UN Secretary General Kofi Annan announced Saturday night that the IDF activities in Baalbek constitute a violation of the UN cease-fire resolution that went into effect on Monday.
In a telephone conversation with Prime Minister Ehud Olmert, Annan discussed the Lebanese claims that Israel was in violation of UN Resolution 1701 after IDF troops raided Baalbek overnight Friday - less than a week after the ceasefire went into effect between Israel and Hizbullah.
Less than a week after a cease-fire went into effect, soldiers from the Sayeret Matkal (General Staff Reconnaissance Unit) raided Baalbek deep in Lebanon overnight Friday and, according to the IDF, thwarted the transfer of weapons from Syria to Hizbullah.
An IDF officer, Lt.-Col. Emanuel Morano, 35, from Telamim was killed and two others were wounded in the raid, one seriously and one lightly. Three Hizbullah gunmen were reportedly killed, although the terrorist organization denied suffering any losses.
Defense Minister Amir Peretz said Saturday night that the operation in Baalbek had not violated the UN-brokered cease-fire that went into effect on Monday.
"This was an operation that was meant to prevent the rearming of Hizbullah," Peretz said.
Baalbek is said to be the birthplace of the Iranian- and Syrian-backed Hizbullah and is located in the eastern Bekaa Valley some 100 kilometers north of the Israeli border.
Earlier in the month, the Sayeret Matkal and Shaldag (the air force's elite commando unit) raided the area and took five captives after killing more than 15 gunmen. A high-ranking IDF officer said last week that throughout the previous month of warfare, commandos had carried out dozens of covert operations inside Lebanon.
Lebanon's Prime Minister Fuad Saniora accused Israel of violating the cease-fire and said he would take up the issue with UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan.

The Israeli's lost a Lt Col with 2 wounded and Hiz loses 3. Not a good tradeoff. Article says nothing about what the Jews accomplished for that cost.

A weapons shipment could have been simply bombed in transit. To justify a risky raid, I'd think it was more likely to be a snatch operation - hopefully they got whom they were looking for.

Very proud indeed. Although very sad as well when reports come in indicating the Islamic enemy has some how managed to take the life of one Israel's finest, or in Iraq & Afghanistan when news breaks saying American or Coalition troops have been murdered because of Islamonazis.
Olmert is not what Israel needs. I agree, Bibi would be far better.

Yeah great job, but without full scale operations that take out the sources of the weapons, like Iran and Syria, the hizbullies WILL get rearmed and this whole war will repeat itself. Only worse.
The Israelis need America's help now more then ever. And we better darn well be there when this whole thing boils over. You can be sure the dems will turn their backs on them and support their enemies.
Dems have proven they are no friends of Israel, or America.

"This was an operation that was meant to prevent the rearming of Hizbullah," Peretz said.Well, right, silly. The resolution was never meant to disarm Hezbollah, it was meant to assist terrorists in wiping Israel off the face of the earth.
And the Israelis are supposed to stick to their end of the resolution and and help the terrorists and the UN exterminate them.
My goodness, you would think that the UN was actually out to establish genuine peace in the region or something!

Personally I am not impressed with Netanyahu. My understanding is that Ariel Sharon saw things similarly.
Sharon was one of the Great Masters. Natanyahu is not fit to untie his sandals.
Of course Bibi may have grown up some in recent years but he is not at all brilliant. If Bibi had been in command at The Chinese Farm back in '73 it would have been a strategic and tactical disaster.
The Chinese Farm is still the bread and butter of American Armor doctrine.
The enemy of my enemy is not my friend but is my ally. When the going gets really tough you want allies. Friends who will die with you are few.
Without a strong Israel the war against our unspeakable enemy will be long and uncertain. I sure wish Ari were still alive and healthy.

If Hibullzah builds an orphanage, school, hospital or Baby Milf Factory, you can be certain they build it on top of a bunker. The bodies of women and children are their replacements for armor and reinforced concrete. A heck of a lot cheaper, and they film better for foreign journalists!

When Israel called up the reserves a few days before the cease-fire, some spoke to reporters...these were men in their 'thirties, with wives and children, as opposed to the soldiers that went into Lebanon originally (who were in their 'twenties). Reservists were angry and said they were cannon fodder, fighting for nothing...certainly not victory. Diplomacy was going to be rammed down Israel's throat by those bumbling civilian leaders. Well, they were right and Israel must be hopping mad. I don't see how Olmert can survive as P.M..

[Lebanon's Prime Minister Fuad Saniora accused Israel of violating the cease-fire and said he would take up the issue with UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan.]
Hezbollahland (formally Lebanon) broke the so called UN imposed cease fire when the Hezbollahs not only refused to give up their arms, when France decided to send only 200 troops, when the Islamic terrorist supporting nations Indonesia and Malaysia (as well as the Islamic U.N. supporters) sent only Hezzboland Islamic terrorist groups, including the Hezbollahland army (formally Lebanon army), the truce was broken.
Israel will survive because the Lord Jesus will defend and rule and reign over the whole earth from Israel as He has said in the Holy Scriptures of God. He is a great King.

"srael will survive because the Lord Jesus will defend and rule and reign over the whole earth from Israel" The bible doesn't say that. In fact,Christs rule on earth is nearing it's end. Christs rules from the new kingdom in the third heaven after his second coming.
The proof that this prophecy has been fulfilled can be seen in two momentous events: the unprecedented global warfare that has characterized the Twentieth Century, and the quiet transition from Christian to secular rule across the planet that has accompanied all this warfare.
The millennium of world Christian rule, then, has come and gone and almost no one on earth realizes that such an event has even occurred. Instead of premillennium's and postmillennium's, God has given us a contemporary millennium, and it has come wrapped in the peal of church bells.
The millenium of the Messiah encompasses the duration of Christ's treaty of peace with Babylon(biblical name for the world). It describes the time alloted for salvation on earth before the gate is closed and Jesus returns. We can see that it has lasted almost 2000 years. That means God has doubled the millenium, giving us, in His benevolence, twice what the prophecies stipulated.
That He would do this was foreseen by Joshua.
The duration of Christ's offer on earth is described as the "Day of Atonement". As long as it lasts it represents the light of Christ beaming on earth. It is a "Day of the Lord" a day described in scripture as being 1000 years as far as man is concerned (Ps.90:4). The word "millenium", then, means "Day" of God.
Joshua prophesied that Christ's "Day" would be extended by God. Under the influence of the Holy Spirit, he said that the sun did not set for almost two days (Joshua 10:13-14). That is precisely where we are now. It has been almost 2000 years since Christ walked and preached on earth.
And, true to the prophecy, we can see a "Great Revolt" sweeping God's offer of reconciliation away. The 'Son' is setting; darkness is returning. God's offer is about to be withdrawn. The gate is closing, bringing the 'millenium' of Jesus on earth to an end. That, of course, is what "Persia" is all about, the blistering east winds of prophecy that have now begun to blow in from the Euphrates.
The Millennium of the Messiah

I've said here that the ceasefire is a blessing in disguise because it enables Israel to attack Syria (as well as give the US ammunition to attack Iran in the future) because it bans countries from supplying Hezbollah.
