Annan: Sanctions will not solve Iran nuclear issue By News Agencies and Haaretz Service

United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan met on Saturday with Iranian Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki in Tehran. Annan is expected to press Iran to help shore up the fragile cease-fire between Israel and Hezbollah, but diplomats say the talks will also cover Iran's nuclear standoff with the West.

Annan said in a newspaper interview before arriving that he hoped for a diplomatic solution that would "avoid another conflict in a region already subjected to a great stress at this moment."

Asked about indications that the United States wants to move to sanctions, he told the French daily Le Monde, "I do not believe that sanctions are the solution to all problems."

Just going by the headline, I have to agree with the crazy commie bastard. Sanctions won't work. Only a full military assault will do.

Sanctions are a joke. The United States should bomb Iran's nuclear development sites "yesterday", and keep bombing them until they are pulverized. To drive the message home, we should also bomb Iran's oil wells, to destroy Iran's economy. That's the way to fight a terrorist state, not by negotiations, not by "diplomacy", not by economic "sanctions"; that's all BS.

He gets the "Neville Chamberlain Award" for being completely clueless and/or just completely corrupt, but personally I'm thinking both at the same time. Meanwhile, Condi follows the lead of this arse-bite organization.

The problem of course for Annan to make this statement is that it undercuts any possibility of diplomatic/economic pressure to get Iran to comply. Coming from the Secretary General of the United Nations the Security Council has been undermined. The result is either accept Iran's nuclear armament program or military action. Very treacherous position for the head of the UN to take

Annan just wants to see how long he can get away with an Iranian bribery scam. So far he's gotten away with his previous bribe taking.

Did Kofi learn shakedowns from Jesse Jackson or the other way around?

LE$VEL the nation
of hate spewing sand trash
and you will get rid of 50% of the fools who want to act on death to america, death to israel and hail to the 7th century.

this place is the epicenter of the antichrist
and barnacles frustrating mans progress on this planet.

Clean up this nation and a few of its neighbors and I am sure the "brave " fools seeking 72 year old virgins will stay home and mind their goats.

With their rhetoric combined with the wests "tolerence" which they perceive as weakness,,, the marginals are poking their heads up and acting on dreams. Level the sand, and they will relate cause and effect. Consequence.

A nuclear Iran spells the end of the west, the end of progress, and all of us subserviant to the antichrist.

screw that!

That depends. The west has never fully executed sanctions. If we did, iran would be toast in less than a month.

I agree. Sanctions aren't the solution. Killing the midget-nutball that runs the place and all his pals is the solution.

I agree, sanctions have rarely, if ever, worked.

However I don't think it will take a full military assault, with ground invasion. A bunch of Precision Guided bombs, including the big new bunker busters and thermobaric bombs as needed, should be able to do the job. That includes pounding the snot out of any Revolutionary Guards barracks, ports, and fields. That should get their boots off the necks of the people, who will take care of any of the Angry Ayatollahs that the bombs miss.

Only the very deeply buried facilities are problematic. If necessary those would have be taken out with penetrating nukes, or special forces assaults.

Neither China nor Russia are part of "the West". Sanction would be incomplete, very incomplete. They would/will fail.

Annan isn't interested in sanctions against Iran, and he DEFINITELY would not support military action.

But he is willing to harshly criticize Israel for firing back when fired upon.

Not enough bad stuff can happen to him.

If that's the case, how come iran can't find any russians and chinese to pump its oil? As threatening as they may seem, have very incomplete economies and financial structures. The west is still the trader of choice: money, engineering expertise, banking system, supply chain, military for last resort protection. russia and china can't come close.

Just so. Real economic sanction would require a blockade of Iranian shipping, shutting down of pipelines, grounding of air traffic. If we do these things Russia and China would splutter but it would not draw them into armed conflict, imo.
