LONDON (AFP) - Government buildings are to be provided with defences to stop them being rammed by cars or trucks packed with explosives.
The Sun newspaper said the buildings were to be surrounded with security devices designed to look like street furniture, at a cost of 25 million pounds.
The new Home Office building in central London will be used as a guide, The Sun said Saturday.
The interior ministry has state-of-the-art black concrete bollards one metre apart encircling it with raised grass verges in large concrete "pools" outside the main entrance.
"The architects want the measures to look good like those at the Home Office," an unnamed government source told the tabloid.
"They will look like normal street furniture but they will provide the biggest defence against car bombs.
"They will not be as unsightly as those that are already positioned around the Houses of Parliament."
The London landmark, a tourist hotspot, is surrounded by concrete barricades.
FoRtress England becoming Butttress England.
Car bomb proofed? Another example of avoiding the bullseye. Make the buildings Muslim proof, then we can talk. This is just like the airlines, everything from shampoo bottles to shoes are deemed more of a risk than another death cult member named Mohammed.
England is car bomb proofing their gov. buildings and arresting known terrorists. What is America doing?
"buildings were to be surrounded with security devices designed to look like street furniture, at a cost of 25 million pounds"
Yeah, lets all live in bunkers... but for god's sake keep letting in the jihadis and don't ever profile!
What the heck is that?
"street furniture". Nevermind, N. I read further and know what that is, now.
street furniture, bollards???
Speak English, for cryin' out loud!
"England is car bomb proofing their gov. buildings and arresting known terrorists. What is America doing?"
We have Jack Bauer. We don't have to do anything more than him, m. (;^O)
What is America doing? Bowing to the liberal cabal yet again that wants those terrorists to attack again, solely so they have yet another reason again, to badmouth Bush again, like they did at the 911 hearings.
911 wasn`t important to them, what was more important was that they had a reason to bash Bush. I don`t know who wants another attack more; The Terrorists or Democrats. I would say the Democrats because you sure as hell don`t see Al-Qaeda trying as much as they do to see it happen. When`s the last time you heard from some guy named Mohammed calling for an end to the patriot act?
Rather than make the buildings car bomb proof, wouldn't it be ever so much simpler to make the U.K. muzzie proof? JMHO.
Yeah; what you said, Doc!
DOES SECURITY HAVE TO BE AS UGLY AS A JERSEY BARRIER? OR CAN IT BE BOTH EFFECTIVE AND ATTRACTIVE? PLANNERS IN THE NATION'S CAPITAL ARE PUTTING WELL-DESIGNED SECURITY TO THE TEST.
The Limeys must be getting some frightful intelligence from the moslem bastards they've arrested so far...
I attended a seminar on making buildings more bomb-resistant (they cannot be made bomb-proof). Standards are being finalized right now.
Most of it centered on making windows so they don't separate and spray shards of glass everywhere. A high percentage of deaths and injuries in bomb/building blasts are due to flying glass. The new glass (like car windshield glass, but with shock absorbing frames) will be very expensive.
The other big change was to make it so that taking out a SINGLE column will not cause the floors above it to fail. Just more beam strength.
The last thing was to outlaw any public parking underneath the building.
