Where are secret jails, the EU demands
By Alec Russell in Washington
(Filed: 08/09/2006)
European politicians yesterday called on Washington to reveal the sites of the CIA's secret prisons after President George W Bush's admission that terrorist prisoners had been held in clandestine foreign jails.
As Mr Bush hit the road to sell Wednesday's revelation of the "black sites" to the American public as a victory for his anti-terrorist policies, European politicians stepped up the pressure for further details.
"The location of these prison camps must be made public," said Wolfgang Kreissl-Dörfler, a member of the European Parliament's committee investigating the CIA's alleged use of sites in Eastern Europe. "We need to know if there has been any complicity in illegal acts by governments of EU countries or of states seeking EU membership."
Allegations that the CIA held and tortured terrorist suspects in secret Eastern European prisons provoked fury in Europe last year and intensified already virulent anti-Americanism.
But in America the debate has been more muted and yesterday, far from being cowed or contrite as many European politicians expected, Mr Bush sought to capitalise on the impact of his statement.
In a speech in Atlanta, the latest in a series building up to Monday's anniversary of the 9/11 attacks, he argued that he had made America safer than it was five years ago. And in an address on Wednesday he said 14 top al-Qa'eda figures had been transferred from the secret prisons to Guantanamo Bay awaiting trial.
Mr Bush is hoping to secure the future of the Guantanamo Bay detention centre by getting Congress to approve a law authorising the tribunals.

The "EU" didn't request this information. A few "EU politicians" asked for the information.
Do we even recognize the EU as a legitimate governing body? Are they even a legitimate governoring body given they can't get anybody to ratify their union?

There seems to be a lot of things European politicians don't expect. Like religeously motivated murder and mayhem. They just gotta quit projecting their own weakness.

Who care what the EU wants to know about the "secret" prisons? They had a heck of a lot of them some 60 years ago, and thought it quite fine. To heck with them, they are nothing but a bunch of weak kneed yes people who will shortly be ruled by the mulsims (islam, turning their butts to the west) just like the knuckled under to Hitler. Ne knew the tenacity and weak backbone of Europeans. That's one of the reasons we were in Europe all those year ago, so save their sorry butts from communism, and the bolsheviks. These are my thoughts, and I lived there for a long time.

I have to say that
if they were in European countries (or any other country for that matter) and the governments of said countries were not aware of them, then they do have the right to be upset. If, however, say an intelligence agency of said country knew but the PM, president, whatever, didn't, too bad...plausible deniability and all that is good, sometimes.
My guess is that wherever they were, the governments knew all about them...though frankly I probably think that they were either on ships (which is where I would've put them...international waters, none of this nonsense to deal with) or some small island, as someone else suggested.

They are not prisons (and with the quantity of holdees, certainly not camps). They're spas and salons.
If you want to know where the spas are, you have to ask nice.

the sooner they recognize that this war is their business.... and future too, the sooner we will be on the path to success.
this war is targeting members of the G8: those who have generated demonstrated economic and political progress. there is jealousy, envy, failure and frustration at play as the islamic way has not been able to generate nor deliver progress.
sure the EU can lay down to the demands generated by the islamic nation but if they continue schmoozed to sleep, the last few awake will have their throats cut.
its high time they recognize that its their war too
