Why this immigrant rights march is brought to you by Miller

By Oscar Avila Tribune staff reporter

September 1, 2006

Marchers had to duck into fast-food restaurants for water when they first took to Chicago's streets in support of illegal immigrants five months ago. At the next two marches, family-owned grocery stores offered free bottled water from trucks emblazoned with their names.

This time, as demonstrators march from Chinatown to House Speaker Dennis Hastert's (R-Ill.) Batavia office this weekend, they will have Miller Brewing Co., as a sponsor. The brewer has paid more than $30,000 for a planning convention, materials and newspaper ads publicizing the event.

The support of a major corporation for a controversial political cause shows how fierce the competition has become to woo the growing market of Latino consumers....

Why? Because they'll make money doing so and it's great PR as most of this country doesn't care enough about illegals invading. I read on F-R recently that the average household shells out about $750 in taxes for expenses directly related to illegals. When that number goes dramatically up and people understand why, then, perhaps, this country won't find it so funny.

For now, blaming Miller for marketing their beer is like blaming the illegals for coming here for jobs: a waste of time.

I always thought that Miller beer tasted like pig piss anyway. Give me a good German wheat beer, or a Belgian white, or if all else fails, a good 'ol American Rolling Rock and then we can talk.

Miller is marketing anarchy, IMHO.

Too bad. We USED to buy Miller beer. My last 12 pack of longnecks was purchased yesterday.

Let the illegals buy it and keep that company going.

Good. Life is too short for cheap beer. Might I suggest Fat Tire. Hmmm.

It would be a great day in America if enough people actually stopped buying Miller products and let it be known why. Even if it was just for a year and the bottom line at Miller was truly hurt.

I don't want to sound like a drunkard, but Mr. MD and I bought Miller because we drank so much beer, we needed a cheap one. That is gonna change real quick!

I'll look for Fat Tire. A friend just suggested Budweiser Select in the bottle..what about that-still cheap?

Our six pack a day habit will hardly affect Miller at all, I'm sure. But due to personal principles, MY MONEY won't go to support anarchy. I am e-mailing Miller with this sentiment.

It would be nice to see a boycott on the scale of French Whine, but some people will put a cold one above their country. That is their business, I guess.

I was just talkin about Miller with a friend yesterday. We live near Milwaukee and think it is some of the crappiest beer made. And over the years, the quality has gone down.

I joke that the Milwaukee sewage overflows that end up in Lake Michigan are re-captured to produce Miller Beer.

I just logged my complaint on Miller's Website. Let's see how they respond.
