The Guardia Civil has dismantled a foreign network of Albanian-Kosovar burglars who carried out raids on luxury villas. Under “Operation Berbiquí”, officers have made seven arrests of suspects who burgled properties in affluent areas of the Costa del Sol and around Sotogrande (Cadiz). Five of the arrests were made in Torremolinos and Benalmádena, one at Barajas airport, and another at Prat de Lobregat airport in Barcelona.

Guardia Civil officers seized a number of stolen objects and money which are believed to have been taken in more than 150 burglaries.

“Operation Berbiquí” began at the start of the year when officers investigating organised crime in Algeciras detected a considerable increase in the number of burglaries around Gibraltar, and principally in the Sotogrande area, and connected them to the wave of over 150 burglaries that were carried out on the Costa del Sol.

The suspects B.S. and A.P, (31), G.T, (32) and M.P. and P.Q (both 26), all of Albanian-Kosovar origin, were arrested in various apartments in Benalmádena. Police made arrests at the El Prat and Barajas airports as suspects E.L. and E.K. 23 and 26 years respectively, attempted to flee the country on a flight bound for Tirana, the Albanian capital.

According to Guardia Civil officers, the suspects observed the properties in which they were to carry out the burglaries, as well as observing the tenants in order to make a note of their daily routines.

Once they had decided on the day to carry out the crime they approached the properties between 12 midnight and six in the morning, stealing small objects that could easily be carried in backpacks or pockets such as jewellery, watches, mobile phones and money.

Officers believe that some of the stolen objects were sold and others were sent away in the post. Other items were sent by to Albania by lorry.

To identify stolen items contact the Algeciras Guardia Civil on 956587610 ext.239.
