They have to do something to counter their own commercials urging smokers to quit or never start.

Lower the nicotine in a cigarette and you will have people smoking more cigarettes to get their nicotine level up to what they require. If you want to have them smoke less....really increase the nicotine. You'll get vomit though.

I heard this last night on the evening news, but I don't get why non-smokers would even care??
It doesn't affect them; they don't smoke!
Must be something else, like, they're a bunch of busy-bodies who can't stand to stay out of other people's business!

It seems the tobacco companies are just begging for more lawsuits.

In my state there IS a limit on the amount of alcohol in booze. It's illegal to sell the 190 proof "grain" alcohol.

"It seems the tobacco companies are just begging for more lawsuits."As soon as I saw the headline, I knew there was a boatload of ambulance-chasers readying a Class Action assault, AGAIN.....
No surprises here.......just move along.

There is a brand by Vector called Quest, that offers three different levels of nicotine, including an almost zero percent variety.
Funny thing is, Quest cigarettes are only legally available in about a dozen states or so.

Make it illegal. Let the blackmarket have the money, defund the government, and if they need to, they can raise taxes on nonsmokers. It's about time nonsmokers started paying their fair share.

Do smokers realize how nasty they smell? I can't understand why someone would pay money to get high and smell like $hit. Instead of increasing nicotine levels why can't the cigarette companies make some that leave the smoker smelling like flowers or something nice?

Lots of things smell bad, and I'm ready to support making them all illegal and charging nonsmokers for the enforcement costs.

Welcome to Free Republic. I don't know what I have to do with this thread but, as a onetime smoker of 5 packs a day, and tobacco free for more than 7 years now, I agree with your post. The article seems to play into the ever popular but false theory that we are unable to break bad habits by the exercise of will power alone.
Lower nicotine content, higher nicotine content, any nicotine content: all have one thing in common: they help maintain the nicotine habit. Cold turkey (one hour at a time, then one day, then one week, then one month, then one year, then forever) and gallons of water to flush your system and keep it clean will do more (at absolutely no expense and a terrific savings from $3-4/pack) than any low nicotine crutch (cigarettes, gum, patches or whatever) to break the habit. Why prolong the addiction and the agony? Quit cold.
