College students have organized clubs on dozens of campuses to defend their Second Amendment rights -- and to have fun with guns.
"We go to the gun range because it's fun and educational," said Michaela LeBlanc, a senior at Smith College in Northampton, Mass. Miss LeBlanc travels to the nearby Smith & Wesson Shooting Sports Center with friends from the Smith College Republicans. This fall, they will seek recognition from the college as an official club.
At the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Dax Dixson founded the Tar Heel Rifle and Pistol Club. He said he thought fellow students would benefit from shooting, a skill he started learning before elementary school. The club sponsors lectures on Second Amendment rights and gun safety and travels to ranges to allow members to practice shooting disciplines.
Mr. Dixson said the university provides funding for speakers and shooting supplies on the condition that club members use all ammunition on the same day they purchase it.
The conservative Leadership Institute, based in Arlington, is among the outside organizations helping students start campus gun clubs.
The institute formed its Campus Leadership Program in 1997 "to assist conservative students in the forming of independent groups on their own campuses," said Morton Blackwell, founder and president of the institute. "In many cases, the left has succeeded in making campuses left-wing indoctrination centers."
Field representatives from the Campus Leadership Program help students "choose what the focus of their activities is going to be," he said, and then work with them to develop the leadership skills they need to maintain their organization.
He said about 45 of the 738 active groups with which the program works are dedicated to Second Amendment issues.

Don't send that check to the alumni association unless you want more of the same anti-constitutional drivel. What I do (and I live in the town where I graduated college, but you could adopt one), is contact the college Republican club (there will be one). Invite some of the kids out to your gun range (not too many). Be prepared to 1) pay for ammo 2) have enough of your friends so there is one experienced shooter per gun 3) share several of your guns and 4) provide basic safety instruction. It is a real pleasure to meet the kids and we have had a great time here in the Santa Barbara. AND you get to do something really subversive - teach a college kid how to shoot. We have had as many as thirty kids at one time up to shoot - it's a real good social time too. To hades with the left-winger profs - the college kids are (still) alright.
I'm generally highly pro-2A, but I'm not sure that arming Smith Girls is a really good idea.

I guess it tells a lot about how ago it was, but when I was a freshman at that college in downtown New Haven, I shot on the freshman rifle team; my rifle was stored in the security office for me to check out whenever I needed it.
I used to carry concealed in College. That was back in the 1970s. 9mm combat commander.
When I went into the Army I moved up to the .45ACP combat commander.

I don't know what specific things from the media you've heard to cause you to think like that, but I do know that 99% of what comes from the media is BS.

Nothing from the media... just lots of real life exposure to the Smith product and occasionally to the wretches that pass for professors there.
but I do know that 99% of what comes from the media is BS.
Now there is a proposition that we both may agree upon.
And yes, I did note that the student quoted in the article was a member of the school's college Republicans, and I was amused to think at how offended 88% of the student body and 108% of the faculty must be, that there is any such thing!

In the absence of chivalry, and it's been drummed out of men for most of a century now, a woman needs to look to her own safety. I have no daughters, but most of my Special Forces buddies have at least one, and every single one has been taught to defend herself in the only way that we know works: with a firearm. All the judo stuff looks cool and builds fitness and self-confidence, but the most impressive female martial artist I've ever seen needs to be armed to handle a rogue male (I won't dignify the atavistic throwback that raises his hand to a woman with the title "man").
