I think you're putting too much onus on the "vegetarian" Gandhi-Nehru family and your claim that Gandhiji slept with his niece is unsubstantiated. The "smiling Buddha" was meant as a deterrent against China and I am not sure it was to go on the offensive against Pakistan. Even today, India doesn't need nukes to level Pakistan why would nukes have given it any more confidence at that time?

The minute that Pakistan achieved nuclear parity with India in 1988 the Kashmir war was unleashed. Considering the history of that fruit-basket nation couldn't India have predicted this would happen in 1976? 1976 was an asymmetrical position - thats when its EASY to achieve major changes in the basic strategic position.

India could have ensured DECADES of peace by dividing Pakistan into several manageable states. If it had done this today there would have been no KASHMIR TERROR, PUNJAB TERROR, MUMBAI BOMBINGS, ISLAMIC BOMB - think about that.

Once symmetry was restored in 1988 once Pakistan basically laid the foundation for their nuke, back to Kashmir and India was hamstrung.

The US has ensured no hostile state close to it possess nukes. Dont blame the US for the problem which is in Indias neighborhood. India needs to take care of its own interests. Forget about Afghanistan China etc. 1976 India should have ended the Pakistan problem ONCE AND FOR ALL. That would have resolved a lot of problems for a lot of people around the world.

The problem has its routs in the post-Independance pacifist mindset and vegetarian movement of many Indians which still exists until today. The fact is that India didn't achieve Freedom through "Bapu Ji" spinning Indian cotton but THROUGH THE FEAR OF WIDESPREAD MASSACRES OF BRITISH OFFICERS. Ultimately all Freedom is won through the use of steel.

As for "Bapu Ji" sleeping nude with his nieces, I think its well documented and even accepted in India now. Hey, I'm not saying he actually did anything naughty, but thats one saucy old-man.
