SACRAMENTO Students who came to the country illegally could apply for state financial aid when they attend California colleges and universities under legislation approved Tuesday by the Assembly in a party-line vote. Supporters said immigrant children who have graduated and completed at least three years of high school in California should not be penalized for their parents' decision to bring them to the U.S. illegally.
It is one small measure to help these kids that are working their butts off to live the American dream, said Assemblyman Hector De La Torre, D-South Gate. The bill would build upon existing state law that allows the same group of students to qualify for in-state tuition at California public schools and community colleges based on high school attendance, rather than U.S. citizenship or state residency.
Critics said offering financial aid to illegal immigrants would short-change needy American students already competing for a small pot of money.
We're talking about limited resources here, said Assemblyman Chuck DeVore, R-Irvine. There's only so much that can go around. It's a slap in the face to people who have followed the rules.
Lawmakers approved SB160 by a 43-27 vote, with no Republicans supporting it, and sent it to the Senate for final approval. Aides to Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger said he had taken no position on the bill.
This is so infuriating!! My kids couldn't EVEN get FREE financial help from the state or govt. cause according to them our pitiful income was sky high! I can't believe those hard working taxpayer Cali folk are willing to bent over and get s****ed BIG time!
"immigrant children who have graduated and completed at least three years of high school in California should not be penalized for their parents' decision to bring them to the U.S. illegally."
No, not at all. WE should be penalized. And it shall be made so, apparently.
You beat me. My thought is always......and I should be penalized? I didn't make the dam decision to bring them here.
"Lawmakers approved SB160 by a 43-27 vote, with no Republicans supporting it, "
wow. we're really outnumbered then. or did people just not vote ?
Bend over California!
The Party of Treason has ZERO fear of those outraged by Illegal Immigration.
Uh, yes they should. Additionally, they should be deported along with their parents.
BOHICA I think this word originated in a song by Hank Williams Jr.
Bend Over Here It Comes Again
Everything I have seen indicates that such programs are not popular with the majority of voters, yet those voters keep electing these socialists.
ping
California is probably about 57/43 Dem to GOP, and that, coupled with gerrymandering, gives the Dems a huge majority in the state legislature.
B) If they get college degrees, then what? It's still illegal to hire them, and employers with jobs requiring a degree are going to be a lot more particular about making sure they're legal residents of the US before hiring them. Their college education will be a waste of state resources.
Also in California, possessing child porn is a misdemeanor. Nancy Grace was outraged.
I agree. If mexicans rob a bank in the U.S. and give the money to their kids, the police will take away the stolen money from the kids. If mexicans illegally enter the U.S. in order to give U.S. citizenship to their kids, that also should be taken away as the fruit of the crime. Stealing money and stealing citizenship is different only in that the victims are different: the bank is robbed of money and citizen taxpayers are robbed of services and money for freebies for the anchor invaders.
You make a good argument!
I want to know how they will be able to avoid committing fraud when using phony identification while applying for the college loan?
what loan???
We're NOT willing - this is done by panderers in the state government against our will. Our demands against freebies for illegals are completely ignored by our "lawmakers". They are bought and paid for by the open borders lobby.
