Claire McCaskill is running against Jim Talent for the United States Senate in Missouri. But, Ms. McCaskill, it seems, has been the subject of a federal investigation into drug use. See the news clips at link.

What amazes me is that this was a news story ran in 2004, yet I live in Missouri and this is the first time I have heard of it.
What is more amazing, and yet possibly linked, is that her first husband was supposedly killed in a drug related incident. E.g. drive by shot to the head while he was sitting in his car.
I believe what we have here is the Missouri media spiking a story which would hurt her political career in Missouri.

From Wikipedia:
"McCaskill was previously married to David Exposito, with whom she had three children. The couple divorced in 1995, barely one year after Exposito was arrested on a Kansas City-area gambling boat for possession of marijuana. The incident and subsequent divorce occurred while McCaskill was Jackson County Prosecutor. Exposito was found murdered in Kansas City, Kansas on December 12, 2005; although no arrests have been made, prosecutors believe that the murder was drug-related."
Amazingly, I missed the fatal incident in '05..
I did however, remember the drug bust in '94..
Talent will have a tough fight on his hands..
McCaskill is a well-known name in MO politics, has been around practically forever.. ( well, it seems like forever..)
Her name recognition, relatively moderate political record, ( she is anti-gun, however ) and association with the Democratic party will all bring her votes..
As a Democrat, she can be pretty much guaranteed places like St. Louis, Kansas City, Springfield, Jefferson City, etc...
I think it will be a close race...

"Springfield and Jefferson City are Republican enclaves."
Absolutely. Other than St. Louis (and certain close-in suburbs that are increasingly black) and KC, there aren't very many Democrat areas in the state. For McCaskill to have a chance, she has to do very well in the historically Democrat rural counties that voted for Bush in 2000 and strongly for Bush in 2004 but that voted for Carnahan in 2000 and for his widow in 2002.

Springfield and Jefferson City are Republican enclaves. Thanks for that info..
I am not familiar with either of those two cities, and simply assumed that they would be dem/lib..
I can still expect Cape Girardeau being dem/lib, right??
Branson?

Cape Girardeau and Branson ? Those are even more Republican than Springfield and Jeff City. Most of them are about 70% GOP with respect to Presidential voting.
There are basically only 3 'Rat/liberal enclaves in the state, and that is K.C. proper, St. Louis, and Columbia/Boone County, which is halfway between them (due to the liberal UM-Columbia) which was only carried by Dubya by an extremely slim margin over Kerry.
These maps will give you an idea of how GOP Missouri is now, and the color schemes are Blue=Republican, Red=Democrat, as they should be.

I believe you are right. I, too, live in Missouri and have never heard about this story either. Something is pretty stinkin' in this GOP state.
To: Drammach
Branson is pretty Conservative/GOP. Our newspaper in Springfield, owned by Gannett is NOT pro-GOP.
To: fieldmarshaldj
Springfield is not as conservative as it used to be. It is becoming more liberal.

I've lived in Springfield all my life (45 years) with the exception of six years of misery in Montgomery Alabama and Atlanta.
You would be pretty hard pressed to find a more conservative part of the country. The 7th congressional district belongs to Roy Blunt. It went for Bob Dole over Clinton with a higher percentage than any other district in the United States.
Springfield is the headquarters of the Assemblies of God (of which I am not a member but I have a lot of respect for). This is, to a great extent one of the reasons for the area's conservatism.
Another is we have never really become "urbanized" due to a relatively small minority presence. We do however have a large number of Vietnamese in the area, many of whom are devout Roman Catholics and of course incredibly hard workers. They tend to stay within their own groups but are very nice people. As conservative blonde could tell you Springfield would be a poorer place indeed without the Vietnamese.
Our Newspaper...The News-Leader (owned by Gannett) does not now and never has reflected the politics of the area. It would be a serious mistake for anybody to believe that they can gage our political philosophy from the Op-Ed pages of that rag.
Now I will grant you that we are not AS conservative as we once were. There is a growing gay population (especially in Joplin). There is a growing hispanic population (especially in Joplin). Branson draws a lot of workers from other parts of the country (many of whom leave fast because wages are nowhere near those of either coast) who tend to vote the commie line.
Still Springfield and southwest Missouri are going to be a strong conservative base for many many years to come. It's just part of who we are.
