France to deport 'model student'

(Filed: 10/08/2006)

A Nigerian teenager who is described as a model student is to be deported from France as the authorities intensify a crackdown on illegal immigration that critics have branded a "child hunt".

Jeff Babatundé, who had been sheltered by a teacher until his arrest last week, failed in a legal challenge to an expulsion order and is likely to be sent back to Africa before an appeal is heard.

Mr Sarkozy wants to deport 25,000 illegals

Mr Babatundé, 19, says he has no close relatives in Nigeria, which he fled in 2004 after being caught up in rioting. He says his mother was murdered the previous year.

The Réseau Education Sans Frontières group (RESF), which opposes the immigration purge by Nicolas Sarkozy, the interior minister, fears that the present trickle of cases could become a flood before the school summer holiday ends.

France has up to 400,000 illegal immigrants and Mr Sarkozy, a presidential hopeful, wants to remove 25,000 of them by the end of the year. Volunteers are providing safe havens in their homes for other immigrants, many younger than Mr Babatundé, in the hope of saving them from being deported.

By placing siblings at different addresses, they hope to exploit rules preventing the expulsion of minors without their brothers and sisters.

Mr Sarkozy has ordered a "humane but firm" enforcement of new rules governing stricter residency criteria. He rejects RESF's portrayal of his policy as a "chasse aux enfants", and says each case is considered on its merits.

Catherine Bayru, a Paris teacher, said she was shocked by the decision upholding Mr Babatundé's expulsion. She said his return to Nigeria would be a "catastrophe". He had been living with her family since March, after his asylum plea was rejected.

It's the same here.... Mexicans are allowed to stay, but Cubans are kicked out whenever possible.

Evidently, there are French people that hate their own country even worse than I hate their country!

So it's not like he's a kid who slipped through the cracks and is being thrown out before he can access the system...
