Family urges war support (Kleenex alert)

Family urges war support By Matthew D. LaPlante The Salt Lake Tribune

Many in her country had turned against the war. The mayor of her city was organizing a protest against the president. And the insurgents in Iraq, Amy Galvez feared, were growing bolder by the day. Galvez decided she had heard enough. Hoping her words might persuade those who support the president, the war and the troops in Iraq to assemble in a great demonstration of patriotism and support, Galvez sat at her computer and began to type. "My son, who is a resident of Salt Lake City, is now in Iraq," she wrote in an e-mail to The Salt Lake Tribune on Sunday. "American lives have been lost in this war because the enemy has been emboldened by our own words, actions and lack of support for our own mission."

Galvez was still sitting at her computer when she heard a car door close outside her northwest Salt Lake City home. Peering through the window, she saw two Marines coming up the walk. Adam Galvez, 21, was killed Sunday in Iraq's volatile Al Anbar province in a roadside bomb attack that claimed the life of two other members of his battalion. His death, the 2,607th U.S. fatality confirmed by the Department of Defense, comes as his hometown is bracing for the arrival of President Bush, Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld and Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, who are scheduled to address the national convention of the American Legion next week at the Salt Palace Convention Center.

The city's mayor, Rocky Anderson, has pledged to protest the visit and has invited Cindy Sheehan, a prominent war protester who lost her son in Iraq, to speak at an anti-war demonstration. Inside her home, now adorned by a flag at half-staff, on Tuesday, Amy Galvez said she was more determined than ever to ensure the mission for which her son fought and died is supported back home. "I don't want Cindy Sheehan and Rocky Anderson to be the only voices the world hears," Galvez said Tuesday evening from the living room of her home in northwest Salt Lake City, not far from the airport where Air Force One is scheduled to touch down next week. "I want our voices to be heard. I want the world to know that our troops are wonderful." And, she said, she wants people to know that her son made a choice to serve his country and was proud of his mission in Iraq. The day after Adam Galvez was killed, family members were given a copy of a letter, written to a close friend, in which the Marine confirmed his support for the war in Iraq, Galvez's parents said. That support remained, they said, even after Adam Galvez - trained as a mechanic but often assigned to patrols of Anbar's dangerous streets - stood above the rubble of a U.S. military post struck by a suicide bomber and listened as, one by one, the voices of several fellow Marines fell silent. Galvez told his parents he was suffering from nightmares about the July 29 attack, in which he was injured and four others were killed. Still, the parents said, their son remained confident that his mission was just. And Tony Galvez said he had remained confident his son, the second of three children in the Galvez family, would return home safely. "I had no doubt he was coming home," the grieving father said. "It never crossed my mind that he wouldn't come home." Adam Galvez, who attended West High School and the Horizonte Instruction and Training Center, where he graduated in 2003, was due back from Iraq next month. But Tony Galvez also believed, as his wife did, that the insurgents his son was fighting were growing more dangerous. And he, too, believes that those who question the justness of the war have gone too far. "You can't support the troops but be against the war," he said. "It just doesn't work." mlaplante@sltrib.com

Off topic:

Let me start by saying that "The Path to 9/11" is one of the best, most intelligent, most pro-American miniseries I've ever seen on TV, and conservatives should support it and promote it as vigorously as possible.

This is the first Hollywood production I’ve seen that honestly depicts how the Clinton administration repeatedly bungled the capture of Osama Bin Laden. One astonishing sequence in "The Path to 9/11" shows the CIA and the Northern Alliance surrounding Bin Laden’s house in Afghanistan. They're on the verge of capturing Bin Laden, but they need final approval from the Clinton administration in order to go ahead. They phone Clinton, but he and his senior staff refuse to give authorization for the capture of Bin Laden, for fear of political fall-out if the mission should go wrong and civilians are harmed. National Security Adviser Sandy Berger in essence tells the team in Afghanistan that if they want to capture Bin Laden, they'll have to go ahead and do it on their own without any official authorization. That way, their necks will be on the line - and not his. The astonished CIA agent on the ground in Afghanistan repeatedly asks Berger if this is really what the administration wants. Berger refuses to answer, and then finally just hangs up on the agent. The CIA team and the Northern Alliance, just a few feet from capturing Bin Laden, have to abandon the entire mission. Bin Laden and Al Qaeda shortly thereafter bomb the U.S. embassies in Tanzania and Kenya, killing over 225 men, women, and children, and wounding over 4000. The episode is a perfect example of Clinton-era irresponsibility and incompetence.

This from the father of a fallen warrior. Thank God for heroes like his son. Would that the left would listen, for once.

Thanks for the ping Beachie. Pinging a few more friends.

"You can't support the troops but be against the war," he said. "It just doesn't work."

I've been trying to figure out how you can support the troops but be against the war for quite a while now. I still don't understand how this is possible.
One might almost suspect it's just something they say for PR purposes.

We're organizing with the Freedom Rally organizer and Protest Warrior: Updated Action: Freedom Rally (Utah)

Supposedly the Galvez family will be at the event as well. That brave family sure make the Mayor look like the jerk that he is. It gives me a lot of hope to have such people and young men in our society.

Good luck to you all out there. This (bleep) has got to stop. These Leftists are getting more of our soldiers killed because of their actions, and they don't care. No. Worse than that, I believe that they are happy that more of our soldiers are getting killed.

Anyway, good luck and be careful. The "peace folk" are known to be a violent lot.

I've countered them several times. I know their SOPs.

We've actually moved our event from a direct counter protest to join with a Freedom Rally. In theory, they won't bother us.

Hopefully people will understand that the left chose to put all their resources into protesting 'everything and the kitchen sink' rather than graciously saying "thank you" to the VFW vets and troops visiting Salt Lake.

The mayor et al preferred giving them a cold shoulder, IMO. Frankly the terrorists should send them all a "Thank you" card for the aid and comfort their providing.

Every time the John Murthas and Cindy Sheehans open their mouths, they embolden our enemies, and endanger our troops.

I bet an investigative journalist (whoops, no such thing exists anymore) could find that everytime the news spikes with anti American, anti war comments from our politicians, etc., the attacks in Iraq and Afghanistan increase, become more intense.

Meanwhile, I talked to a Marine yesterday, who very much appreciates the freepers who counter protest the pinko commies at Walter Reed.He also has a very vocal opinion of Murtha.
