SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger said on Tuesday he would veto a bill that would create a government-run health care system for the most populous U.S. state.
The widely expected veto, as Schwarzenegger seeks re-election in November, marks one of the Republican governor's sharpest breaks with the state's Democratic-led legislature this year.
Schwarzenegger commended the Democratic lawmaker who advanced the health-care bill, but said California could not afford a state-run health system.
An immigrant from Austria, Schwarzenegger had previously signaled his opposition to the bill because he believes state-run health systems in Europe work against consumers.
The bill by state Sen. Sheila Kuehl would create a state-managed health insurance program open to all Californians and bar private health insurance plans from selling services offered by the new program.
"Socialized medicine is not the solution to our state's health care problems," Schwarzenegger said in a statement.

People who say there is no difference between Arnold and Angelides are delusional.
Angelides would have signed this bill.
Angelides would have signed this bill.

Without any doubt. And that type of thinking, (to hell with the will of the people of California), is what the radical left is all about in California. Big government power, at any price to the state's economy, to private enterprise, and to the RIGHTS OF CALIFORNIA CITIZENS and taxpayers.
These communists just don't care -- about anything BUT POWER AND CONTROL, at any price.
Actually, I don't think this bill would have even been introduced if a Democrat were in office. This bill was put forward by Zelda just to force Arnold to veto it. The Dems will then point to this and claim that Republicans are against health care.
This is how contemptible the Democrats have become that they would purposefully put something like this POS bill forward with such an ulterior motive in mind.
Angelides is on record saying he did not support the Kuehl bill.
CA: Governor and rival both oppose bill for universal health care (Kuehl bill)

Arnold is just as contemptible, for he certainly agreed to the gambit in order to throw a meaningless bone to his base and everybody is happy.
What a farce. See tagline.
If all the conservatives in SC gathered in one spot, no one would notice.
;)
We get to see where the left is going every day.
"Angelides is on record saying he did not support the Kuehl bill. "
LOL - and he wouldn't lie to us, now would he ?
You know as well as eveyone does that saying he didn't support it does NOT mean he would have vetoed it.
"Arnold is just as contemptible, for he certainly agreed to the gambit in order to throw a meaningless bone to his base and everybody is happy."
LOL - So the Dems and Arnold are now in cahoots to keep Angeledies from being elected. What a hoot !
"This is how contemptible the Democrats have become that they would purposefully put something like this POS bill forward with such an ulterior motive in mind."
Change Democrats to Marxists. There no longer are Democrats.
THat is what the author of that article said.
Here is excerpts of what Angelides actually said. It's clear that Angelides just doesn't want to come out for the bill, because his focus group told him it's a bad idea, just the same way it took him months to declare support for Jessica's law:
CA: Angelides Mum on Health Care Bill (universal healthcare -- SB840)
http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/1695077/posts
"Although Phil Angelides already is gearing up to slam Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger for his expected veto of state Sen. Sheila Kuehl's universal health care bill, SB 840, the Democratic hopeful has no intention of telling anyone what he would do if he actually was governor, instead of just a candidate for the job. When asked Sunday if he would sign the bill that's now on the governor's desk, Angelides refused, often and at great length, to say.
"It's a moot issue because (Schwarzenegger) is not going to sign it," the treasurer said. "It's a moot issue because it's on his desk and he's failed to do anything on health care."
Angelides then launched into a impassioned description of his own plan, which includes expanding health care to all children, cutting the profit margin for HMOs, requiring large companies to provide insurance for employees and then bringing "business leaders, consumers and health experts together to move California toward universal health care."
But what about Kuehl's bill, which would eliminate private health insurance in the state. Not only would it provide the universal health care Angelides wants to work toward, but it's already been passed by the Democrat-controlled Legislature.
"This bill, which is going to be vetoed in a nanosecond by this governor, is just a reflection of his failure, so it's a moot issue," he said.
But if Phil Angelides was governor of California, would he sign this bill?
"I'm going to say one more time, it's a moot issue," he answered. "It's a bill on (Schwarzenegger's) desk. It's a signal when he vetoes it of his failure to do anything on the issue of health care."
Actually, I don't think this bill would have even been introduced if a Democrat were in office.

