Mexico promises corrupt-cop roundup

MEXICO CITY -- Mexico's attorney general said the arrest a group of corrupt cops along the border with California is imminent.

Daniel Cabeza de Vaca told a Mexico City news conference today the cops protected a Tijuana cartel, the Arellano Felix gang, which smuggled tons of pot, cocaine and meth into the United States.

Two were already arrested Saturday and charged with taking bribes to protect the gang. The attorney general said they worked at the Rosarito police department just over the border from San Diego border.

The two are accused of decapitating three of their fellow officers.

The news follows an investigation into a network of cops who covered up for the gang. Their leader, Javier Arellano Felix, is awaiting trial in the U.S. The drug kingpin was captured last week fishing off the coast of Mexico.

Arellano is being held in San Diego where he has pleaded innocent to charges that could land him in jail for 40 years.

The gang was a drug powerhouse in the 1980s and by the late 1990s was believed to be the most powerful cartel in Mexico. But its influence has waned lately as a new generation of gangsters has risen to prominence.

Daniel Cabeza de Vaca

Daniel Cow's Head? Sounds like ol' Daniel may end up with one in his bed....

Seriously, though, I wish them all the luck in the world rolling up the cartels. Truly evil people.

Used to party in Mexico and always was able to settle minor disputes with $10 to $20.00.

If they round up all of the corrupt cops, they won't have any police left in the country!

That's quite generalization, Mr. Cowboy. So all Mexican cops are corrupt?? Are Mexican-American cops corrupt? What exactly is the point you are trying to make?

Mexican insurance companies tell you if you get pulled over in Mexico, just press your driver's license against the window.

Why?

Cuz if you HAND it to him, in every case he'll simply take it, or hold it hostage for some bribe.

This is not idle tourist talk --this is a Mexican company with lots of experience explaining this...

They arrested the cops for being too blatant. My guess is la mordida "the bite" - will continue more discreetly.

That will be a big job for sure. Of course, I don't believe a word of it. The gov't is so corrupt there.

Without an extra payment under the table, nothing gets done in Mexico. The system forces even the most ethical person to be complicit in offering bribes. Otherwise one can expect to wait forever for the bureaucracy to fulfill its responsibility.

As one guy used to post when he saw blatantly insane things:

I like cheese. Do you like cheese? I like putting it on crackers.

Just pointing out that this is an obvious lie from a compromised government who's effectively ceded control of it's border regions to drug cartels. Thousands of Mexican military personnel marching to Dons' orders can't be wrong.

If that's not reason enough for immediate construction of effective barriers perhaps the lust of the drug gangs for the terrorist's deep wallet might be an incentive. Only a fool would believe scum who'd machete children to death over money would respect America's security.
