The last of seven members of the North American Man/Boy Love Association caught in an FBI sting last year was sentenced to more than three years in federal prison yesterday for planning to travel to Ensenada to molest boys.
David Mayer, 50, a Chicago flight attendant and psychologist, said he can only claim “temporary insanity” for his decision to join NAMBLA, which seeks to legalize sex between men and boys.
“I am mortified and ashamed by my actions,” Mayer told the judge.
He said that, like Hester Prynne in the Nathaniel Hawthorne novel “The Scarlet Letter,” “I, too, will be a pariah for the rest of my life. I will be treated like a leper.”
Prosecutor Anne Perry said Mayer came up with the idea of traveling overseas for sex with children during a 2004 NAMBLA conference in Miami and kept his job as a flight attendant primarily for the travel benefits.
Outside court, a defense lawyer disputed that.
During the sting, an undercover FBI agent recorded Mayer boasting of traveling abroad to have sex with boys.
“I'm embarrassed I can't even remember how many times I've been to Southeast Asia. And to Mexico and a lot of other Third World countries,” Mayer said in the recording.
Mayer pleaded guilty to conducting traveling in interstate commerce for the purpose of illicit sex.
A deal with prosecutors allows him to appeal a judge's decision that the undercover agent acted properly when he infiltrated the group, attended two conventions and set up the bogus trip to Ensenada.
His lawyer, Benjamin Coleman, argued that the FBI acted outrageously during the investigation and instigated criminal conduct.
He also argued that the group is legally protected by the First Amendment's rights of free speech and association, and the FBI shouldn't investigate it.
Posing as a NAMBLA member, the agent agreed to host the group's 2005 conference in San Diego, but those plans were scrapped after last year's arrests during the weekend before Valentine's Day.
Yesterday, U.S. District Court Judge Jeffrey T. Miller also ordered Mayer to be supervised during the 12 years following his 37-month prison term, and to register as a sex offender, undergo psychiatric testing and treatment and avoid contact with children.
The judge said he expected Mayer would lose his psychologist's license, and Coleman said the conviction would also cost Mayer his job as a flight attendant.
Mayer and two other men were arrested on Harbor Island in San Diego on Feb. 12, 2005.
A bogus travel agency set up by the FBI had told the men they would travel by boat to Ensenada, where they could molest children.
The other two men, Dallas dentist Phillip Todd Calvin, 45, and bodybuilder Paul Zipszer, 40, of Deltona, Fla., pleaded guilty in February, and were sentenced to 24 months in prison.
Four other men were arrested in Marina del Rey in Los Angeles. Two received 37-month prison sentences, another was sentenced to 14 years, and a fourth man who was sentenced to 30 years in prison.
In addition, an Orange County pastor and chiropractor who told the undercover agent that he traveled to San Diego to have sex with a teenager in Balboa Park was sentenced to five years in prison on child pornography charges.
The investigation brought to light many of NAMBLA's activities, including its annual conferences, a program to send holiday cards to imprisoned members and its efforts to connect men who advocate sex with boys.
While two members of the group's leadership were among those who were arrested, the group continues to publish a newsletter and maintain a Web site, and other groups with similar outlooks remain active.
“As long as we have the Internet, NAMBLA will be around,” said Perry, the prosecutor.

Maybe we should send more Nambla members down to Mexico. That way the people will realize that it's not safe to come here and thus reduce the number of illegals crossing the boarder.

That must be an extremely hard task to undertake. For one, I very much appreciate how difficult working such an undercover assignment can be. How many showers would you have to take to feel clean again after being around those people?

I've often heard that psychologists and counselors in general are some of the most screwed up people. They gravitate towards that field in an effort to self diagnose and treat their problems.
I wonder how many disturbed people this guy raped. How many he convinced to get a sex change operation.
Its people like this that use their credentials to change policies for the major healthcare groups to accept homosexuality etc as normals behaviors.
No doubt the ACLU will be appealing this.

I am assigned at a public higher ed institution. As part of my job (responsible for Internet connections, etc.) We blocked all access to the NAMBLA web-site - period. I have yet to have someone complain about this action.
Academic freedom has limits. Web-sites that advocate sex between adults and children exceed that limit.

Every psychologist I've ever met met has been absolutely nuts. One of them (worked at the LA Unified School District counseling teens) was so nuts that I'm writing a book about her.
