MCCAIN STATEMENT ON WAR IN IRAQ
For Immediate Release
Friday, Aug 25, 2006

Washington, D.C. – Today, U.S. Senator John McCain released the following statement on the war in Iraq:

“I agreed with the President’s difficult decision to go to war in Iraq. I remain fully supportive of his determination not to leave Iraq until the freely elected government of that country and its armed forces are able to defend their country from foreign and domestic enemies intent on thwarting the will of the Iraqi people to create a civil society in which the rights and security of all Iraqis are protected.

“I have often emphasized the importance of leveling with the American people about the high costs and many difficulties of the mission, the potentially calamitous consequences of failure and the many benefits of success, as the President has also frequently stressed. But I have never intended my concern that the American public be fully informed about the conduct and consequences of the war to indicate any lessening of my support for our mission there. On the contrary, I view a candid, informed public discussion of the war as critical to sustaining popular support for the war and, thus, indispensable to ensuring the ultimate success of our mission.

And I commend the President for his public statements offering Americans an honest assessment of the progress we have made in Iraq and the challenges that still confront us there, and, of course, for his determination to defend American security and international peace and stability by succeeding in this arduous and costly enterprise.”

As soon as the President's approaval ratings go up again, expect RINOs like this idiot to once again be a turd in the punchbowl, and criticize the President.

I called his office last week furious over his comments about the failure of Iraq and his criticism that the President "sugar coated" the war. I let them know I vote. I vote in primaries. I went to a special election a few weeks ago just to vote in a Republican runoff for Agriculture Commissioner. I would under no circumstances vote for McCain if he was planning on running in 2008.

I must not have been the only person to call last week.

McCain has been a steadfast supporter of the War on Terror. As much as I may disagree with him on some issues, he's a decent man whom I'll certainly consider supporting for the GOP Presidential nomination.

McCrazy is a flip flop idiot, and Lindsey is busy kissing his ass, maybe that's what is distracting him.

Too little, too late, Senator. Go back to playing in the Amnesty sandbox with Sen. Kennedy.

If "backstabbing" means saying one thing to someone, then doing another thing that causes great harm, then I can't think of a single instance of him backstabbing anyone. He's always pretty much done the things he said he would do.

I guess it's become chic here to trash McCain, and goodness knows I've disagreed with him on several issues, but when I think of people I trust to run this nation during time of war, he's among a small number at the top of the list.

I called his office last week furious over his comments about the failure of Iraq and his criticism that the President "sugar coated" the war.

How did he criticize? Everything said was the truth ("Last throes"--Cheney; "Mission Accomplished"--Bush). The Bush-McCain difference is that McCain has been a staunch believer in the Powell doctrine of "overwhelming force" rather than the Bush position of Rumsfeld's "limited presence and coalition". "Limited Presence" isn't working; the Iraqi's still realize there is an occupation led by the U.S. so it makes no sense not to have the largest force possible to do the job--in such a way we could seize and hold such places as Al An bar province (where battle deaths are now occurring), observe more areas for IED implantation, and hold the country more securely until it is prepared to take over--instead, now, we have just enough troops to barely do the job of search and destroy.

No flips nor flops, but a steady believer in the doctrine of "overwhelming force" in war. I suppose he learned that, as many of us did, ON THE GROUND or ON THE RIVERS of Vietnam (opposite of Rumsfeld's doctrine of Limited Presence which didn't work there and won't work now). Of course, I see by your profile that you were in the "Chair Force" so why should I expect you to understand.

I'm wondering whether the emails I sent, along with all the other emails from the multitude of Patriotic Americans, had any impact on McCain's seeming retraction from his earlier comments?

Not my recollection of history. I ask anyone to post a quote which supports McCain's statement that the Bush administration mislead Americans into believing the conflict would be “some kind of day at the beach.”

"Iraq can be an example of peace and prosperity and freedom to the entire Middle East. (Applause.) It’ll be a hard journey, but at every step of the way, Iraq will have a steady friend in the American people.”

President Bush, April 28, 2003

”We have difficult work to do in Iraq. We're bringing order to parts of that country that remain dangerous. We're pursuing and finding leaders of the old regime, who will be held to account for their crimes… The transition from dictatorship to democracy will take time, but it is worth every effort. Our coalition will stay until our work is done. Then we will leave, and we will leave behind a free Iraq.”

President Bush, May 1, 2003

It is pretty clear that the coalition can win in Afghanistan and Iraq in one way or another, but it will be a long, hard slog.

Secretary Rumsfeld, October 16, 2003

So in other words you are following the John Kerry philopsphy of being on all sides of the issue hm Senator McInsane?

Note to Inside the Beltway Liars. The President has never been any less then 100% candide about the cost and difficulty of this war. That some of you doffuses in the US Senate kidded yourself that it would NOT be as tough as President Bush said is YOUR problem. Trying to blame him for your short sightedness in order to pander to the Junk Media DNC proganda machine is stupid. All this does is anger the Republican base and excite your political foes. When are the terminally stupid RINOS go to learn this simple political lesson?
