When did the "Country Club wing of the party" abandon Dan Quayle?

Do you remember when Quayle was left hung out to dry by the Republicans when he made his Murphey Brown speech. Only a handful a Republicans rose to support him, to say he was right. For the rest, it was too politically incorrect for them to stick their necks out.

It took Bill Clinton addressing the issue years later to say that Dan Quayle was right.

The primary is over....It is not time to work to get her elected....I hope that Tenn holds on to the Senate seat....What I feel has been a problem is now over and we should all work to hold on to not only that seat but pick one up here...

I don't remember it, but I've read about it. I think there's a difference between refusing to "stick your neck out" for a Republican you may disagree with (how many here would do it for McCain?) and abandoning that person at the polls. I wouldn't fault "Country Club Republicans" for refusing to actively defend Quayle after that, but I would be more likely to fault them if they refused to vote for his ticket in 1992 because of it.

Well of course you wouldn't, you are a country club Republican. I would fault them. I am a conservative. If a friend of mine takes a position that is correct, I will stand with him, be counted and support him.

As I said, the country club Republicans are a the reason I likely will change my party registration. Here in our town we have had our fill of Republicans that are the worst of every possible steriotype a democrat could put up about Republicans.

It has left a bad taste in my mounth, the same as was left when Dan Quayle rose to state the obvious (even though at the time it was politically incorrect) and most of the Republicans cowered in the shadows.
