California Lawmakers to Allow Condoms in Prisons

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - California lawmakers passed a bill on Thursday to permit condom distribution in the state's prisons, where the HIV infection rate is eight times higher than on the streets of Los Angeles.

I guess this is a good thing, since the prison systems seem unable or unwilling to stop homosexual rape in there.

So not only are we feeding them housing them and giving them tv.. but also paying for expensive AIDS treatment.

Works for me. If they won't do anything about it, we ought to provide solitary cells so prisoners could sleep without fear of rape. It would be expensive, but hey, the construction trades will need work as housing slows down.

"They don't screw you in prison for the sex, they do to see that look on your face."

Condoms are meaningless in that milieu.

Sorry to say this to the immigration-phobes, but just like our current immigration policy. Rules, Schmools, who follows them anyway.

This is only worthwhile if they can mandate their use. It's a difficult circumstance... male-on-male rape and forced oral copulation is a problem in prisons. Many of the CA prison population are from an ethnic group known to have a cultural problem with using condoms, considering them non-masculine.

Those being handed out, If they aren't pre-lubricated, are pretty much worthless.

If this can reduce health care costs for prisoners than it's a move worth attempting.
