Officials Probe Lieberman Web Site Crash
AP ^ | 8/10/6 | PAT EATON-ROBB

Posted on 08/10/2006 1:17:34 PM PDT by SmithL

U.S. Sen. Joe Lieberman's campaign Web site remained offline Thursday, and federal and state authorities were investigating why it crashed on the eve of this week's defeat in a high-profile primary.

The site, Joe2006.com, appeared to have suffered from a so-called "denial of service" attack, in which computers overwhelm a site with fake traffic so real visitors can't get through, said Richard M. Smith, an Internet security consultant in Brookline, Mass.

The Lieberman campaign denied speculation among liberal Web pundits that the centrist Democrat's Web site had simply crashed because it used a low-budget Web host unable to handle the volume.

Web hosting can cost anywhere from a few dollars a month for a personal Web site to thousands of dollars for large corporate sites.

The campaign spends about $100 to $150 a month on Web hosting services with MyHostCamp, said Dan Geary, who administers the site for the campaign. Geary said that MyHostCamp, which is owned by a friend of Geary's, gave the site more than enough bandwidth — 200 gigabytes a month — to handle a crush of visitors.

He said an analysis of the server suggested an attack that focused on specific components of the Web site such as internal files and e-mail.

But Smith said that even if there's enough capacity, as important is the amount of security it has to keep intruders out.

"There are measures that can be implemented to protect against this type of attack," Smith said. "I think they went a little cheap here. This kind of looked like a low-budget hosting service."

Geary insists security was adequate, saying MyHostCamp's servers are monitored by a larger company, Server Matrix, and administered by a major Web hosting company, The Planet.

You do what you need to do, but Lieberman is still a Liberal, even if he isn't as liberal as MoveOn wants.

Those DUmmies are so funny! (not)

If this had been done by conservatives, the site would still be up but would say, "All your Senators belong to us!"

Donate to the Republican sacrificial lamb instead. He still needs all the help he can get.

He may be a liberal in some views but more importantly, he understands the importance of winning the WOT. Since the Republican doesn't have a chance, I'll support the one best for America rather than waste my contribution on a noble gesture.

His web site isn't functioning yet
except for a message that Lamont
ought to apologize for the hacker
activity. I've written Lieberman's
Senate office for more info on when
the site is expected to be up. But
we all know only minor staff members
read those e-mails. If he wants
contributions, he'd better get a site
up quick!

What do the current laws say about this kind of an attack? It would be interesting to know in this time of terrorism. I don't think it would be looked on as a simple prank. It could be construed to be illegaly tampering with an election process.

Can't wait to find out what the investigation turns up, and who spends a little time getting to think it over on the public's dime.

I'm not close to forgiving/forgetting what he and Gore put the country through in the 2k elections.

Pity for him that he chose to live his political life in an anti-semitic party.

I'm glad he's moving to Indy rather than Republican tho, as we have enough RINOs in our ranks.

My only hope is that he'll win and vote with Republicans enough just to spite Jew-hating Democrats.

"Lieberman is still a Liberal"

If not even worse!

But I still plan to send him a few bucks.

I'll send a few bucks to Romanelli (Green Party) if he manages to get on the Pennsylvania ballot, too.

I gave money to Nader in 2000 (like Ben Stein did), and if it weren't for crazy ol' Ralph in 2000, we'd be in the second term of the Gore administration. President Gore would have already ceded New Jersey and Michigan to the Taliban.

It's worth $100 to me to watch two Demonrats disembowel each other. Not to mention that a decisive Lieberman win will make the pols and pundits heads spin.

Yes, but on the good side, they would not be investigating at all but for the false allegation that it was a GOP trick.

Yet, another example of Democrats in New England using technology to cheat in an election.

Last time it was the Democrats jamming John Sununu's phone banks in New Hampshire and now Sen Lieberman is their victim

Joe should, but state and federal officials should get to the bottom of it.

As for this not costing him the election, I think you're absolutely right. It still doesn't mean that this wasn't election tampering, whether successful or not.

The campaign spends about $100 to $150 a month on Web hosting services with MyHostCamp, said Dan Geary, who administers the site for the campaign.

WTF? No way are they getting enough bandwidth to handle the level of traffic a bellwether Senatorial campaign site gets right before the election.

Sorry, but you've pretty much fessed up that, for one, the KOssacks are correct.

I was also going to say that that was not enough money spent to handle traffic on any decently hit site much less a candidate's site right before he goes up for an election.

Also, I don't see any way shape or form that this could be construed or that anyone could be punished under the guise of tampering with an election.

Possibly other things but tampering with the outcome of an election. The basis for my thoughts? Websites for politicians are not a Right guaranteed by anything(even though the average liberal thinks Internet access is a guaranteed right to all people on the entire Earth).

But I could be wrong. It has happened in the past...once!

Ned Lamont came out against the WOT and our government's taking on the terrorists on their own turf. He is a Bush hating leftie. He is the ultimate rich limousine liberal. He may have supported the war in Afganistan, but he has gone belly up since then. I would rather see Conneticut send a Republican to the Senate, short of that Joe would be better that Lamont. I just wouldn't donate money to Joe.
