Israeli panel: Giuliani is 'best' presidential candidate for Israel
Haaretz ^ | 9/05/2006 | Haaretz Staff

Former New York City mayor Rudy Giuliani is the "best" candidate in the 2008 race for Israel, a panel of eight Israeli experts assembled by Haaretz has determined.

Giuliani is followed by former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich, Arizona Senator John McCain and New York Senator Hillary Clinton. Ranking bottom of the list is Illinois Senator Barack Obama.

Actually Gore is the biggest surprise. He is cut and runner #1. Hillary has at least pretended to be semi-tough on terrorism, but I am sure she will join the cut and run crowd once the primaries get going.

The best candidate for Israel hands down is Sam Brownback.

Giuliani seems good and may stay good but he also can pull a "Nixon to China" or Sharon "withdrawal type move".

Some candidates are given marks way to high.

One thing to remember, and I am sure it affects the results to a degree, is that Jews tend to be very liberal.

This is from the Jewish News of Greater Phoenix:

Not only did Kerry receive a higher share of the Jewish vote than previously thought; over the last three presidential elections, Jews have consistently voted 28-30 points more Democratic than the country at large. This analysis also showed that a large majority of American Jews think of themselves as Democrats. Between 65 and 74 percent of Jews identify as Democrats, while estimates of the percentage of Jews who identify as Republicans range from 11-21 percent.

I see the WOT, Israel, and our border control as connected issues but the Israelis don't have any reason to concern themselves with our border control issue. In a way I think they should worry about our border as much as they worry about theirs.

This is not about an anti-Jewish sentiment. We don't pay attention when Europeans are polled on who they'd want as our President. In fact, we'd prefer them to mind their own affairs, whether they be allies or no. It's up to American citizens--and American citizens only--to decide what is best for America first. If our allies are helped in the process, good for them.

First of all this sounds like left wingers making the decision on who is good for Israel. These idiots might consider abortion in the US good for Israel. Second it is time for the Israelis to spend more time doing what is good for Israel and less time worrying whether the American President is a friend of Israel.

"Giuliani is good", you say. Good for whom

A clue should be the topic of this thread.

Here is discussed which candidate would be best for Israel from an Israeli prospective.

If you ever watched C-Span, you would frequently see a panel of Americans discussing the goings on in various Nations.

I do acknowledge that if someone is suffering from paranoia vis a vis Jews, the idea of an ISRAELI newspaper convening a panel of ISRAELIS, discussing American politics would get that paranoid person all hot and bothered. Even when the panel obviously is clueless.

I'm sure you will agree with me that the mistake here is that someone goofed and published the panel's findings in a newspaper when it was supposed to stay within the secret minutes of the last meeting of the Elders of Zion.

If you want a clue into your inner subconscious feelings about Jews/Israel think of your reaction to this piece.

How dare they discuss which candidate is best for Israel? Is that what you are thinking? Why?

Don't we discuss which candidate of a foreign country is best for the US? Did we discuss the last election in Italy? Who did we cheer for in Mexico? How did we feel about Spain whose election would reverse support for the US? On and on.

Get the picture?

So you consider a candidate for office in the United States to be "good" based on what he would do for a foreign country, not based on what he would do for the United States. If you were a citizen of that foreign country, that would be undestandable, though I would also invite you to refain from imitating the Communists in China or the Aztlanists in Mexico.

I think this one's a bit nicer.

Yes, someone did, and that's possible. BTW, even though I'm not Jewish, I can tell you that most Orthodox rabbis would not support Giuliani over a more morally conservative and pro-Israel prospect. That...from the comments of some of them.

Haaretz is often not supportive of Israel. "A panel of eight Israeli experts assembled by Haaretz" might prefer Vespasian for the presidency, if he were alive, available and good at propagandizing.

Brilliant observation.

Of course it doesn't explain that I, a Giuliani supporter, above wrote that another potential candidate would be more pro Israel.

It also doesn't take into account that not everyone is pro-Israel, (I know, hard to believe especially for you,) and the article also tells one who to vote for if you are looking for someone less friendly to Israel.

But you figured out that this was posted to push Giuliani- because articles from Haaretz, and Israel, are very rare on FR- and I'm sure the numerous Steve Irwin stories are posted to promote Australian adventure tourism.

So just to be sure we understand your problems they are, one, that Israelis are discussing how US politics may affect them, and two, that the fact of such is brought to the attention of Freepers who may be interested. Not you of course who was forced to read this thread.

It's a conspiracy. No question.

More like the Village Voice- strike that- Pravda, if Pravda was an American published paper during the Cold War.

Haaretz is hardly influential in Israel compared to other papers but it is very Leftist, has an English version, and therefore gives the foreign, English speaking, Leftist journalists based in Israel, a view that they like and can adopt.

I don't know enough about Opus Dei or how Brownback might be influenced by it, if his views have changed.

I read an intimate interview regarding Israel he did years ago- before his conversion- and my feeling was that his strong Christian Zionist beliefs would be the most pro-Israel.

In any event he can't win. He's not a player for the top spot.

The panel is very much clueless. Hagel should be in negative numbers. Allen should be much higher then Frist. Rice? Dodd? Others?

I've no idea what standards they used, apparently they polled a panel of academics and ex-diplomats. Then somehow they add a weighting to the results. Don't try to make sense of the numbers.

I would have written it all off to Ha'aertz and their liberal cronies, but reading the thread I realize it's the work of the Elders, so I suppose I should pay attention as they update the poll weekly. Rudy is the choice of the Elders you know. I've read here that he'll start any war his handlers order him to.

==============

Survey Results: Week ending 09/09/06

The panel was asked to score the candidates on the following issues, on a scale of one to 10, with one being "worst" for Israel and 10 being "best" for Israel. The first four questions deal with ongoing events and so will change each month; the fifth is a general question that will be asked each time:

1. How much of an effort will the candidate make to resolve the Israeli-Palestinian conflict?

2. To what extent does the candidate view Israel as a strategic asset?

3. How much of an emotional connection does the candidate have to Israel?

4. How willing would the candidate be to use military force to prevent Iran from getting nuclear weapons?

5. How "good for Israel" is the candidate?

The results:

* The "weighted average" is the figure our pollster Camil Fuchs gave to each candidate after taking into consideration the voting habits of each panel member and adjusting the results accordingly.

Most of those rating numbers seem absurd.

How do they rate, know even, someone's emotinial tie. I don't know that Giuliani or Gingrich have such an emotional tie as compared to a practical one towards Israel.

And you're right that what Haaretz believes is good for Israel isn't nessesarily so.

I want to vote for the candidate who would get a zero for an active part in the "peace process". The "peace process", as understood by Haaretz, is never pro Israel.
