New details emerge in airline terror plot
ABC News ^ | Aug. 11, 2006 | ABC News

Investigators around the world are in the process of tracking suspects and working to fill in details about the plot to blow up 10 U.S.-bound flights.

We have learned that one of the suspects arrested by British authorities in the airline terror plot has just been released. Scotland Yard has not given any further details on which suspect or why they were let go.

The material is called acetone peroxide - a deadly explosive. It is believed each terrorist would bring ingredients on board, and assemble them while on the plane.

Then someone would use a spark from a disposable camera's flash as the detonator. Law enforcement officials say they are fighting a losing battle as long as the hunt is for a bomb not the bomber.

Good Lord in Heaven, a quick google search gives plenty of sites on how to manufacture an explosive from this stuaff and how to make the acetone peroxide in the first place.

Any halfway committed extremist can get his hands on AQ training manuals that walk you through exactly how to do it. The reality is the internet has made it possible for anyone to be a terrorist. All you need are a few guys who believe in the cause, a little money to invest, and a little prep time. With the refining of the terrorist model over the last few years, it's possible to go from zero to jihad in six months.

Google hints at what's out there, but there's far, far worse.

We need to boycot google.

There's no point. That information is all over the internet. Even hardcore jihadist websites are only a few clicks away. Many mosques will have one or two guys that 'know people', and can point you in the direction of some very explicit and informative websites.

US Answer: the GrandMother, of course...

Slight correction; 80 year old Lutheran grandmother greeting the screener with a 'Uf Da', and wearing a "Lutefist - The piece of Cod that passes all understanding" T-shirt.

After all, we know it's those darn Christians who are behind this, thanks to Karl Rove.

"Acetone peroxide is so lethal it is appropriately called MOTHER of SATAN."

Since these Islamic Facists are pushing the Religon of Satan, I can see the connection.

Why!!!! That's .... profiling!!!!

We can't have that!!! The PC crowd would go into meltdown.

We have to keep searching Scandinavian Methodists and shady-looking Southern Baptists and those shifty-looking Mormons.

[/s]
===

Even if the Islamic terrorists fail in their mission to blow something up, look at what they succeed in accomplishing: TSA is in panic mode, every passenger of every airline has additional security to undergo, security measures are beefed up. The result: inconvenience and cost in $$$$$$$$$$. Who won this round and who lost?

Law enforcement officials say they are fighting a losing battle as long as the hunt is for a bomb not the bomber.

We are still not addressing the real problem. Unless and until we do, the Islamic terrorists continue to mount up little wins here and there. Look at the Israeli white flag being waved in the UN this morning. Who won there? It sure wasn't Israel.

US Answer: the GrandMother, of course, because instead of looking for suspicious passengers they use random selection, and she was the one who came up for random search.

And this is the truth, which disgusts me. I hate liberals and PC.

My 70YO Mother was pulled aside and systematically searched on a recent trip. Partially disabled and in pain, she was escorted aside and scanned by airport security, despite explicit papers denoting her condition.

I question of the competence of the authorities who make policy that brutally harasses our most gentle and loving of our nation while catering to murderous Islamofascists. They are as much an enemy as the fascists themselves.

Last week while returning home from a business trip, I personally saw TSA hassle at least ten different, obviously very elderly people, several in wheel chairs or with walkers, just for the sake of random selection or whatever. It was humiliating for those folks, and a couple of them literally stumbled or fell through the security check point, while everyone else in the security line glared at the YSA guys for being so stupid. It really was pathetic and I'm still mad about it...!

Random won't catch anything --- we must use profiling.

And if we're counting on catching the bomber at boarding gate then we're only fooling ourselves. Random searching is just that, random. And profiling is too easy to beat. The only way to beat them is to uncover the plot and arrest them before they ever get near the airport. Just like in this instance.

"Terror's white convert: Abdul Waheed, 21, changed his name from Don Stewart-Whyte six months ago"

Goes to prove that racial profiling is not going to work.

Umm... maybe the name "Abdul" would be a tip off.

When I was visiting Israel a few years back, I took an El Al flight to Rome for a few days before coming home. The security guys pulled me out of line, tore my luggage apart & interrogated me with the eyeball to eyeball technique where they monitored every blink & lateral wobble. The whole process took about 30-40 minutes. I can assure you I look nothing like a mideastern terrorist & I'm way more anglo looking than this British-born convert. But I was a female travelling alone, I understood that I fit a different kind of profile & I was more than happy to let them pick me apart limb from limb - my safety & my fellow passengers' safety depended on it.

The point is that the Israelis don't mess around with only ethnic profiling, neither should we. ME terorists have been known to cultivate western women & use them as unwitting couriers for bombs. They could just as easily run a distraction scam & turn your feeble old granny into a walking bomb without her knowledge in 3 seconds. I'm with El Al. Racial profile and hassle the swedish grannies & mormon toddlers. Those of you who think we'll be safe doing only one of these are kidding yourselves.

Well, the photo of the detainee just doesn't look that Caucasian to me. He, himself, probably thought so too. He probably thought that he looked more like THEM than US. THEY probably thought so too.
Having said this and having spent years in Saudi Arabia myself as an imported worker I can tell you that there are many many Saudis whose skin tone and color is indistinguishable from, say, Bill Clinton. So, keying on skin color by itself is a fatal flaw. So is ID documentation. More factors such as biometrics would have to be brought to bear.

I agree with you, leilani.
We can't have it both ways.
Airport security is shocked to search and 'wand' a cheerful female travelling alone. It's hard on them, too, and I've found them very apologetic.

Biometrics wouldn't solve the problem of the dumb-as-a-post green-eyed redhead dating a man who she thinks is named Paolo but whose real name is Abdul who has trained her to illicitly slip an "illegally imported perfume for his mama's birthday"/detonator down your blonde&blue baby's diaper or stick a "prescription med for his dying aunt back in Verona"/bomb down your elderly Alsatian grandma's blouse while she "helps" them get into their airport-bound cabs. In fact, the elderly & pre-verbal toddlers would be extremely tempting targets for bombers who don't want to go the suicide route. It's not anywhere near as easy to screen against this threat as some people seem to think. Resticting swarthy men whose passports say Mohammed or whose biometrics "read" ME Jihadist from travelling ain't ever gonna cut it.The Israelis sure as hell understand this, and they've been dealing with this a bit longer than we have.

What is the most jail time, these members of the Death Cult, can get...maybe 5 years, so they are back on the street, even more determined to kill...they should locked up on a "Devil's Island"...remote and isolate, from the rest of the world, to remain there, forever.....frankly, I am all for shooting them by firing squad, at 0500 hrs, on Fridays...

If you were a screener, and if you have a choice of searching this guy, an 80-year old GrandMother

Depends. Is the 80-year old grandmother Middle Eastern? /jk :-)

I'm no expert, though I have had a lot of chemistry training:

As well as I can determine, if you use "hair-dying" grade H2O2, the TATP may have to be dried before being useful because that grade is 6% water. However, if you use food-grade (30%), the acetone-H2O2 solution which also has TATP in it is itself quite unstable and might be able to be detonated without drying. I'm not certain-I haven't tried it. It seems certain that using even more pure H2O2 such as the very dangerous 70+% used in rocketry would require nothing more than mixing and setting it off.
