CHICAGO -- A Pulitzer Prize-winning foreign correspondent for the Chicago Tribune was charged in a Sudanese court Saturday with espionage and other crimes.

Paul Salopek, 44, was charged in a 40-minute hearing with espionage, passing information illegally and writing "false news," the Tribune reported on its Web site. His driver and interpreter, both Chadian nationals, faced the same charges.

"He had no agenda other than to fairly and accurately report on the region," Johns said.

Islamics running the country don't want the truth of what they're doing to get out?

The NYT should be charged with espionage in this country. What's the hold up?

He also entered the country without a visa. There's more at the Chicago Tribune site...

Salopek, who has extensive experience reporting from Africa, had been traveling in Chad, near the Sudanese border. When arrested, Salopek was carrying two U.S. passports--a legal practice, common among journalists and other frequent travelers who require multiple visas--and satellite maps of the conflict zone in Darfur, printed from public Web sites. According to sources, Sudanese officials view the passports and maps as evidence of espionage.

Born in California raised in Mexico. That would make him a US citizen correct?

In times of universal deception, telling the truth is a revolutionary act.

That's the best I can recollect something George Orwell wrote.

How would I qualify for more than one passport?

Is it not the case that a person would be carrying two passports to be passing as not American, for instance? Would the privileged class call another government and ask for one openly, or would they use forged documents?

And then I suppose that if the privileged type crossed the fellows that gave him his second passport, he would have the problem that he is in now.

If you misplace your passport, get a replacement & then find your old one, you'd have two. I think having more than one is problematic, if they have any false information on them. If you were going to an area where a group like Hezbollah is gonna take your passport from you, cuz you're a reporter, having a second one might be a smart move.

One for travel to Israel and one to travel in muslim countries where they won't let you in with an Israeli visa in your passport. They probably found the one with the Israeli stamp, and thus consider him a 'Zionist spy'.

I'm going to side with the msm against TROP on this one.

I now recall that that is the basis for the multi-passport scenario. The reporter's bio looks like he's probably a truth teller. This one might be difficult.

Late 70s, I knew industry people in foreign military sales that had two US passports. One for Arab countrues and one for others. You could get into trouble in Arab countries if they saw visas from certain other countries in your passport. Solution: two passports.

Yep & yep. Even if he is a left wing tool, he's doing a tough job, in a rough neighborhood. Much as I despise some of the outrageous crap by many so called "journalists", this kind of crap is just wrong.

Certainly not. I'm saying, there *may* not be much that our State Department can do for him & odds are, he knew that going in. He was there working & wasn't just on a pleasure tour. I'm sure we're doing everything we can for the guy, which is appropriate.
