Since the attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, the claim has often been made that no further acts of terrorism have occurred on U.S. soil. But anyone following the news closely knows better.
While there has not yet been another large-scale attack, a number of terrorist plots have been broken up and a variety of suspicious crimes and incidents have occurred across the nation. But each time, authorities seem to have made every effort to downplay the terrorism angle.
News of the shooting rampage at Seattle's Jewish Federation building last month involved the usual avoidance of the term "terrorism." Instead, the attack was labeled a hate crime and the perpetrator, Naveed Afzal Haq, just another in a long line of lone gunmen with a history of mental instability. As Seattle Mayor Greg Nickels put it, "This was a purposeful, hateful act, as far as we know by an individual acting on his own."
While this may be true, trying to separate Haq's actions from the larger context of the war on terrorism is tunnel vision at its worst. It is not just hate that motivates such acts, but ideology. One needn't be a bona fide member of an Islamic terrorist group to share their outlook.
Haq made his motivations quite clear when he told a 911 operator during the attack that he was a "Muslim American" who was "angry with Israel" and the United States for the war in Iraq. "I want these Jews to get out
I'm tired of getting pushed around, and our people getting pushed around by the situation in the Middle East," he added.

Hm...
The San Francisco Chronicle?
Good article.
Cool!! A conservative in San Fran! I had no idea!!
I've noticed this myself. Terrorism is never suspected, even when Arab appearing men attempt to buy hundreds of pre-paid cell phones..or never arrive at College..
Good article from The SF Chronicle, but I imagine it is written to undermine the President rather than a benign attempt to expose the truth.
They see it as a way to compromise the Republicans' claim of being stronger on national security, really weak attempt in my opinion.
Did you mention the Lone Gunmen?
Did you mention the Lone Gunmen?
Now there's a show I miss...
I know, for a few years it was by far the best thing on.
A beautiful mind has been opened. Thanks.
One big problem is that if anybody in the administration acknowledges that some or all of these are terrorist acts, they'll have to quit assuring us of their success keeping terrorism overseas.
(JFK was whacked by a trio of irate Husbands armed and funded by rouge CIA agents)
Right after 9/11 and the Egyptian walked to the end of the LA terminal to shoot people at the El Al counter, Neil Cavuto practically yelled at someone for thinking that this was more terrorism. It was at that time that I decided I no longer needed his show as the seemingly knee-jerk reaction of media types is that none of the Islamofacist acts are in any way connected to either an area of the world or their fanatic religion (absolutely none of it is a "Religion of Peace.")
Neighbors said he was a good boy, kind of quiet. keeped to himself.
Cinnamon is an excellent writer. I have emailed her and thanked her for her point of view. She receives very little thanks, incidentally. A word of encouragement wouldn't hurt.
Off topic, but for those who might be interested, her Mother was one of the entertainers that spent time in Viet Nam entertaining us troops, for a couple years. She has a DVD out, a doumentary about those who willingly came over just to entertain us.
