Giuliani looks strong in Iowa

1. Giuliani Leads McCain in Iowa

Former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani has pulled well ahead of Sen. John McCain among Iowa Republicans likely to take part in the state’s early caucuses, a new poll reveals.

In the survey by Victory Enterprises, Giuliani received support from 30 percent of Republicans expecting to attend the 2008 caucuses, which are scheduled to launch the 2008 Republican presidential nominating cycle.

McCain was second at 17.3 percent.

A similar Victory Enterprises survey a year ago had Giuliani and the senator from Arizona tied at 21.7 percent.

Giuliani is viewed as favorable by two-thirds of those surveyed, the highest rating among the eight Republicans listed as potential candidates.

But two-thirds said they would be unlikely to support a candidate whose position on abortion differed from theirs, a potential problem for Giuliani, who supports abortion rights.

Seventy percent of the poll's respondents identified themselves as "pro-life."

In the new poll, about 29 percent of the 400 surveyed said they were undecided about whom they would support.

“The poll shows single-digit support for the remainder of the large field of prospective GOP candidates, all of whom have made multiple visits to Iowa this year,” the Des Moines Register reported.

Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist of Tennessee received 6.5 percent, followed by Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney with 4.5 percent, Virginia Sen. George Allen with 3.5 percent, New York Gov. George Pataki with 3.3 percent, and Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee and Kansas Sen. Sam Brownback each with 2.5 percent.

Today, my preference for a Republican ticket is Guiliani for President and Rice for VP.

I'd like to hear responses. I think Rudy is tough enough to handle corruption and a very hostile press. Rice would be good for the party, and is brighter than most of the other usual suspects in Congress.

I think most Republicans see Sen. McCain for what he really is; a RINO with a chip on his shoulder because the President buried him in the primaries. If he gets the GOP nomination for President God help us. It will be a victory for the Democrats rather than the Republicans.

Opinion polls now are completely irrelevent and based soley on name reconition. Clinton didn't lead in any poll about the democratic primary back in August 1990.

My selection:

Rudy at the top of the ticket.

A strong, proven conservative for VP, that would balance Rudy's moderate (liberal) social views, i.e. George Allen or Rick Santorum.

"I think most Republicans see Sen. McCain for what he really is; a RINO..."

And what is Rudolph Giuliani? Chuck Hagel? There are more RINOs who need to be stopped in the primary aside from the famous backstabber, John McCain.

Plus he's very articulate. As much as I like Bush, the ability to deftly articulate your policies is a great skill to have, and Bush really doesn't have it.

I am not crazy about Guiliani on some issues, but right now he's the best we've got.

BTW... in today's paper, Garrison Keilor has a column where he implores the 9/11 audio tapes of calls made from the WTC be released. I agree... But in the same column he implies that Guiliani was a coward that day on September 11th, and only started looking tough when he thought he could gain political capital. This on the surface makes no sense as he was no longer eligible to run. Maybe some of you Nyers could expand?

In so many ways is Keilor wrong on these statements. Everything I've read, Rudy really came to life during those critical hours. (Dennis Smith's book, Report From Ground Zero verifies that.)

The libs are already on the attack.

Another reason I stopped listening to A Prairie Home Companion a long time ago.

My two cents is that I hope the strongest candidate based on national security is elected. At this point in the game, I am absolutely fine with voting for a moderate or social liberal as long as the next President prosecutes this war aggressively.

All the other issues like abortion, balancing the budget (etc) mean nothing if we are all dead.

I'm with you there. If we're going to proceed with the war on terror, we'll need someone who can articulate the need for pressing on. The other potential candidates haven't distinguished themselves on this issue.

I am not crazy about Guiliani on some issues, but right now he's the best we've got.

He isn't the best we have. Not by a long shot.

George W. Bush's greatest potential success to date in terms of its lasting effect on the health of this country is his SCOTUS appointments. Pro-gay, pro-abortion, anti-fanily, anti-Second Amendment Giuliani would undo it all with two and perhaps three SCOTUS picks.

No thanks. I care too much about my children and grandchildren to be panicked into sacrificing their long terms futures by the "Giuliani is our only hope" gambit.

Putting aside the merits pro or con Guiliani, I think the reason for his strong showing in many polls indicates that people are craving someone perceived as a "national security" provider and a "law-and-order" leader.

Rightly or wrongly, Rudy is thought by many millions to be that kind of guy.

My point is that I think this nervousness and craving by the populace bodes very well for the Republicans in the next election.

Very well, indeed.

In so many ways is Keilor wrong on these statements.

An example of "The Big Lie." Leftists repeat the same lie often enough, loud enough, have it echo within the MSM enough times, and it starts to stick as "truth" in the mushy consciousness of the great unwashed masses. The left will never win an election based upon the unvarnished truth. Their only hope is to create a "new truth" by getting broad acceptance of lies.

Why don't we wait and see what Giuliani's philosophy is on judicial appointments. He could effectively neutralize doubts about his position on abortion, guns, gays, whatever, if he were to come out in favor of strong originalists to the courts. In fact, if he were to make this a key point in his campaign, he'd sew up the base.

We're at war with evil, and I don't just mean the terrorists. I mean the vile leftists who have taken over the Democrat Party. Crushing the Democrats not only transcends individual issues, but ideology as well. We'll see the usual bickering over individuals' pet single issues, but the over-arching issue of the need to grind the Democrats into powder is what the '08 election will be about.

I'm afraid that would all but guarantee a Democrat victory. Millions of pro-life, pro-family evangelicals and Catholics would refuse to vote for Guiliani (I count myself among them.) I know next to nothing about Rice's stands on domestic issues, so it is impossible for me to judge one way or the other. While obviously competent, she is not the best public speaker I've ever seen.
