Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger on Monday tapped an Oakland high school teacher and government ethics advocate for the state teachers' retirement board.
Peter Reinke, a third-generation teacher, will join the 12-member board of the influential California State Teachers' Retirement System, filling the post vacated by controversial Schwarzenegger adviser David Crane.
Under fire by teachers' groups and labor unions, Crane was ousted last June by Senate Democrats who said the governor's special adviser for jobs and economic growth was not the right fit for the post at the $142 billion fund. Crane came under criticism for his refusal to oppose a legislative proposal to overhaul traditional public pension plans. In making another appointment to the CalSTRS board, Schwarzenegger reiterated the importance of keeping the fund "focused on maximizing risk-adjusted returns and minimizing administrative costs," an issue often raised by Crane during his year at the nation's second largest public pension fund.
Reinke's "experience at Common Cause will help STRS develop stringent and practical ethics reform," the governor said in a statement.
An Oakland resident, the 33-year-old Reinke has served the past three years as director of civic purpose at Head Royce School, an academic program for at-risk youth co-founded by leaders of the Oakland Teachers Association and former Oakland Mayor Elihu Harris. From 1997 to 2003, he was director of finance and teacher training for the school's Heads Up Alliance, an enrichment program for minority youth.
Reinke, a Democrat, has a bachelor's degree in history from Brown University. In 2000, he received an award for excellence in high school teaching from the University of San Diego. Three years ago, Oakland Mayor Jerry Brown recognized him for his advocacy work for low-income, at-risk youth.

Reinke's experience also includes a stint working with U.S. Sen. John Chafee of Rhode Island.
