WASHINGTON (AFP) - Former soldiers and parents of Americans fighting in Iraq opened anti-war, anti-Bush "Camp Democracy" in the heart of Washington, a demonstration planned to last several weeks.

After spending early August near President George W. Bush's ranch in Crawford, Texas, and the end of the month at his family retreat in Kennebunkport, Maine, the protesters set up camp in the US capital between the Congress building and the White House.

Started by anti-war activist Cindy Sheehan, "Camp Democracy" will welcome pacifists, Democratic lawmakers, union leaders, environmentalists, feminists and those fighting for immigrants' rights.

Five tents will be open until at least September 21 for panels, protests and press conferences.

"We're told all the time we're out there fighting for democracy. No one knows more than we do that this war has nothing to do with democracy," Michael McPhearson, a member of Veterans for Peace, told reporters. McPhearson fought in Iraq in 1991 and has a son who has just returned from there.

"This administration does not want to have a discussion, especially with those of use who have lived the nightmare of what this war is really about," said Charlie Anderson, who fought in Iraq in 2003.

Funny how you have to dig into the article to find Mother Sheehan's name, when this is her project. If this were something started by Karl Rove it'd be in the headline. Doesn't say much for her rep.

"non-partisan camp for peace, democracy, and the restoration of the rule of law."

Commie-speak is fun!

Look how easy it is to be a Leftist. You simply say what ever you want. That your slogans and screeching have not even the hint of a clue of an illusion of a hope of a glimps of anything remotely resembling fact or reality doesn't matter. Reality is simply whatever the Leftist FEELS it should be!

Reality is simply whatever the Leftist FEELS it should be!

Precisely. It's not about what IS--or even what one thinks it is--but what one's emotions tell you it SHOULD be. That's what PC language is all about--we know what you MEAN when you say that, so change the words, and even if you really do think that, it FEELS better when you say something we cleaned up.

Liberals are these crazy Frankenstein creations--"Oh, DAMN, I put the heart where the BRAIN should be!"

I wonder if any of these bozos are really "ex-soldiers." I know I've seen many of their faces in news photos of "gay" pep rallies.

"Camp Democracy" will welcome pacifists, Democratic lawmakers, union leaders, environmentalists, feminists and those fighting for immigrants' rights.

Why are they throwing together such a disassociated bunch in a peace-nik gathering? Why aren't the anti-semites Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton on the list of invitees?

Our latest Kerry wannabes?

I'd say those that are currently there and continue VOLUNTEERING to return just may knows more than he does that this war has everything to do with democracy.

Always sad to see fomer Military drink the kool-aid and garner all the attention that should be going to our brave troops still VOLUNTEERING for harm's way.

From an ACLU FOIA application to the FBI for anya nd all information they may have on individuals, he is listed as, "Michael McPhearson is the Executive Director of Veterans for Peace, a national organization which, among other things, engages in public dissent against the Bush Administration's policy concerning the War in Iraq. McPhearson, a Gulf War Veteran, has received national attention for his advocacy against the War since 9/11. In 2003 and 2004 he traveled to Iraq, Italy and Turkey as part of a peace delegation to monitor the occupation and present the organization's message opposing U.S. occupation. He has also been detained at the airport. McPhearson, a coordinating committee member of the “Bring them Home Now” campaign against U.S. occupation, and a steering committee member of United for Peace and Justice, was a featured speaker at a national march in Washington, D.C. sponsored by United for Peace and Justice and he has also been featured on C-Span and in Associated Press articles condemning the Bush Administration's policies. A long time activist, McPhearson, who is the publisher of Cpeace.com, previously engaged in outspoken activism with the NAACP.

Michael McPhearson

I'd love to see his discharge papers.

What a joke.

"non-partisan camp for peace, democracy, and the restoration of the rule of law."

Non-Partisan? How many are Republican, you think?

Restoration of the "Rule of Law?"

Like honoring your enlistment contract when you VOLUNTEER?

Sites list him as an Army Artillery Officer at Ft. Bragg, 5 years active, 6 inactive and was discharged as a Captain. 11 Years and he only made Captain? The sites also do not mention any conditions of his discharge either.

I wonder if he realizes his own son, now in Iraq, is a VOLUNTEER?
