BP is the operator of the field.

--Wow, theyre demanding to know why the pipeline has worn out (normal wear) and why the supply is being interrupted (because the idiot Dems won\\\\\\\'t let them build a new one)--

Dem bashing is a sport I normally enjoy, but, seriously, has anyone from the federal government actually seen the corrosion in this pipe? It is the height of naievete to think that BP--with the blessing of the oil industry as a whole--would not pull a stunt to further raise the price of oil, and thus maximize all-important profits. I am a doubting Thomas on this one. Show me the corrosion (or let some unbiased agency see it) and then I will believe it. I am sick of the oil industry pi**ing on my back and telling me it is raining!

The pipeline from the North Slope to Valdez is not the problem.

The problem is BP's lines within the North Slope. It is becoming clearer by the minute that they had been neglecting maintenance on these pipes for years.

And to think they might very well profit off all of this...

How do you do maintenance without shutting it down?

Pigs and scrapers...

Its simple enough - everyone (else) seems to be doing it.

Most companies run scrapers through every week or so. BP evidently hadn't done it in years.

The article says that the pipeline already ruptured over the weekend.

I hate BP, so I’m happy to see them get some bad press, but the fact is, eco-nuts in Congress have a plan for government oversight of energy companies. They know that they can’t just nationalize them, so they are starting small and appointing government liaisons, who are supposed to act like class monitors, and report any situations, or violations to the government. It’s 21st century fascism.

BP the enviromentally friendly oil company has been cutting corners for years by not pulling preventive maintaince. The big managers make big bonouses doing this and the workers go through h*ll trying to do what is right.

The problem with BP is it’s operating philosophy which pits all the control centers against each other for net profits. The easiest way to reduce cost is to cut maintenance which is usually handled by contractors. BP has been getting away with it for years because they run all the operations in areas where they do business. If a company didn’t like the way BP operated, they bought them.
