Passenger's Claim Shuts Down Customs at Detroit Airport
AP via WXYZ-TV ^ | August 12, 2006 | AP

The U.S. Customs area at Detroit Metropolitan Airport was briefly shut down today after a passenger claimed he had contaminated everyone on a flight from Amsterdam.

Officials say a U.S citizen got off a Northwest Airlines flight and implied to the crew he had a biological agent of some sort and had contaminated the flight.

Airport emergency medical technicians examined the man and decided that he did not pose a health risk.

The man was eventually allowed to leave.

It took about 90 minutes to investigate, and other passengers from Amsterdam were delayed in leaving. Passengers on two flights from Japan were not allowed to enter the customs area for about an hour during the investigation.

There's a little more info here from the Detroit News, but we can't post from that website due to copyright complaints. A CDC staffer was at the airport, and agreed that the man didn't pose a health risk. The airport spokesman said the man might have been suffering from a mental disorder. The Detroit News said that it wasn't clear where the man was headed.

So why is a person who causes a major public disturbance (at great expense to others) not named? Would we learn something from the name that is not in the article?

A mental case is permitted to leave but not in a straight jacket.

I want to know why he wasn't arrested for making a terrorist threat, and was released after only 90 minutes. Something doesn't add up.

"Why was he not named?"

Why was he allowed to leave? He should have been charged with interfering in a flight.

I'm just reading between the lines here, but it sounds as if he was either some nut or a wiseacre college kid who made a bad joke. He was coming from Amsterdam, after all. It said that he "implied" there was a biological agent. I'd like to know his exact words to the crew as he was exiting the plane.

"I'm just reading between the lines here, but it sounds as if he was either some nut or a wiseacre college kid who made a bad joke."

That's what I'm thinking. Sort of like the people who have been arrested for "Yes I packed my bag myself sir, I had to make sure the bomb was packed correctly, ho ho ho" sort of comments at check in.

People like this need to be tagged before they're released. At least put on the "No fly" list unless accompanied by a responsible adult (if presumed to be merely mentally unstable)

Well, I don't know... If he was suffering from a mental disorder, it might have infected any liberals who were on the plane with him.

Why wasn't he arrested for causing a disturbance? His words didn't fall under 'freedom of speech'...he basically yelled "Fire" in a crowded airport! What if he, himself is the vessel and was contaminated hours before the flight?

Wrong move on the part of security...he should have been detained and quarentined...idiots.

"The man was eventually allowed to leave."

WTF, O? Why isn't this guy in jail, and why isn't the fool who let him walk away out of a job?

I have a feeling that this guy probably was ticked off at the heightened security measures for flights into the US. I was in Hong Kong airport the day after the terror plot was found out and there were all sorts of people who had flown in from Europe and were on layovers for flights to the US holding their little plastic bags and griping and whining about the security measures to anyone who would listen. The guy was probably complaining with a sarcastic joke one last time before he got off the flight. He was probably just an idiot.

Good point."And billed for the expense of the delays and the investigation."Which easily runs into the thousands of dollars.
