Schwarzenegger: South Vietnamese flag can fly on state buildings

The Associated Press

State parks and buildings now have the governor's blessing to fly the former flag of South Vietnam on holidays and special occasions.

Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger signed a largely symbolic measure Saturday that gives the flag the state's official recognition. About 10 states and more than a dozen California cities and counties already have done
so.
Most Vietnamese immigrants who live in Orange County's Little Saigon and elsewhere fled their country after the communists' victory and don't accept the country's current red flag.
Vietnamese leaders have pushed for the traditional flag's recognition for years, said Assemblyman Van Tran, R-Westminster.
The move gained momentum last month when Assemblywoman Lynn Daucher, R-Fullerton, who is running for state Senate in the district covering Little Saigon, appealed to the governor for help.
Both Schwarzenegger and Tran endorsed Daucher in her bid.
Among registered Vietnamese-born voters in Orange County, Republicans outnumber Democrats 2-to-1.
Orange County has about 133,000 people of Vietnamese descent, according to 2002 Census data.

I found this online:

The Garland City Council will host a reception honoring members of Garland's Vietnamese-American community, prior to the Regular Council Meeting. During that meeting the City Council will vote on a resolution to recognize the flag of the former Republic of Vietnam (South Vietnam), known as the Heritage Freedom Flag of Vietnamese-Americans, as the official symbol of the Vietnamese-American Community.

Garland is home to a large population of Vietnamese-Americans, who have made positive contributions to the City through their cultural contributions, business establishments, and active citizenship. The Heritage Freedom Flag has a long history in Vietnam and is a symbol of liberty, resilience, and equality. Those who escaped a region torn by retribution and persecution brought this flag to the United States.

I posted this in 2004 here at FR:

My town of Garland, Texas--suburb of Dallas--officially recognizes the South Vietnamese flag. We have a Vietnamese community center that recently hosted a reunion of South Vietnamese vets and American vets of the Vietnam war. I wish I could have gone to thank both groups for their service.

No cities or states are opposed to the OFFICIAL Vietnam's flag, the red flag with the centered yellow star. The whole world recognizes this flag as the ONLY flag that represents the country and the peoples of Vietnam. This same flag is flying high and proud on the United Nations building, side by side with the rest of the flags of the world.
By recognizing the former Republic of South Vietnam's flag as the one that represents the Vietnamese communities in California, the governor shows that he knows absolutely nothing about this flag and its history. Can he, or anyone, as a matter of fact, tell us which battle against foreign invasion that this flag was flown in? This flag always stood side-by-side with foreign aggressors against the country and the peoples of Vietnam. When the French wanted to regain its control of Vietnam (and Southeast Asia) in 1954, they negotiated for South Vietnam and set up a pro-France government in the South (in the hope of retaining the control on its colony). Guess what flag was flown there: the yellow flag with 3 stripes. It was the red flag with the yellow star that fought so hard for Vietnam's independence against the French as evidenced by the victory at Dien Bien Phu. It was that red flag that many Vietnamese patriots died for at this famous battle and as a result, it was that red flag that was raised at the victory of Dien Bien Phu battle. Where was the yellow flag then?!!!

Just like our own American Flag of Freedom we fought for our own Freedom with long ago,

...the then Free People of South Vietnam fought for theirs under their own Freedom Flag of the Republic of South Vietnam, golden yellow with 3 horizontal red strips, during the Vietnam War.

HO CHI MINH came back from his Paris, France college student days during the 1920's as a fully indoctrinated Communist bent on Communizing all of South East Asia.

To this end HO CHI MINH told the North Vietnamese People that things would get much better in the North and the South of Vietnam once they were both unified under Communism.

There are many, many former North Vietnamese families now living in a Free America because they saw just how deeply they had been lied to all along by HO CHI MINH ..and thus fled Vietnam after the Fall of Saigon. For everything had gotten much worse for both North and South Vietnam under Communism, so very contrary to what HO CHI MINH had said would happen.

All the Free Vietnamese People living in America now want is the return of Human Rights to their still Communist enslaved homeland Vietnam ..with Liberty and Justice for all.

Just like our own Pledge of Allegiance has always lovingly proclaimed..?

Thus, in California ..it's...

I do not think Gov. ARNOLD has much to offer most California conservatives but do you think the demos would give us this.

***Vietnam in foreigner's eyes***

***I saw the freedom in Vietnam***

Updated

Arriving in Vietnam at the beginning of August, Speaker pro Tempore of the California State Assembly Leland Yee (Democrat) witnessed with his own eyes a Vietnam of freedom.

"I enjoyed the freedom when I visited Hanoi. The freedom in Vietnam and the US are the same. Vietnamese people are free to do what they want. It's rare to see an armed force or security force on Hanoi streets. The freedom of the press is the same as it is in other countries", he said.

Being a Chinese-American, Leland Yee has Asian stature and his thought is very close to it of Vietnamese people. While in Vietnam, he visited Ha Long Bay. He plans to travel to Nha Trang after leaving Hanoi.

Leland Yee hopes that he will find opportunities to introduce Vietnamese enterprises to US investors and encourage them to invest in Vietnam after a series of working sessions with appropriate authorities and economic bases in Vietnam. Through economic co-operation, relations between Vietnam and California will be strengthened.

He said that he would take this occasion to discuss a plan of organising of Vietnam's cultural Day in San Francisco at the beginning of next year with related-agencies of Vietnam.

With his full sympathy for Vietnam, Leland Yee strongly opposes the hanging of the flag of the former Saigon puppet government in California. He affirmed that the US Government only recognises the red flag with a five pointed gold star in the middle of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam.

He added that "two days before taking a flight to Vietnam, I informed some people of this decision. Many of them advised me to cancel it because of the historical issues. However, I frankly answered that 1975 belonged to history. Vietnam and the US experienced their war, but now they need to shake their hands, co-operate and become reliable partners so as not to let another the war happen".

NOTE:

Gov. ARNOLD signed an Executive Order recognizing the Freedom & Heritage Flag of Vietnam because California State Assembly Democrat Speaker Pro Temore Leland Yee (after a trip to Communist Vietnam) blocked a Concurrent Resolution from going to the Floor for a vote that would have done so.

A Concurrent Resolution that had already passed through the California State Senate without a single NO vote
