Matt’s gone but legacy lives on
The Boston Herald ^ | 08/23/2006 | Howie Carr

As far as the Mass. Turnpike goes, it’s “Fat Matt Who?”

When it comes to turning someone into a non-person, the old Soviet Union had nothing on the modern Pike. All up and down the hack highway, Fat Matt’s name (and it was everywhere) has been either painted over or covered up with a piece of adhesive plastic. You’ll find more Pilgrim hats with Indian arrows through them on the Pike than signs with Fat Matt’s name.

When you’re out, you’re out. Unfortunately, it’s going to be a lot more difficult to pry Fat Matt’s hacks out of the public trough. It may require the Jaws of Life.

Let’s go right to the names, beginning with Denzil C. Drewry, who is grabbing $88,000.01 a year as the “Director of Fast Lane.” Denzil used to be a selectman in Westboro until he retired due to ill health - the voters got sick of him.

By the way, as “Director of Fast Lane” I guess the ex-selectman is the boss of Russell Trottier Jr., the “Superintendent of Fast Lane,” who makes $60,175.61?

Come on down, Worcester City Councilor Joe Petty. Is your brother Dennis a $52,239.11-a-year toll-taker?

“Oh yeah, he’s had that job for 25 years, since I was in high school,” he said.

My e-mailing dime-dropper said, “Dennis has to weigh at least 3 bills.” Any truth to that, councilor?

“Yeah,” said the pol, “he’s about three-something.”

I’m still waiting for a callback from former Worcester Mayor Raymond Mariano. I wanted to ask him whether he is related to summer Pike toll-taker Raymond Mariano Jr. Ditto, the cocktail-happyRep. Paul Kujawski of Webster is not returning my calls. By an amazing coincidence, the summer toll-taking roster includes one “Jonothan” (the Pike’s spelling) Kujawski.

Another nationwide search?

Apparently bout how the folks who run the Mass Pike really, really like to hire their and other politicians' relatives.

Col. David Hunt was on with Howie yesterday. Howie was trying to explain to the Col. what a Moonbat was.

On Beacon Hill this practice is known as swapping hostages. I put your girlfriend on my payroll. You put mine on yours.
Remember, there are three rules in MA politics.
1) Nothing on the level
2) Everything is a deal
3) No deal too small

So basically they're New Orleans without the flood-control problems.

Nope, their flood-control problem is named the Big Dig.

$52,239 salary for a toll-taker? A moron who puts their hand out while you give them a buck?

I'd be willing to bet there are just as many toll takers now as there was before the fast lanes took effect.

You're talking 70's toll rates. Now, a moron puts their hand out and you give them three bucks. And that's just for crossing a crappy bridge.

With all the people using the fastlane transponder, shouldn't these hacks be paid LESS?