While I agree with your reasoning about their socialists politics, I still think they would have done something like this because they are socialists and are willing to do anything, at any cost to the state, for their empowerment and bigger liberal socialist government...
Not all of them, but from what I can tell, as far as Nunez, Perata, Villaraigosa etc are concerned, they've decided they'd rather have the Grovelnator than their own candidate.
Here's how I think things look from their perspective: The California Democrats have only just recovered from Bray Davis. They know the mediots have managed to make a girly man out of Arnold. They know he can deliver 80% of what they want because he can chill the Republican opposition. Besides, the people behind Arnold are the same people they need to please for campaign money. They also know the State is going bust. So when things crash, they'll make sure Arnold gets the blame and the Republican Party with him.
OTOH if Angelides is elected and tries to raise taxes etc, they don't get as much of what they want against unified Republican opposition. They know Angelides is enough of a stupid idealogue as to proudly reveal the real socialist agenda of the DNC in such a was as to scare everybody. The people freak, the State crashes and burns anyway, and the blame goes to a Democrat with enough charm to make Gray Davis look Mr. Congeniality. They'd be history and they know it.
So, what's to lose for the Democrats backing Arnold?
Go ahead and celebrate, but I think you're being rather shortsighted for not seeing this. As far as I am concerned, this spate of events is merely proof of the disaster that lies in store should Arnold be re-elected.
Of course, nowhere in what you posted does Angelides say he "will" sign it, as was contended.
He probably just backed off of his opposition statement because he took too much heat from the commies in his party.
Amazing how much like a Democrat you think ...
Let the State crash, blame the other guys and the people will love you when you try to pick up the pieces.
Somehow that just dosen't have the ring of conservative thinking to me ...
Well it's not amazing that you can't construct a cogent argument; it's typical.
Let the State crash, blame the other guys and the people will love you when you try to pick up the pieces.
So instead of a cogent argument, you make up what you wish I had said out of whole cloth. It's a crock. I've done everything in my power to preclude the massive debt Arnold has incurred. Given the direction you 'droids have taken, being too cowardly to allow a contested primary, there's nothing I can do about it now except tell you it's going to happen.
Somehow that just dosen't have the ring of conservative thinking to me ...
Given that you aren't one, how would you know?
"I've done everything in my power to preclude the massive debt Arnold has incurred."
I will agree that you have done everything in your power to attack Arnold, and I don't believe I've seen a single line of support on anything he's done that upset the Democrats.
In fact, you've constructed a way to attack him here when he did as a Republican should do and vetoed this bill.
Nonsense. I praised his hiring of Donna Arduin. I praised his appointment of Tom Campbell to Finance Director. I praised his appointment of Andrea Hoch to the state Division of Workers Compensation. I praised his endorsement of Prop. 73, even though he abandoned it later. And the biggie He signed a ban on subsidized Viagra for sex offenders!!! Now thats moral courage.
So go ahead and say what you like, when you stop with the dishonest character assassination and start posting facts and logic, I'll stop ignoring you.
Poor Karaoke, his character always being assassinated? You won't stop ignoring anyone, as long as you can cause disruption. Btw, I noticed a few of your 'praises' to Arnie and backhanded they were!
Oh sedulous liar, is this what you call backhanded praise? Even FareOpinion acknowledged it.
There are others. They may be rare, but when Arnold does something unambiguously good, I say so.
LOL, even in that post, as you yourself acknowledged. You one funny demonrat.
http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/1270786/posts?page=19#19
Sure, I acknowledged "your praise" of Arnold.
Out of 5000 of your posts bashing Arnold mercilessly, you post one post that actually acknowledges he did something right -- that was the whole point of my post.
Out of 5000 of posts demonstrating Arnold's perfidity, he actually did something right -- that was the whole point of my post.
You think one out of 5000 is good enough. I don't.
Tough luck, liar.
What would you know of conservative thinking? People in glass houses...
Don't worry about it sweetie, Arnoiled is entirely too easy to damn with faint praise!!! Ha Ha Ha!!! He's going to be such a worthless little girleyman for the next wasted 48 long months!!! This state is really going to suffer severely...
FO never said that. You used deceit again. And you refer to me as 'liar', LOL ...
I didn't say she said that.
You used deceit again. And you refer to me as 'liar', LOL ...
By the same standard, you so prove yourself again.
Karaoke, when you get past the rubber/glue response you'll let me know, okay?
"I praised his hiring of Donna Arduin"
"On the plus side he appointed a talented auditor, Donna Arduin, to be Finance Director, but then didn't listen to her."
Praise ? You mentioned it only as a means to attack him.
"I praised his appointment of Tom Campbell to Finance Director."
"He appointed Tom Campbell to be Finance Director. We'll see if Arnold listens to him."
Praise ? You mentioned it only as a means to potentialy attack him.
"I praised his appointment of Andrea Hoch to the state Division of Workers Compensation."
"He appointed Andrea Hoch to the state Division of Workers Compensation."
Praise ? You made a non-commital statement of fact
... and all of these so-called "Praises" mentioned ONLY within a list of attacks, in what appears to be a weak attempt to appear balanced ...
Your continued commitment to the tearing down of the Republican candidate consequently leading to a Democrat victory is quite obvious.
But actually my favorite "praise" is this one ... when He killed the Consumer Power and Conservation Financing Authority.
The "praise" of this action was -
"Still, it goes onto my list.

Followed closely by -
"Did Arnold actually DO something here or did this sunset without legislative reauthorization?
It would be really telling if conservatives were offering him praises for NOT doing something.

Was your first comment ("Still, it goes onto my list.") too overflowing? to gushy ? that you had to come back and warn your cohorts -
... Be careful, we don't want to wind up actually saying something nice about a Republican Governor if we can possibly find some contorted way to avoid it.
