Air Force Squadron's 'Crusader' Name and Emblem Challenged

ALBUQUERQUE (AP) - Mikey Weinstein, who sued the Air Force over allegations that Air Force Academy cadets were subjected to Christian evangelization, now wants New Mexico's Cannon Air Force Base to end the 523rd Fighter Squadron's use of "Crusaders" as the unit's nickname.

He also objects to the squadron's emblem, which features a cross, a sword and an armored helmet.

Weinstein, who's Jewish, says having warplanes named after medieval Christians who fought Muslims in the Holy Land is crazy when the United States is at war with radical Islam.

He believes the religious emblem also is unconstitutional. A Cannon Air Force Base spokesman says he knows of no plans to change the Crusaders nickname or the 523rd unit emblem.

I dunno. Seems to make a heck of a lot of sense to me!

Seems perfectly appropriate to me!

What is Weinstein's standing? Is he in the Air Force? If not, what's it to him?

It's off-season for Weinstein - too early in the year to be suing some town with 35 people for having a manger "downtown."

Weinstein mis-states the problem. The problem is that we are NOT at war with all of Islam. If we were, this wouldn't be an issue.

The US is a Christian nation, like it or not. This country welcomed Jews better than any other nation on earth except Israel, and this is the gratitude we get.

This is like inviting someone to your home for dinner as an equal, and then they complain about the Christmas tree in the living room and the pre-meal prayer.

This guy is just another part of the liberal plot to undo America. Sad to see so many Jews roped into such destructive behavior.

And guess what? Words like "Crusaders" do have secular meanings. I suspect you're just exhibiting you self-loathing tendencies.

Anyone know where he is stationed? I am surprised that he gets by with this BS as active AF.......

It is interesting that there is a cross on the patch. I wouldn't a thunk that religious emblems were too common on patches.

If we go to war with every last Muslim on the planet--all 1.2 billion of 'em--I won't have a particular problem with units bearing the name "Crusaders" and having a representation of a Crusader's shield on the insignia.

Until then, we might want to rethink unit IDs--there are a bunch of deactivated units that can have their colors resurrected that have equally fierce names and insignia, but don't give the Islamonazis a freebie, no-brainer propaganda point.

Two responses to this.
One, I don't accept that I need to allow the Muslim Mass Murderers to set the rules of the debate or define words for me.
Second, the Muslim Mass Murderers and their apologists consider everything of propaganda value whether real or invented.

Thus, I couldn't care less what the Muslim Mass Murderers think.
