'Hizbullah committing war crimes' (Human Rights Watch finally notices)

Hizbullah must immediately stop firing rockets into civilian areas in Israel, Human Rights Watch said Saturday.

"Lobbing rockets blindly into civilian areas is without doubt a war crime," said Kenneth Roth, executive director of Human Rights Watch. "Nothing can justify this assault on the most fundamental standards for sparing civilians the hazards of war."

"Most of the attacks appear to have been directed at civilian areas and have hit pedestrians, hospitals, schools, homes and businesses," the humanitarian organization's website stated.

Since July 12, when Hizbullah captured two IDF soldiers and killed eight, Human Rights Watch researchers have been documenting the war's impact on civilians in Israel and Lebanon, interviewing the witnesses and survivors of attacks, as well as doctors, emergency workers, police, military and government officials.

"Hizbullah must stop using the excuse of Israeli misconduct to justify its own," said Roth.

The organization's Web site recognized that northern Israel had come to a virtual standstill because of Hizbullah's rockets, which were "exacting an enormous human and economic toll."

"Under international humanitarian law - also known as the laws of war - parties to an armed conflict must not make the civilian population the object of attack, or fire indiscriminately into civilian areas. Nor can they launch attacks that they know will cause incidental loss of civilian life, injury to civilians or damage to civilian objects that exceeds the concrete and direct military advantage anticipated. Such attacks constitute war crimes," the site explained.

"Several medical and educational institutes have sustained damage from Katyusha attacks." Human Rights Watch researchers visited hospitals in Nahariya and Safed after they were hit.

At Nahariya Hospital, rockets had been landing near the hospital since July 12, a hospital spokesperson said. "There are no military bases around here; nothing military at all," he said. "I believe they know perfectly well they are firing at a hospital."

"In the absence of troops or military assets inside, hospitals must never be attacked," Human Rights Watch said. "Deliberately attacking them is a war crime."

The fact that Human Rights Watch – or any human rights organization – has declared any enemy of Israel guilty of anything is virtually unprecedented.

In that regard, I agree. But the age old practice of throwing innocents in the line of fire is standard operating procedure for the sub-human terrorists. See what a copy of the Koran can do for your neighborhood ???

No, it doesn't. The passage you outlined speaks of the targeting of civilian areas, not the use of civilian areas to launch attacks. Quite a distinction.

Roth must've just got out of a crack cocaine drying out procedure.. He's a bit late with this assessment of Muzzie tactics..

This is not the entire report by any means. Israel gets smacked down pretty hard too. Go to Human Rights Watch web site:

The use of human shields makes them the objects of attack.

That is unquestionably true, but I'm not sure HRW was addressing that. ...but it's difficult to say for sure.

As if this is anything remotely "new."

Whether HWR was quoting the conventions or paraphasing them, I think my interpretation would be widely accepted and HRW by citing this passage tacitly accepts that interpretation.

Too late. HRW has already shown they sleep with the terrorists.

Did HRW just wake up? These attacks on civilians in Israel have been going on since 1948!

I'd swear I saw HRW on Fox this morning accusing Israel of war crimes.

Do NOT trust Human Rights Watch. This is the same group that reportedly condoned the Hizb'allah kidnapping of the two Israeli troops.

AND, this is the same Human Rights Watch that denounced our U.S. military procedures at Guantanamo, bringing the wrath of the world -- including the traitorous slander of Turban Durbin -- down on the heads of our troops.

They have the wiles of a snake.

When I was in Israel in 1986 our group went to visit the Golan Heights and Lebanese border. We were told that prior to the taking of the area terrorists/soldiers would routinely shoot into northern Israel. So human right's violations against Israelis has been going on for a long time. It would be nice to know how many missiles have been shot into Israel from Lebanon each year. How many have been shot into Israel each month of this year? Anyone know where to get this information?

This is not a disproportionate response if you consider what has been happening for so long. Just the straw that broke Nasrallah's back.

I don't know what was worse...

The limp-wristed liberal, or how Kasich didn't even bother to ask him if he thought the act of firing missiles from civilian areas met the standards for a war-crime.

It's getting where it's easy to spot a liberal.

My wife spotted this one from the kitchen...no audio or captions..and nailed him.

They seem to fall into a pattern.

Voices are even easier. They tend to have high-pitched "squeaky" voices.

Yes, by golly, that'll fix it. A stern leading editorial is sure to eliminate the problem of genocidal fascism. All in a day's work, perky campers!

What buffoons...

Like a broken clock, HRW might be right once in a while.

They are almost grudgingly admitting Hezbollah is committing war crimes. As if they haven't been lobbing missles at purely civilian areas for weeks now.
