NOVATO, Calif. -- A North Bay firefighter is back on duty after an unusual attack late Thursday night that turned into a hazmat situation.
A man knocked on the door of the fire station near the corner of San Ramon Way and San Marin Drive in Novato at about 11:30 p.m.
A firefighter answered and saw a man wearing goggles and surgical gloves and holding a gallon-sized bag with a white powdery, crystal-like substance inside. The man tried to hand the firefighter the bag but the firefighter refused. The man turned and ran to a car where a second person and they drove away.
The firefighter did not handle the bag but he said he felt a burning sensation on his face.
The firefighter was hosed down and decontaminated. He was also sent to a hospital to be checked out because he still felt a burning sensation.
Hazmat crews spent about four hours testing the area and the fire station for dangerous substances, including nerve agents.
The two men were in a silver Toyota Corolla, firefighters said.

I went on a call once with the report of "bomb thrown on the roof of a convenience store".
When we arrived at the store I went inside and the middle eastern dude reaches under the counter then hands me a bag containing two pipe bombs with the fuses burnt down to the nub.
Everything slowed way down to say the least.
I walked out side and set them down in the parking lot then we backed off 100 feet ad called the bomb squad. They put them in a trailer and blew them up.

An evil eye works by proximity. Dust particles could do skin irritation. Alternatively, one's own imagination could do the trick.

Any chemical will create a burning sensation merely by close proximity,..........
If you think it will.
I've had aboout 20 people show up at the ER because they heard their building was sprayed for bugs the night before. They complained of eye irritation, throat burning, burning skin, dizziness and shortness of breath. Upon investigation, it was discovered that another building had been sprayed and the rumor was unfounded. We had no patients from the building actually sprayed.

WHat chemicals can create a burning sensation merely by close proximity? Think placebo effect. Or Sick Building Syndrome. The mind is a powerful thing.

Very nasty stuff but only fatal if caught in an enclosed area. We used to lay it in NVA bunkers

I used to perform UXO/range cleanup duty (part time) while serving in the USAF. The *real* EOD guys would say "What is the difference between a dud and live ordinance?"
The answer is course is "Nothing".
We would flag the object and they would put a patch of C4 on it and blow it in place. Sometimes a small bang, other time a real big bang.

Urea formaldehyde resin will do that for me. Or fumes from bondo. (Or chilies cooking.)

I know that firestation. I know that area very well. Seems something was sprayed into the doorway after/prior to the "knock"; the bag was simply a ruse: IMHO, and from what's available as data in this article.
There's obviously something "personal" being played out. Pretty viscious, live-time, "knock-knock" prank.
