The fallout from an opinion piece published in Berkeley's twice-weekly community newspaper has mushroomed well beyond the confines of the nation's first designated Nuclear-Free Zone.
And while it is not unusual for the Berkeley Daily Planet's executive editor and owner Becky O'Malley to publish controversial, far-flung opinion pieces and wacko reader responses, the decision to run a commentary headlined "Zionist Crimes in Lebanon" is being questioned by scores of critics.
The article, which appeared as commentary on the opinion pages of the newspaper's Aug. 8 edition, was more an attack on Jewish people than a logical argument against Israel's massive military response to the continuing rocket attacks from Hezbollah forces in Lebanon.
After reducing mainstream America's interests to stories about same-sex marriage and actor Mel Gibson's drunken driving arrest, author Kurosh Arianpour launched a historical assault against Jews.
"Let us go back to 539 B.C., when Cyrus the Great, King of Persia, went to Babylonia and liberated Jews. One can ask why Jews were enslaved by Babylonians. Also, one can ask why Jews had problems with Egyptians, with Jesus, with Europeans, and in modern times with Germans?" wrote Arianpour, a former Berkeley resident who is a student in India.
The newspaper's critics, and there are plenty of them, aren't too interested in Arianpour's historical view.
What more than two dozen rabbis and Jewish community groups and scores of Bay Area residents really want to know is why in the heck would the paper print such an inflammatory, hateful piece in a newspaper that makes its mark with stories about Berkeley land-use and City Hall politics? It's a reasonable question.
The Anti-Defamation League's Northern California chapter sent O'Malley a letter demanding a public apology for the article. It carries the signatures of more than a half-dozen elected officials from the East

The Islam-o-nazis have them on the list...
The connection between the Left, the old anti-semitism and the new is well presented and documented here:

Generally, anti-Semites aren't against Jews. That is a symptom.
What they are really against is God. It's that simple.
It is critical to remember that whatever the left does has its roots in the lust for global, French-style socialism - - the kind of secular welfare state socialism that the Democrats want to bring to America. The linear "thinking" among the left goes like this:
1. Capitalism, self-reliance, individual liberty and personal responsibility are perceived as Republican values.
2. Republicans control all branches of government in America and therefore whatever Republicans do must be belittled, mocked, smeared, and spun in the public mind as "bad". ("Right" and "wrong" have nothing to do with anything - - the Republicans must be defeated in order to move the global socialist agenda forward.)
3. Bush and the Republican have undertaken a war against terror, so (see #3 above) this effort must be belittled, mocked, smeared, and spun in the public mind as "bad". (Silently, the left would love for Bush's America to lose the war on terror outright, but in lieu of a humiliating defeat on the field of battle the left would be satisfied just to see Bush forced to retreat with his tail between his legs.)
4. Israel is now engaged in it's own high profile war against terror and is therefore seen by the left ("the left" includes the Democrats, the European global socialists, the liberal "mainstream" newsrooms of the NY Times, the networks, Reuters, AP, and most of the European press) as an ally of Bush and the Republicans. That is, Israel's aggressive military action adds credibility to Bush's aggressive military action and seriously damages the efforts of the left to paint Bush as a "go-it-alone" cowboy who is "out of touch", etc. The war on terror is for real and Israel has reminded the public of that reality.
5. Since Israel is perceived as an ally of Bush - - fighting side-by-side with Bush against terrorists - - its own effort must now also be belittled, mocked, smeared, and spun in the public mind as "bad". Again, since the Republicans must be defeated in order to move the socialist agenda forward, anybody who stands with Bush must go down with him.
This completes the circle.
And that is why the Berkeley Daily Planet - - along with the rest of the liberal "mainstream" newsrooms from the NY Timesa and the the networks to Reuters, AP, and most of the European press - - hates Israel and why the Planet gave not a second thought to publishing an anti-semitic article.
Because they're freaking moonbats, that's why. What do you expect from a paper called the Daily Planet?
Why? Because there is no difference between todays Liberals and the Brownshirts of the 30's.
Stunning. The Left is turning into a bunch of skinheads also. A "turn the ovens on" mentality. I don't live there, and those people would be running down the street away from me if they came near here.
Excellent link. T'anks.
Anyone want to wager that if I were to submit for publication my views on that gutter religion (and stating it thus) Islam, and include my opinions (even if exagerated) that ALL Muzzies are terror-bent; that Mooooohamend was a murdering, pedophile, racist thug; and the world would be a better place if they were eradicated, (even if I signed my real name and include my real address and phone number) that my "Opinion" would not be published?
No takers? Didn't think so.
F'n, radical, socialist, hypocritical, b*tch!!!
...because liberalism is a mental disorder!
What I can't understand is why DEMOcrats enjoy the majority support and allegiance of American Jews. It just doesn't compute.
Ater pandering to the homosexual lobby, and the anti-Christian lobby, publishing Jew-hatred from a moslem skank seems like a natural progression.
How can some people survive for years with their heads buried so deeply in the sand?
Berkeley is not part of the United States. If there is a terrorist attack on Berserkley, perhaps FEMA should tell Berserkley "You're on your own".
Spelling correction - it should be Berserkeleystan :)
Because the left hates Jews.
Look at the URL. The article was gotten to as a result of a search for articles containing the word "Jewish". The search term(s) that got you to that article get bolded
Ohhhh. Thanks. It did occur to me that it looked like a highlighted search term, but I didn't think to check out the URL.
The Left has decided that Muslims are more valuable than Jews. They can get more money from the Sauds.
Let there be no doubt that liberals would loading us all into cattle cars right now if they had the power to do it.
Because the jews in Berkeley hate the jews in Berkeley.
I spend many many hours on Telegraph - Cody's and Shakespeare bookstores and Shambala.
Cody's is there but different. No longer do they carry 500 German titles or 100 Spanish titles or 50 Russian titles.
They still have an enormous selection, but clearly it is communist/socialist. The old selections of quality balance are long gone.
The jewish athetist aristocrats are the jews biggest enemies and Berkeley is their home.
Cut deal with North Korea - they can test their nuke rockets if they target Berkeley.
