Ghost ship discovered in the Italian waters

A ghost ship was discovered in the Italian waters near the shore. Coastguards spotted a double-mast 22-meter sailing ship cruising around near the Porto Rotondo resort but not giving any signs of life.

The vessel had no name and no flags. It also appeared to be free of any crew members, or any living thing at all for that matter. To add to the mystery Italian media sources reported that ships of this kind are not registered anywhere in Sardinia. And besides, no one has seen anything like it in all Italy.

After searching the ship’s cabins coastguards discovered French maps of North African seas, a flag of Luxemburg, Egyptian food leftovers and a wooden tablet in bad Italian that said “Bel’ Amica” (with only one “l” instead of two), which translates into English as “Beautiful Friend.”

The ship’s appearances point to the fact that it is very old but it seems to maintain ideal condition nonetheless. However, there is no indication that anyone had tried to rebuild the ship.

Bel Amica

Police are investigating the mysterious disappearance of the crew of a 66ft schooner found drifting off the coast of Sardinia. Onboard was a half-eaten meal, maps of the Mediterranean, piles of clothes and a punctured tender.

The yacht, which has no name or other markings, was found drifting off the coast of Punta Volpe, an area regarded as a millionaire's playground. A plaque bearing the name Bel Amica was found onboard but police have been unable to trace the name on the Shipping Register.

Coastguards boarded the vessel minutes before it would have been dragged onto rocks, and towed her back to the port of Olbia. It's not known if the yacht was intentionally abandoned, or whether it may have been subject to a piracy attack.

"...A £300,000 schooner has been found floating empty in the Mediterranean-"

It was mine! Mine! Where can I go to claim it? I was eating and listening to the radio, when I heard that Cindy Sheehan was having surgery.

I am 'A Positive', so I went topside to take the dingy into shore. Couldn't get the motor started, so I shot it...., and...took the...other dingy, and went to donate a pint of bile. I knew she'd be running low.

I've sailed offshore almost all my life - Atlantic, Pacific, Med, & Southern Ocean, as well as the Great Lakes. SlowBoat's comment that pirates are usually better armed than anything less than a CG Cutter is true. It's become increasingly difficult to even carry weapons on a yacht that intends to enter foreign ports - well-hidden gun lockers can help, but the weaponry doesn't do you any good offshore unless you have it at the ready at all times.

I've turned down several recent chances to sail the South China Sea because of piracy that has become all to common in that area especially. Fortunately got to sail that area in my bullet-proof younger days.

While there might be some pirates around Santa Barbara their home base of plundering the state is Sacramento.

Sadly lawlessness has taken over the seas much as it has on land. Cruise ships are being fired upon, many boats now travel in a caravan ( I know that's not the right word) for safety and have rifles on board. Right off our own coasts.

That's not your standard Med cruiser!

It looks like a reproduction of a 16th c. galleon - probably English as the forecastle is pretty much a design signature. The rigging is typical of the period too.

I bet somebody was making a film and used "Oh Hell" knots to tie this one to the moorings . . .

Well, sheesh, that's more like it.

A galleon's hardly a schooner anyhow, now is it?

Anything could have happened, from piracy to an accident . . . wonder if they found it with the sails furled and covered like that.

I've heard lots of horror stories from long-range cruisers (pirates less common than food poisoning, multiple people overboard trying to rescue the first MO, and slipped mooring or dragged anchors), there are more vessels drifting around out there than you would think. It's more usual to find them in the Indian Ocean or the western Pacific than the Med or Caribbean, though.

Story of another Mysterious yachting incident from the UK:

The missing yacht 'Ouzo' was a Sailfish 25 similar to this one.

Missing Yacht Dead Men Identified (English Channel, UK - 8/20/06)

Police investigating the disappearance of a yacht in the English Channel have identified two bodies recovered in the search for its three-man crew. The bodies of Rupert Saunders, 36, of Tooting in south London, and Jason Downer, 35, of Broadstairs, Kent, were found in the sea on Wednesday evening.

Mystery surrounds why the yacht and its crew foundered at sea. All three had a zest for life, following testing professional careers, along with a love for sports, including sailing.

Mark Roadaway, of the Solent Coastguard, said: "There are a number of potential scenarios that could have caused this incident. "Whatever it was it was fairly sudden and very traumatic." A massive sea search of the area has failed to find the 27ft (8.2m) boat.

The bodies of Mr Saunders and Mr Downer were located five miles south of St Catherine's Point on the Isle of Wight, and 10 miles west of where Mr Meaby's body was recovered.

"On Sunday, 20 August, they set out to sail from Bembridge on the Isle of Wight to Dartmouth, Devon, a voyage with which they were familiar, having done the same trip before.
