground filled with accusations of race and religion-baiting, record distortion and mudslinging.

Democrats Tinker, Stanton and Bolton all butted heads with Cohen over some of these issue and have questioned each other’s records of service.

Early on, cousins Joe Ford Jr., who is running as a Democrat, and independent candidate Jake Ford’s surprise entries prompted speculations from members of both major parties.

However, as Tinker, who raised $527,916, emerged as the financial frontrunner and primary day drew nigh, tensions between campaigns ran high.

"On the issues there's so little to separate these candidates. It's going to turn on name, race, and gender," Marcus Pohlmann, political science professor at Rhodes College and author of "Racial Politics at the Crossroads" told the Commercial Appeal last week.

Other results in the Democratic primary included: Ron Redwing with 2,168 votes, Marvell Mitchell with 1,802, Ralph White with 1,696 and Joseph Kyles with 1,336.

Harold Ford Jr. legacy: His brother is the independent candidate, not the Democrat. Cohen is very liberal, but he is white and I think Jewish, that won this in a very racial city.

Is Joe Ford a relative as well?

Steve Cohen's claim to fame is that he led the charge to get the lottery legalized in Tennessee.

Jr;s cousin. A Ford in nearly every Shelby County race.

Cohen is rear end that I have butted heads many times... But, if I could still vote in Shelby county I would vote for Steve over a Ford.

Based on just those voter totals, the republican doesn't have a chance, do they?

This is my district. LOL. Running a fellow named White in this district might not be the smartest move we have made.

The few conservative bastions of the district are like my neighborhood. They are conservative places gerrymandered in so that they will be heavily outvoted by "the block."

I used to live in that break on 385, as I voted for Blackburn when I lived there in the past. Seems more Pubbies from Collierville and Cordova would come out.

The black agenda is terrifying. I am a lawyer, and the judicial elections where a buffoon won or almost one are unbelievable. Don Southern had been a probate judge for 17 years. His opponent was a young black lawyer who had been a traffic court prosecutor for 2 years. She beat Judge Southern by 500 votes. Last night on talk radio Judge D'Army Bailey said he had a problem with Cohen winning the primary because no black person won in a white district. It is getting out of hand.

I'm in one of the fingers coming off the projection to the northeast along I-40.

"Seems more Pubbies from Collierville and Cordova would come out."

I live between the 385 sign and the 72 sign, and it's pretty sparsely populated. I'd estimate half Dem, half Pub at best.

Collierville is only our mailing address, we are in the county. Very little of Collierville is in the district, and JOHN FORD lives in one of the small sections that is!

Can't remember the names of the two lawyers that exposed the people running for judges, but I thought that was a wonderful bit of information.

A conservative lawyer is a good thing.

My own lawyer in Memphis is a great Godly man.

The GOP voters in the 9th nominated a White guy named White instead of a Black Republican. Consider this seat officially a lost cause in a 3-way race.

As my Grandfather used to say, I've been "studyin' on that" for a couple of years now. If all the financial, career, and family stars line up just right, we will probably do just that. Check your Freepmail, please.
