Six men were arrested over the past 10 days and charged with raping a 12-year-old girl after answering Internet advertisements offering her for sex.
The alleged rapes occurred last summer in the basement of William McLeece Caldwell's home on a quiet Duluth cul-del-sac. The girl often referred to Caldwell as "Uncle Mac."
Caldwell was arrested by federal authorities in November. He is serving a 15-year sentence in a federal prison, according to his wife, Sima Caldwell. Caldwell's conviction on charges of manufacturing child pornography led to the six arrests.
Sima Caldwell said the girl was the daughter of one of her husband's friends. In a federal affidavit, FBI agent Stephen E. Paganucci testified that when authorities first interviewed the girl in November, she told them her relationship with Caldwell began about two years earlier when he began paying her to "model" in various stages of undress and sometimes naked.
According to the affidavit, she referred to Caldwell as "Uncle Mac" and a "substitute dad," and described how he had a video camera hidden in a bookshelf in the basement of his home. Caldwell recorded her performing sex acts with her boyfriend and adult men. The video camera was connected to a television set in the main room upstairs in his home.
Paganucci testified that investigators later found in the trunk of Caldwell's car a tape of the girl having sex with her 14-year-old boyfriend, who also gave a statement to authorities confirming the girl's story.
According to the statement, Caldwell sent e-mail invitations and made phone calls inviting men to have sexual intercourse with the girl.
Gwinnett District Attorney Danny Porter said solicitations for the girl were placed on homosexual as well as heterosexual porn Web sites saying she was available for sex.
He said authorities would try to determine if Caldwell wrote the ads alone or whether the girl was somehow compelled to write any of them.
Authorities said the child estimated she had sexual intercourse with adult men six or seven times during the summer of 2005. On one occasion three men arrived at Caldwell's home and performed homosexual acts in the presence of the girl. The girl said she was often intoxicated when she performed sex acts.
When the FBI searched Caldwell's home on Nov. 4, they found a large collection of child pornography that he downloaded from the Internet. Caldwell admitted he used the hidden video camera to record sex between the 12-year-old and her 14-year-old boyfriend on two occasions. He admitted that on three occasions he knew the girl had sexual intercourse with adult men in the basement of his home.
Paganucci testified that, in addition to video tapes with sex acts, investigators found women's lingerie, about 75 compact discs and a collection of sex toys, more than 100 pornographic photographs of children other than the 12-year old, and photos of the girl and other children in various stages of undress. Most of them appear to have been taken in Caldwell's basement.
The six suspects were identified by the Gwinnett Sheriff's Department on Friday as George Brian Disabato, 52, a real estate appraiser from Grayson; Peter Wookil Janoe, 24, a student from Dunwoody; Charles Hamilton Jundt Jr., 47, a furniture salesman from Norcross; Timothy A. Whitney, 34, of Stockbridge; Brenton James Smith, 22, a student from Atlanta; and Ronald Elliott Bibb 36, a computer programmer from Lawrenceville.
All were charged with statutory rape, aggravated child molestation and aggravated sexual battery, said Stacey Kelley, spokeswoman for the Gwinnett Sheriff's Department.
Jundt is out on $25,000 bail; the other five remain in jail. Porter said Friday that bond was set at that level for Jundt because he has no prior record, had strong ties to the community and did not pose a flight risk.
Jundt's attorney, Edward Garland, said his client was "an outstanding businessman with an impeccable career and character."
As to whether Jundt knew the girl's true age, Garland refused to discuss the issue but said, "This is a very unusual and unintended event. It is an unusual case involving deceptive conduct over the Internet."
Anna Knight, a neighbor of Disabato, said news of his arrest was a "horrible shock." Disabato watched her cats while she was on vacation and was a member of the homeowner's association.
"He's one of those people that everyone in the neighborhood knows and likes," Knight said.
Sima Caldwell said she had been married to her husband for 22 years and they had two children. She said Friday she was planning to sell the house and get a divorce.
She said she did not know about the sexual activity and said her husband deserved his prison term.
"If this happened in my country [Iran], the penalty would be death," she said.
I thought this line alone made it worthwhile to post the article.
This is too sick for words. This child will never fully recover from this.
"If this happened in my country [Iran], the penalty would be death," she said.
This is one area where the Muslims may have the right idea. US justice is much too easy on vermin such as this.
"She said she did not know about the sexual activity and said her husband deserved his prison term."
Baloney, she knew and probably helped win the trust of these children.
In her country wouldn't they just as likely execute the girl?
It puts me in an @ss-kicking frame of mind.
This child will never fully recover from this.
The same God who judges those who abuse the innocent will also heal the innocent.
Probably, but only after they put the finish putting their nuke together...
Down south we have a interesting custom for this type of thing....it involves a tied man, naked, with his "bag" stapled to the wooden floor of a barn. Then the barn is set on fire. He has a 6 inch knife near by.....oh my, choices choices choices......use your imagination. hmmmm burning barn, sharpe knife....
Duluth, GA? Somehow I suspected this wouldn't be Duluth MN. I suspect also there is much more than meets the eye. The 12 year old has parents, What is she doing spending so much time in Uncle's basement?
Do mom and dad know where she is? I suspect she was having sex with boyfriend before this all started. Sounds like a little business deal between uncle and child, but then she is legally still a child so uncle has no excuse.
Uncle Mac already serving 15 years, that was fast, so what is the child up to now? Are mom and dad still envolved, or has she been removed from that home?
"Where was this woman when these SIX (that they know of) men showed up at her house to have sex with a child?"
I would bet she was right there. She helped get the children comfortable and in the house. She probably even made cookies for the children.
Hang'em all
The Muslims may have the right idea?
It would be just that, an "idea". Muslim men are as perverted as any other humans, in lots of cases, worse.
BTW, whatever happened to the case of the 11 year old raped by football players in California? It's like the story died in MSM.
The girl's death.
Right. Death of the girl.
Yes, but if Iran is like most Islamic countries, you can get the death penalty for being raped, too.
Since both Mohammed and Mao liked to have sex with young girls, neither Muslims nor the PRC would be good examples of justice. They both wouldn't even consider this to be a crime.
Vileness continues. If there are no carved-in-stone moral absolutes, then where to draw the line? There can be no line. The only line is that people who disagree with moral so-called relativism are evil and must be silenced.
